...Sport utility vehicles have come a long way since the clunky box that had little control on the highway. SUV’s used to be built on truck platforms, which gave them a heavier feel and bulkier ride. Now built on a car platform (http://www.edmunds.com/suv/before-buy.html), these crossover vehicles can be competitively compared to a standard sedan. The Chevy Equinox is a car-based SUV that has the same attributes as the mid-size passenger car, the Chevrolet Malibu, such as easier handling and a quieter, more enjoyable ride. The Malibu has been redesigned to be as comfortable as a luxury vehicle with a better performance than other vehicles in its class. The Chevrolet Equinox might boast a roomier interior like most crossovers, but the Chevrolet Malibu is a better value, not only because of price but also gas mileage, safety and interior space. While the price of an SUV used to be significantly higher than a mid-size sedan, with the invention of the smaller, car-based models, prices are now comparable. The Malibu starts at $21,995 and goes up to $29,700. (http://autos.aol.com/cars-Chevrolet-Malibu-2013/safety-features/) The Equinox starts at $24,155 and, depending on the features, can max out at $32,665. (http://usnews.rankingsandreviews.com/cars-trucks/Chevrolet_Equinox/) Projected resale value for a standard model Malibu priced at $23,150 after one year is 68% or $15,742. After five years, it drops to 36% or $8,334. (http://www.kbb.com/chevrolet/malibu/2013-chevrolet-malibu/ls/...

...a degree!” I can still here those words in my head today. When I decided to go to college I was Proud. It was easy task for me because I was really determined to be successful I life. I also sort of didn’t really have a choice because my parents both went to college and got degrees so it was basically a MUST. What drove me to college was the determination of me wanting a better education, not only for myself but for my loved ones in the future. I basically was so determined to better my future for myself. But I can also say I was also pushed. In my family there were two options, you either went to college or you were a struggling minimum wage adult. But in my mother’s household it was all about college. My mom stressed everyday how college was so important. She would talk on and on and on, as if she was a broken record player. My mom was one of the factors I decided to further my education. She showed me how as if my life would be without a college degree. In this world you need some type of degree if you want to become more than just the sales associate. You need that degree t become the manager and not just the floor manager, but the general manager. And that’s what my mom stressed and showed us on the daily. She basically showed me the right path to take. Now at first it was all about whatever decisions you decide to take don’t complain about the hardships. When she said those exact words to I was like see now I don’t even want to go because who wants to go through failure...

...to manage and maintain small tools owned by the company throughout the factory. This would obviously test our skills as team players and was obviously a massive challenge as the issues with tools not being managed correctly had been an ongoing problem within the company for a number of years. We quickly made an office known as the operations room our base and our first instinct was to have a brainstorming session together to gather thoughts on the task ahead so we all had an understanding of what lay ahead for us. The purpose, aims and objectives of the activity would need to be defined appropriately with the use of SMART objectives with the view that our goals and targets should be specific, measurable, achievable, realistic and timely. The main objectives of the project were as follows: * Identify the tools required for every Wrightbus job. * Identify the current inventory of tools being used on the shop floor. * Carry out a gap analysis between what is required and what is currently being used. * Assess the financial impact by investigating the positives and negatives on filling the gap. * Create small tools re-ordering system based on predictive needs so tools are replenished when necessary. The purpose of the activity was to provide structure with a system that would be easily recognisable by the...

...many islands which of course is what Polynesia means they have never been hesitant to prepare for a Voyage and take off. Now they do of course expect to get something better when they arrive. (Sir Tom Davis 2004, as quoted in Children of the Migration) During the 1960/1970’s New Zealand saw a large increase in the migration of Samoans into New Zealand. This was caused by a need for ‘extra labourers’, as the New Zealand Government had an influx of jobs with no one to give them to. Samoans were offered the chance to come to New Zealand, the land of ‘milk and honey’ to received greater ‘opportunities’. They came in vision of receiving better education for their children, higher pay and also less labour intensive jobs. This all seemed exciting and full of adventure and opportunity for the Samoan people encouraging them to pack up their belongings and migrate south to Aotearoa (New Zealand). New Zealand in the 1950’s was a very wealthy nation, this was because we came out of the World Wars relatively unscathed. This giving us opportunity to provide necessities such as wool, dairy products and meat to much of the recovering western world. With all this opportunity New Zealand had to find labour fast. ‘’Although Samoans had travelled to New Zealand since the early 1900s, it was not until the 1960s that they migrated in large numbers’’ (Anae 2011, as quoted in Te Ara). As New Zealand’s industry grew so did the need for labourers. This is what drove the New Zealand government...

...On September 11, 2001, at 8:45 a.m. on a clear Tuesday morning, an American Airlines Boeing 767 loaded with 20,000 gallons of jet fuel crashed into the north tower of the World Trade Centre in New York City. The impact left a gaping, burning hole near the 80th floor of the 110-story skyscraper, instantly killing hundreds of people and trapping hundreds more in higher floors. As the evacuation of the tower and its twin got underway, television cameras broadcasted live images of what initially appeared to be a freak accident. Then, 18 minutes after the first plane hit, a second Boeing 767–United Airlines Flight 175–appeared out of the sky, turned sharply toward the World Trade Centre and sliced into the south tower near the 60th floor. The collision caused a massive explosion that showered burning debris over surrounding buildings and the streets below. America was under attack. The attackers were Islamic terrorists from Saudi Arabia and several other Arab nations. Reportedly financed by Saudi fugitive Osama Bin Ladens al-Qaeda terrorist organization, they were allegedly acting in retaliation for America's support of Israel, its involvement in the Persian Gulf War and its continued military presence in the Middle East. Some of the terrorists had lived in the United States for more than a year and had taken flying lessons at American commercial flight schools. Others had slipped into the country in the months before September 11 and acted as the "muscle" in the operation. The 19...

...BLOCK A A: Tony Fernandes, welcome to Talk Asia. T: Thanks for having me. A: We talk about you, a lot of people talk about you and describe you as the Richard Branson of Asia. Do you like that comparison? T: Well, I mean Richard Branson has done a lot of great things, so it's a bad comparison, but we're very, very different people, from a business philosophy. We're also very similar in some areas, but we are different business-wise. But there could be worse people that we're compared to. A: Mr. Branson, Richard Branson, has actually just bought into your long haul operation, which is gonna be starting shortly, taking 20 percent for not a huge amount -- under 10 million, we believe. What are you gonna get out of that? How do you get the Branson name or magic involved in that? T: Well, I think what a lot of people have missed out, is we started this idea about two years ago. I mean we're obviously friends, we've known each other for a long time, I worked for him initially, 20 odd years ago. So we talked about doing something together. We talked about Virgin Blue first, but that didn't work out 'cause he had a funny kind of partner back then. Through a conversation we said, hey, why don't we try this out. And, so he's really a founder as much as I am, and I think if this model works, there's no reason why it can't go into the UK and other parts where Virgin are in. A: This is a big if, because the long-haul model, the short-haul works obviously, your short-haul model works. And...

...What is Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR)? Though there is no universal definition of corporate social responsibility, it generally refers to transparent business practices that are based on ethical values, compliance with legal requirements, and respect for people, communities, and the environment. Thus, beyond making profits, companies are responsible for the totality of their impact on people and the planet. “People” constitute the company’s stakeholders: its employees, customers, business partners, investors, suppliers and vendors, the government, and the community. Increasingly, stakeholders expect that companies should be more environmentally and socially responsible in conducting their business. In the business community, CSR is alternatively referred to as “corporate citizenship,” which essentially means that a company should be a “good neighbor” within its host community. ...Remember the Ford Pinto‚ the egg-shaped economy ride that sometimes exploded when struck from behind? Mark Robinson Does. He also remembers the look on the faces of the jurors who awarded $127 million to his client 13-year-old burn victim Richard Grimshaw‚ in 1978‚ based on a design flaw that led to the deaths of 27 people from fuel-tank fires in Pintos. The jurors were outraged to learn that the Ford Motor Co. became aware of the risks of passenger deaths in 1971 yet waited until 1976 to move the Pinto’s gas tank from behind the rear axle to a safer spot above the center of the axle. "Ford made a decision to place-money ahead of human lives‚" Robinson says‚ waving an Aug. 26‚ 1971‚ fuel system integrity memorandum. That damning piece of evidence advised Ford executives not to recall or re-design the Pinto "until required by law." Thirty years later‚ Robinson charges‚ little has changed. The automobile industry continues to place profits ahead of people‚ he says. In recent years‚ they’ve added a new weapon to their arsenal‚ according to the plaintiffs’ bar: protective orders granted by courts and genuflecting judges that keep corporate transgressions out of the public eye. Recently‚ aided by lawmakers‚ consumer groups and the media‚ plaintiffs’ lawyers have begun firing back‚ asking courts to let the sunshine in to cleanse dirty little secrets like those behind the Ford Pinto. The Colonel’s Secret Recipe and the formula for Coca Cola—the trade secrets on which corporate...

...Analysing the Impact of Enterprise Resource Planning Systems Roll-outs in Multi-National Companies Fergal Carton and Frederic Adam University College Cork, Ireland f.carton@ucc.ie fadam@afis.ucc.ie Abstract: Large organisations, in particular multi-national corporations, have been at the forefront of the ERP movement since its origins. They have used these highly integrated systems as a way to achieve greater levels of standardisation of business processes across sites and greater centralisation of IT resources. The most common scenario for an ERP implementation in a large multi-national firm is the phased roll-out, whereby the modules of the application are implemented in all the sites in a series of waves. A standard implementation, as designed by Headquarters, is replicated in each site. This standard implementation uses a base configuration, sometimes referred to as a template or blueprint, which cannot be deviated from in any of the sites. These monolithic implementations can be quite traumatic for individual sites where local practices, sometimes quite well established and rich in organizational learning, must be abandoned. This may lead to large scale organisational problems, which must be ironed out if the full potential of the enterprise-wide system is to be obtained. In an attempt to tease out the issues in the global implementation of ERP systems, we carried out a number of case studies at Irish manufacturing sites of multinational firms where management sought ways...

...Michael Fisher Michael Fisher The Blood Letter The Blood Letter The Blood Letter Written by: Michael Fisher Jr. Copyright: October 23, 2014 -Preface- In mid-evil times there was an unorthodox treatment for any ailment at the time, it was called bloodletting. When the nobles were ill, no matter what the affliction was, the surgeons with their hideous beak nosed masks and the blacked out eyes would come in and perform a bloodletting. The bloodletting consisted of placing leaches randomly on the afflicted one’s body, and allowing them to suck the sickness out of the host body. They would also place small incisions in precise placements to allow the “bad blood” to flow out of the infected body. More times than not, the patient died, but they always assumed it was because the infection was too far gone. Or even that the Devil himself had a hunger for that person’s soul. Even during the time of the black plague outbreaks, smallpox, cholera and the many other ramped diseases of the dark ages, the bloodletting practice was incorporated. Even during the Salem witch trials this method was instilled as a form of torture to get confessions of witchcraft form the accused, and also to try to rid them of the evil blood received from the devil. The practice was thought to have died out with the knights, nobles, and the kingdoms of old, and destroyed along with the witches…or so we thought. Fast forward many centuries from the dark ages to the modern days of the cell phone...

Mauro loves his pink lion. One Saturday afternoon last spring, he and his wife, Elisa, front-runners for the title of Minnesota's most glamorous Italian transplants, stumbled onto an eclectic sale in a parking lot on the outskirts of St. Paul. As soon as he saw the white stone statue of a regal lion, Mauro didn't hesitate forking over a few hundred bucks. He knew exactly what he wanted to do with it. "I painted it fluo [as in fluorescent] pink myself," he says. And he put it in his front yard for all to see. Mauro Porcini is the resident design guru at 3M, the materials-science conglomerate based in St. Paul. Throughout the company, he's simply known as Mauro--a renaissance man who's transcended his last name. Although most of his Midwestern colleagues pronounce it MORE-oh, it actually rhymes with WOW-whoa, which is also the typical reaction to the flamingo-colored sculpture that now resides across the street from the Oak Ridge Country Club. The club had been lion-free for 90 years until Mauro moved from Milan in 2010 to Hopkins, a Minneapolis suburb dotted with low-pitch ranch homes like his. "The neighbors...
