I have a strong belief in giving back to the community and gaining knowledge outside of school. One way of giving back and gaining outside of school knowledge is through volunteering and extracurricular activities. One of the extracurricular activities I will never forget is playing Varsity Soccer my senior year of high school. I will never forget this extracurricular activity because earning a spot on the team was one of the most dedicated experiences I have ever been through. The coaches pushed the rest of the players and I to our limits and beyond. I did not get to play for my high school the previous year due to an injury, therefore, senior year I had to push myself even more to prove my ability and will. In the end, it all paid off because

Bringing Ingenuity Back

...Nicholas Jerrel Jan-25-2014 “Bringing Ingenuity Back” by Linda Fine In “Bringing Ingenuity Back,” Linda Fine explains her educational interview on Civil War era printing presses, with an employee of the library, Sara Tilley. Fine describes meeting Tilley, and her passion for the art of print pressing. Tilley, an employee of the local college library, talks about the hours and, in some cases days of preparation that go into the process. The process involves preparing the paper, aligning the letters and setting up the equipment even before the printing begins. During Fines interview she talks about the art of the overall process by saying its “Craftsmanship adds value and meaning …” (46). Describing to her audience that Fine believes in taking pride in your work. Fine learns about the skills necessary to operate these antique print presses. (44-47). One way the author, Linda Fine, gives the reader a good mental picture of what she is experiencing is by describing the equipment used and how it works. Tilley explains that alignment of letters can be a conflict. Also, Tilley says “… humid weather can cause the ink to spread out, leaving text appearing smudgy and smeared” (45). Fine expresses her understanding for the great skill by comparing it to her sister’s experience. She related to it by saying “The scarf knitted for her friend had more meaning in it than a typical scarf purchased” (47). I believe this is a significant quote to the story, because it tells...

Taylor Branch's Exploitation In College Sports

...What gives colleges the right to use their athletes for their own profit? This has been a question that has been brought up for nearly a century. Taylor Branch in “The Shame of College Sports” and Derek Van Rheenen in “Exploitation in College Sports […]” both do a great job on describing the hardships that every college athlete goes though on a daily basis with the dictatorship of the National Collegiate Athletic Association. The NCAA dehumanizes and only seeks to make profit off of the men and women competing in intercollegiate sports. Walter Camp invented the great game of football in 1869 causing a revolution in collegiate sports. No one has ever seen a sport so brutal and memorizing since rugby. Therefore, making the game of football very...

College Education

...College Education Essay I always said that I would never go back to school. But now with raising a family of four and the cost of doing so and being told that I am in a position at work that has met maximum raise potential, I have decided to take the steps in completing a degree of higher education. I would love the opportunity for career growth, be the first to graduate from college in my immediate family and set an example to my children that completing college is an obtainable goal that can be reached at any age. When I was up for a review at my current job, I was told that they had to cap my salary of my current position. There was also no position I qualified for that I could transfer to have an opportunity to grow with my employer. I was devastated. The management positions at my company were reserved for those who had an advanced degree and no matter how great of an employee I am, the lack of a college degree was truly holding me back. I did not want to continually make the same salary for the rest of my life. I knew that I was worth more to my employer, but needed a degree to achieve this. This was a vital key to making a decision to go back to school. I worried as well on the cost and knew that I could not afford to pay for school myself. But through my research regarding loans and scholarships, I felt comfortable with financing my way back to school. There are numerous benefits an advanced degree can bring to my professional and personal life. Giving my...

Personal Finance for Seniors

...work for you.” -M.K Soni. How does this pertain to seniors in high school and their financial futures? Can saving up now truly benefit you later on? Does saving up a great deal of your money save you later on down the road? What is saving, budgeting, and planning on your financial stability for your future? These are all questions I asked myself that I knew I would use in this essay. Through a set of thorough research, dedication, and thought I came up with one answer that is easy. Saving now will benefit all people, especially seniors in high school. It will help them have no worries on a variety of things, and you won’t have a hassle or worry financially. In this essay I will be giving examples, facts, and prove to you how I am right. Why start saving now, isn’t that what a job is for; providing money for my everyday life? Saving is a systematic plan for the expenditure of a usually fixed resource, such as money or time, during a given period. Imagine if you lost your job, and couldn’t pay your car payment, and/or had no money to buy your everyday needs. You start using a credit card, and end up spending so much that you cannot pay it back on time. What happens to that bill? It builds up interest, and creates an even bigger problem to begin with. Interest is a charge for a loan, usually a percentage of the amount loaned; an excess or bonus beyond what is expected or due. No one wants to build up this type of interest. It’s bad, hard on you, and can put you under a lot of stress...

What I Learned in Writing 101

...Reflective Essay: What I Learned in Writing 101 Jason E. Mainor UMUC 02 March 2016 Reflective Essay: What I Learned in Writing 101 The fall of 2015 is when I first learned that I had to take Writing 101. I was pretty worried, throughout my time in school, I always struggled with my writing skills. Be that as it may, this class was exactly what I needed to build confidence in my writing. I have discovered many things during this class that I will carry with me while on my journey to obtaining a degree from UMUC. The three most important ones I will be taking away are the proper usage of verb tense throughout my essays, how to come up with and support my thesis, and finally being able to properly alter the tone of my paper effectively based on my audience. Growing up, grammar was never exactly my strongest forte. Throughout my time spent in school I always struggled with the basics of verbs and adjectives, sentence fragments and run-on sentences. Anything and everything with grammar was a hassle for me. For this reason, the fear of writing followed me into college. For example, while writing my initial essay I struggled from beginning to end to use the right verb tense. I was constantly going back and forth from past tense to present tense, and I never noticed it until the professor corrected me on it. Fortunately, when the time came around for my second essay, I was well aware of the issue and was able to use the proper verb tense. For example, I exchanged “am” for the...

Paying College Athletes

...Dominick Cima English 102 Sec. 401 31 January 2015 Argument Essay Paid to Play? Picture Morgantown on a warm Saturday in August. The streets are buzzing with students and families, and nothing but blue and gold tailgates for as far as the eye can see. This is also the case for every other college in the country. College football has become increasingly more popular over the past few years. It has even got to the point that players and coaches have raised the idea that players should be paid. This essay will focus mainly on collegiate football players and whether or not they should be payed. I used to play football in college and I, for one, do not think players should be paid. I believe that, if they were to pay players, the money should be used to benefit the their education in the form of scholarships. Also paying athletes will individualize the sports, much like how professional sports are now. Lastly, paying all athletes would cost far too much for the NCAA. Scholarships as Currency If college athletes were to be paid, it should be in the form of scholarships. From my own experience colleges have switched from the traditional four year scholarship, to one year grants. This is where the argument first stems from. A four year scholarship guarantees the athlete financial support throughout their four year stay at the institution. It covers all the basic finances of a college student such as tuition, fees, and room and board(Mitchell). On the other...

...E-structor Response Form (Your marked-up essay is below this form.) HOW THIS WORKS: Your e-structor has written overview comments about your essay in the form below. Your e-structor has also embedded comments [in bold and in brackets] throughout your essay. Thank you for choosing Smarthinking's OWL; best wishes with revising your paper! *Strengths of the essay: Thanh , thank you for submitting your assignment for review. I am Ann B., your writing tutor. First, I want to point out a strength I noted when I read your paper. This sentence in the introduction presents a question and then answers it: College athletes are supposed to be the best of the best on that level, so why do college athletes not get paid? The question sets up the argument nicely for the reader! Now let’s move on to some areas that need revision. Content Development: A direct quotation like this one is not a good topic or first sentence: McCourt states “The athletes are ones who put in hours of practice and training” ( Evan Rosenfeld and Scarlett McCourt). Your audience may not understand why this quoted passage is important. The topic sentence should present a main point about athletes being paid in your own words. The first point is the hectic schedule. Can you write a topic sentence that introduces this point? I note that the second body paragraph does have a topic sentence introducing a point from the thesis in your own words: Another reason to why college athletes should get paid is they need...

Public Service Announcement

...heart-searching of: parents’ advises, personal hobby, society’s expectation, financial budget…What should we choose when facing such a tough question? In the article “Who are you and what are you doing here?” published in the Oxford American, a Southern literary journal, professor Mark Edmundson gives his own answer from the conclusions he’s drawn from experiences and perception in life. After reading the article, I choose to do my public service announcement in the form of a poster. Part II: As a university professor, Edmundson states targeted readers clearly in the beginning of the article: “the incoming class”, i.e., the incoming college freshmen. Through the essay, the author encourages students to follow dream and study what they’re truly passionate about, not only to comprehend what they’ve learnt but also to apprehend its value to you. He argues against commonly-held view that the mere reason to use higher education is to nail down a high-paying job. “Welcome and congratulations: Getting to the first day of college is a major achievement.” –The author begins the article with an exclamative sentence giving reader –freshmen to be specific- the feeling of achievement satisfaction. Moreover, these warm “welcome” and “congratulations” bring different shade than the rest of the article; it seems like Edmundson tries to give students the run-around by entertaining them with illusions about college with these words. Then he expose it himself “You now may think that you’ve about got...

Personal Responsibility

...for my own future, and whether or not I’m successful or not. No one else is responsible for how my life turns out for me, and only I can benefit from what I put in to my personal growth. I’m responsible to take the initiative to get out there to get what I need to achieve my goals, and better my situation. Before I can achieve my goals for anyone else’s approval of myself I have to do it for myself or I won’t see the task through to the end. When it’s a personal goal the reward takes on a whole different feeling, and meaning to you so that’s why I push myself to attain my degree, and to become successful along my journey. My personal responsibility is also my family, and the fate of their future. My children are my everything, and their future is also my job to see that they become successful adults out in the world. It’s my responsibility to care for them, and to provide them with the tools they need to make it in life. It’s my responsibility to better my family, and also to show my children that without their education life will be a struggle. I can’t just say these things to them without showing them by leading by example, and achieving my goal in attaining my degree. In starting this process it is wise to make a list of those parts of our lives that are inconsistent with the lifestyle that we truly want for ourselves. I began this essay proclaiming that I take responsibility for the current condition of my life; however, there is always room for improvement. To start on the...

...exists there are more options to obtain a higher education.   Both online and traditional colleges have their advantages and disadvantages.   Deciding on which style fits depends on the students’ needs. This will be brought to attention in this essay. It seems in the present day more students are looking for a more convenient way to acquire an education. They are achieving degrees online compared to attending traditional colleges. Online education is becoming more popular than traditional education.   Online education gives more freedom to allow individuals to return to school and to work a full time job at the same time.   This gives students the chance to receive higher education while taking care of their responsibilities in everyday life.   Overall, it is clear that online enrollments nationally have experienced very large growth during the past decade, and evidence points that this growth will continue in the next few years.    With online education, universities can reach vast distances.   In return students can attend creditable schools and receive creditable degrees from rural areas.   Online offerings are becoming very attractive to full-time employees who want to further their careers – or start new ones - through more education. Colleges benefit by expanding their faculty to include qualified teachers nationwide, instructors who log on without leaving home; students benefit by choosing when they telecommute to class.    There are two main types of online courses:...

Social Class

...Hamedani and Mesmin Destin During January’s White House opportunity summit, policy makers and higher education leaders announced over 100 new initiatives designed to bolster first-generation and low-income students’ college success. While students who overcome the odds to gain access to college bring with them significant grit and resilience, the road through college is often a rocky one. First Lady Michelle Obama described the obstacles that first-generation and low-income students commonly confront. No stranger to these challenges, she said: You’re in a whole new world. You might have trouble making friends because you don’t see any peers who come from a background like yours. You might be worried about paying for classes, and food, and room and board because you have never had to set your own budget before. You might be feeling guilty when you call home because Mom and Dad are wondering why you didn’t get a job so you could help support their family. Those are the kinds of obstacles these kids are facing right from day one. Even among the select group that make it to college, first-generation and low-income students, on average, find it harder to fit in, receive lower grades, and drop out at higher rates than do students from higher income backgrounds with college-educated parents (i.e., continuing-generation students). Study after study demonstrates that the financial, academic, and psychological barriers that these students encounter can significantly undermine their performance...

...Assessment Essay p. 5-10 College Learning Essay p. 11-17 Analyzing Arguments Essay p. 18-23 Cover Letter This midterm portfolio shows how I have progressed has a college reader and writer. Before this class I had trouble even understanding how to write a thesis and now I think I can definitely write a college level thesis. I have progressed to know how to incorporate my evidence into my concise and focused thesis statement. For example in the self assessment essay my thesis was, “Due to transferring to many schools over my first two years of college, I feel like I have had the opportunity to build up many habits of mind from Framework for Success in Post-Secondary Writing, especially in flexibility, openness and persistence but still can develop in metacognition and creativity in order to become a more successful college writer.” This showed that I could adapt a thesis to the assignment and it was focused and used my sources. At this point in the semester, a strength I have is the ability to connect source evidence with my thesis. I am able to develop my focused thesis around source-based evidence. For example in the college learning essay I was able to use my interview with my friend who was an elementary teacher to help develop my thesis about how teaching has changed due to technology. I also think another strength I have is organizing my paper in a proper order. In the three essays in this portfolio I organized the essays with...
