...one looks at the life of Theodore Roosevelt, what explicit details can be gathered about him? Due to the multifaceted conglomeration of diversity that was Roosevelt’s extraordinary life, it can be quite hard to determine who exactly our 26th president was. Roosevelt took on many roles throughout his life. “Parachin” (2011) found, “America’s 26th President (1901-09) was a curious blend of cowboy, author, intellectual, environmentalist, outdoorsman, big game hunter, naturalist, peacemaker and war monger” (p. 13). These many roles would lead him on a very thought-provoking adventure through life. Out of all the things that Roosevelt was throughout his life, he was the embodiment of someone that fought for the things he wanted in life. One can see that this quote by Roosevelt sums up who he was perfectly: “It is only through labor and painful effort, by grim energy and resolute courage, that we move on to better things” (Theodore Roosevelt Quotes, n.d.). Theodore Roosevelt was a strong believer in the “strenuous life”. Whether it be from his health, those around him, politics, or nature, Theodore Roosevelt dealt with many obstacles and challenges that would pose to be very arduous for him as he trotted his way through life. On the other hand, one must also look at Roosevelt’s successes and achievements. After a menial amount of time studying Roosevelt, anyone can appreciate the many things Roosevelt achieved throughout his life. Although Theodore Roosevelt’s life may have been filled...

...The Trustbuster If asked how many presidents are featured on face of Mount Rushmore and what where their names, what percentage of people in the United States would know? Many would say the first presidents that came to mind; for example one might guess George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, and perhaps even Thomas Jefferson. However, most would forget the fourth and maybe most important: Theodore Roosevelt. Americas twenty-fourth president was a man of many qualities. He was a graduate of Harvard, an avid hunter, an athlete, and published writer. He possessed these qualities and many more that shaped who he was as a person and president, allowing him to influence many with his ideas. For example, he coined the phrase; “speak softly, but carry a big stick,” a quote that in a way summarizes who he was and how he conducted his presidency. Through examination and extensive research of Theodore Roosevelt’s life and specific accomplishments, it has become clear how influential teddies works as president have been on America today. Theodore Roosevelt was born October 27, 1858 in Gramercy, New York. He was the second of four children and the son of Theodore Roosevelt Sr. To his parent’s dismay, Teddy was a sickly asthmatic child that was bed- ridden for the majority of his early years. Some say he had polio but other sources had conflicting facts and evidence. As a result, Teddy spent the majority of his time reading and writing. He was primarily home-schooled and excelled in most...

...Wiley, Theodore Roosevelt, and the Federal Regulation of Food and Drugs By Anthony Gaughan Food and Drug Law Mr. Peter Barton Hutt Harvard Law School Winter 2004 Introduction In 1906 Congress passed two landmark pieces of legislation: the Pure Food and Drug Act and the Meat Inspection Act. The acts emerged from the reformist ethos of the Progressive Era, a time when the federal government took on a new and much more active role in the everyday lives of ordinary Americans. Of all the laws passed during the Progressive Era, no legislation proved more successful and more enduring than the 1906 food and drug legislation. The acts established the foundations of modern American food and drug law, and gave birth to the Food and Drug Administration. For the first time, the federal government assumed permanent and comprehensive responsibility for the health and safety of the American food and drug supply. Although the statutes have been revised many times since 1906, the essence of modern food and drug law remains consistent with the principles of federal responsibility for consumer safety that underlay the first statutes a century ago. The passage of the 1906 food and drug legislation stemmed from the actions of many people across the political landscape, ranging from Senator Albert Beveridge to socialist writer Upton Sinclair. But no indi- 1 viduals played a larger public role in the passage of the Meat Inspection Act and the Pure Food and Drug Act than Theodore Roosevelt...

...The Panama Canal connecting two Countries The Panama Canal was one of the United States greatest accomplishments. It changed the way the world did business forever, it also had a great effect on mankind. With the French failing at the project and a disease ridden canal everyone thought we the U.S. was crazy at taking this project over. French diplomat Ferdinand de Lesseps was the first to raise the money to construct the canal, due to his success with the Suez Canal. Then on January 1st, 1881 the project began, De Lesseps wanted to construct the canal at sea-level. What he didn’t realize was the rain in Panama would last up to four months and swell the river. There were snakes and insects that would infest the river causing yellow fever and malaria. By 1884 the death rate was over 200 deaths a month and De Lesseps was out of money. At the time that the US acquired the project Theodore Roosevelt was President, who turned out to be a key factor in the building of the canal. He wanted to be able to trade from the New York market to the Asian market using a faster more productive route. During the acquisition the Panamanian people were planning a revolt from the French and wanted President Roosevelt’s support of money and troops. Once the U.S took the project over President Roosevelt appointed John Findlay Wallace a former chief engineer of the Illinois Central Railroad but Wallace left just one year later due to poor work conditions. He was then succeeded by John Frank Stevens...

...Modern History Conflict in the Pacific 1937-1941 Due: Thursday 28th of August, 2008 Alyce Wearne Task: Evaluate the argument that America was justified in using atomic weapons against Japan in 1945. As one of the most significant and consequential decisions in the history of the world, President Harry Truman’s allowance of atomic weapons towards the end of World War II, of which he himself understood would cause both mass devastation and indignation, is still one of the most controversial and heavily debated topics in today’s society. This was partially due to the adverse underestimation and seemingly ignorant approach the American’s had towards their latest development of mass destruction; almost oblivious to the immense aftermath of physical injury, civilian death and emotional torment it would produce for those involved. This decision, ultimately made by one man, affected not only America and Japan, but the world. Dispute over this was, and continues to be highly generated, the event causing anger and infuriation to millions across the world. This resentment did not just accumulate from the lack of awareness and slaughter of innocent life, but from the graphic images shown in newspapers, the casualties, and the torturous amount of death underwent as a result of the bomb. As a Japanese survivor documented: “The appearance of people was . . . well, they all had skin blackened by burns. . . . They had no hair because their hair was burned, and at a glance you...

...with Israel came about W hile many people are led to believe that U.S. support for Israel is driven by the American establishment and U.S. national interests, the facts don't support this theory. The reality is that for decades U.S. foreign policy and defense experts opposed supporting the creation of Israel. They then similarly opposed the massive American funding and diplomatic support that sustained the forcibly established state and that provided a blank check for its aggressive expansion. They were simply outmaneuvered and eventually replaced. Like many American policies, U.S. Middle East policies are driven by a special interest lobby. However, the Israel Lobby, as it is called today in the U.S.[1], consists of vastly more than what most people envision in the word "lobby." As this article will demonstrate, the Israel Lobby is considerably more powerful and pervasive than other lobbies. Components of it, both individuals and groups, have worked underground, secretly and even illegally throughout its history, as documented by scholars and participants. And even though the movement for Israel has been operating in the U.S. for over a hundred years, most Americans are completely unaware of this movement and its attendant ideology – a measure of...
