What are the coping needs specific to the Aged population today?

Aging is a process that happens to all of us yet it is described and perceived differently by different people. Aging is a natural path of development that takes us through one stage of life to the next. Depending on what stage of development we are going through, as one grows old we anticipate accomplishing different things. The aged are defined as persons over the age of 65. Today, the average life expectancy is approximately 80 years. Due to improved health care, better nutrition and the reduction of infectious diseases people are living longer. The Aged population experience different coping needs than other populations.

The Aged population has to cope with changes in their physical abilities, social and family roles, losses and change, and changes in income. As people age the wear and tear on their bodies causes changes to occur. Very often as people grow older they become fatigued easily, their responses become slower, appearance begins to change, senses begin to diminish and chronic illness may set in causing the fear of loss of independence. This is something that the Aged population has to find ways to cope with. The Aged population has to cope with changes in regards to social and family roles. The family dynamic takes a shift as one’s role within the family changes once again. As people grow old they are the ones being cared for versus the other way around. The aged population very often has to cope with feelings of fear and loneliness due to spouses or friends becoming ill or dying, having to relocate to a new living situation and knowing that the end of life is near. A dramatic change in income can cause the Aged population to have to cope with feelings of loss of self-worth. Often one’s career gives someone a sense of satisfaction

Sleep Disorder

...your eyes for a nap or even get a deep sleep, then you may be struggling with sleeping disorders. These signs can manifest through the feelings of exhaustion despite sleeping for eight or more hours. Dozing off and nodding off during the day may also be experienced during work or study. Such a problem may be the result of health conditions such as depression, which often causes sleeping disorders. Sleep has an essential role in health and well-being throughout one’s life. Receiving enough and high-quality sleep can help boost your physical, social, and mental well-being as well as the quality of life. During sleep, the body works to boost the brain’s functioning while at the same time maintaining one’s physical health. Among the young-aged such as teenagers and children, sleep supports healthy growth and development. Sleep deficiency can happen at any time and cause health problems over time. The health problems in such cases may include poor clarity of thought, lack of concentration at work, poor social and interpersonal interactions, slowed reaction and poor memory in learning among others (Mignot at al. 10073). Somnipathy or sleep disorders can be regarded as medical disorders that affect sleep patterns of both human beings and animals. At times, sleep disorder can be so severe to the extent that they can hinder normal mental, social, emotional, and physical functioning. The common tests of sleep disorders are actigraphy and polysomnography (ADAA, 1). The...

Self- Mutilation

...Self- Mutilation There are a number of different ways to define what self-mutilation entails. It is one of the most commonly used phrases, but researchers and mental health professionals have not been able to agree on one specific definition to explain self-inflicted injury. Hence, self-harm, self-injury and self-mutilation are the common phrases used to refer to this type of behavior ( Zila & Kiselica, 2001). Many people tend to associate self mutilation with suicide, when in fact they are very different. Therefore, when attempting to understand self-mutilation it is important to recognize the distinct differences between self mutilation and suicide. Suicide is an attempt to depart from pain through ending one’s life. While self mutilation is an effort to create relief from a negative affective incident, it differs for each person. It is used as a means for a person to temporarily deal with the pain, rather than abort it all together. In suicidal patients, pain is viewed as everlasting, which makes them feel hopeless. While, on the other hand self-injurers often portray an optimistic attitude (Walsh, 2006). Hence, there is a big difference between the behaviors and intent, which is why it is important to recognize these differences. Self-injurious behavior tends to be separated into two general categories: culturally sanctioned and deviant self mutilation. Culturally sanctioned rituals and practices comprise of ear piercing in the modern U.S culture, sacrament dances amongst...
