Totem poles are important because of the stories they tell it can tell a story about the carver or the tribe or even a specific person. If a sculpture of an eagle was held on top of the totem pole in a tribe it would show the pride of the tribe and how they are proud of what they are doing. Some totem poles can just be carved without any color but some have color and those colors represent something. Like the color white is to represent peace and purity. The color red was to represent war and valor and the blood that was shed in Native wars. Blue would represent happiness and would often also be like water or the ocean or river the tribe is by. Yellow was also to mean happiness but also light like the sun they would get this color from tree

Totem By Thomas King Summary

...heard a million of ways but still mean the same thing. In this case, “Totem” by Thomas King and “Great Big Lie” written by Stephan Kakfwi are the two orchestras. When both writings are examined side-by-side, they each show the unfairness, cruelty, and suffering that Native American Peoples have/are facing. Like totems the Native Americans stood tall, they lived off the land, their roots expanding for centuries while gaining the Earth’s trust. In the “Totem” written by Thomas King, Native Americans are portrayed as the totem pole. In the short story, the totem pole is continually making noise. The sounds the totem pole was making are the sounds of an oppressed people. When the totem pole had been...

At Rathward High there are five distinct social groups, each with different traits and standings unique to them. We have the Jocks, which consist of the majority of...

Ralph Savagery Quotes

...At the beginning of the book, he well showed obedience towards those higher up on the social totem pole than him. Few times did he resist authority and challenge society. However, his human behavior started to slowly creep out of him, becoming more and more apparent by the chapter. Rapidly his savagery came out later in the book, showing just how easy it is for a boy of a world power civilization can fall to the extremities of full blown radicalism towards a productive society. After the plane crash landed, Jack had behavior similar to that of any teenage boy of his time period, expressing his opinion brashly yet still making reasonable...

Native American Art

...ART 1010 Three Examples of Native American Art Art is defined differently by each person, and I tend to lean towards a personal definition as well. It is a play on the words of Supreme Court Justice Potter Stewart when he was referring to obscenity. “I know it when I see it.” This allows me to recognize what I consider art, and it also gives me the ability to decide what types of art speak to me. Native American art has always been close to my heart because of my personal ancestry, and I hope to pique the reader’s interest in some of the fine examples of this art that are readily accessible today (1964). Native North American tribes, in large part were nomadic and struggled for their everyday existence. Most native art is considered craft work because they were meant to be utilized as practical tools. Some examples include, woven blankets and rugs, pottery, and baskets. Other pieces of their art fall within a few other categories, and include jewelry, beadwork, and headdresses. The architecture of these tribes may not be considered artistic by some standards, but I feel that there is a certain rustic beauty to it. Each of the pieces I will discuss fall easily within these categories. Design is an important element to any piece of art, and it is especially important for craft pieces that are intended for use. The design must meet certain standards to be useful. For example, a blanket needs to not only keep a person warm, but it must be somewhat light and...

Couragement

...this guy last night about how he feels he's terrible at what he does and that he's at the bottom of the totem pole because he really can't seem to do anything right. I listened to what he had to say and then told him that he really is at the bottom of the totem pole and he really isn't good at what he does. I also told him that he's stagnant and doesn't work hard to better himself. I then went on to tell him that he's a coward and is afraid to try new things because he's afraid of failing. He's afraid of what other people will think if they see him fail. I told him that I'm never going to think anything more of him than that in which he thought of himself (hope I structured that correctly). Thennnnnn I told him lets take a step back from his dark world of hopelessness and pessimism and take a look at things from my perspective. I told him that I see a ton of great things in him and listed off tons of areas where he excels. I told him that he needs to get his life together and stop whining about what he can't do and sharpen his current set of tools, then add to the arsenal. Told him that he doesn't get better because he has already set a limit to his potential and in his eyes growth isn't possible. He said he's at the bottom and can only go down. Quick story... He watched me spot a double full back in the day and went crazy because he had never seen anyone spot one before. He asked me how I did it and I showed him what to spot for. That was ages ago and last night I told him...

African American History

...Southern white man” (Major Problems 160). This was somewhat an unusual stance to take at this time, because the south was segregated. On top of this much of the black community was irritated from this statement, because of the violence the white enforced on the black community. Further on in his speech he also declared another unparticular method for a black leader. He issues the belief that “no race can prosper till it learns that there is as much dignity in tilling a field as writing a poem” (Tuck 103). This seemed outrageous to many, because it appeared as if he was disrespecting his own race. Contextually he was saying to prosper, blacks must work under whites first, before going on to jobs of their own. This idea of working up the totem pole seemed eerie to must blacks, because instead of participating in practices of glory, they would be forced to do hard work that no one else wanted once again. And while many blacks might have felt this way, Washington tells the mostly white crowd, to trust the blacks for they have the, “devotion that no foreigner can match” (Tuck 103). As it states in Tuck after the speech most of the crowd was delirious; whites were happy, and blacks were confused. At the same time Washington thought it was practical for good reason. At this time the majority of blacks were rarely able to find land to farm, and as time passed more and more blacks were running into debt (Tuck 106). So he believed suck it up, and take the dirty jobs. If you have...

Totem, Taboo Freud

...Introduction to philosophy Borislav Tsankovski - 09046631 Totem and Taboo, Sigmund Freud (1912) The teachings of Sigmund Freud have had such a tremendous impact on contemporary culture, but the opinions regarding his doctrine are dualistic and vary from total reject to faithful followers. Between those two poles are some people who try to keep a critical distance and try to identify what is really important and significant in his ideas. Freud’s ideas have a profound effect on modern men’s self-esteem and identity, because the modern man gets angry and bitter when someone touches their identity. On the other hand Freud show’s us deep spiritual movements or “currents” inside ourselves. Freud created a doctrine that meets the most typical modern desire – the desire to build the new image of man. I believe that Totem and Taboo is exactly one of those works which can teach the reader a lot of things about his inner and outer self. And that from that entire information one can derive a blueprint on how to read and recognize the basic truths which were there when human kind made its first steps and will stay with us till the end. That one should really think upon in order to fill in the bits of lost puzzle in time, space and matter, so that one day we actually know who we are and why we are. Throughout his whole scientific work Freud supported the understanding that man evolved from his animal state, because of the cultural and social conditions that came along with...

Five Functions of Mangement

...leading and controlling Reilly, M., Minnick, C., & Baack, D. (2011). I was in the Navy for 20 years and have had a lot of experiences with different types of management, some good and some bad. The first function I will describe is planning. Planning is a systematic process in which managers make decisions about future activities and the key goals that the organization intends to pursue Reilly, M., Minnick, C., & Baack, D. (2011). My experience in the Navy concerning the planning function was extensive. I was able to see the planning stages from every angle throughout the process, from the lowest man on the totem pole to the person developing and executing the plans. My last duty station in the Navy was as an instructor and we had to do a comprehensive curriculum review and change the whole curriculum. During the planning stages we had to determine what our strengths and weaknesses were as it pertained to the content, subjects and personnel that were to be delivering the instruction. The entire planning stage took approximately 6 months to complete and it was extremely daunting. The goals we had set for the curriculum change were attainable because we had several professionals working on the project. This was not a one-person job; it took the whole team to be able to accomplish such an endeavor. Once the planning stage was complete it was time to implement the organizing function. The organizing function typically follows the planning stage. Specific organizing duties...

Role of Women in India

...Developing countries and developed countries differ greatly when it comes to the role that women play in the society, politics and economics. In fact, what seems to distinguish developing countries most from developed ones is the education level, responsibilities, quality of life, legal rights, economic status and occupation,(if any) of the women in that country. For example, in the developing country of India, women are very low on the totem pole of society, while in a more developed country such as Japan, women have a much more active role in society and are virtually equal to men. In the developing country of India, women are left to do the work of maintain the household by performing menial tasks of subsistence farming and raising children. They are often the most exploited and least privileged person in the house (Park). Being a woman in India is a dangerous thing for several reasons. Economically it is more taxing to have a girl than it is to have a boy because if you have a girl then you have to pay a dowry to the man’s family who she is to be married to. In India all ways of telling the sex of a baby have been banned from use because many families will perform an abortion on the baby if it turns out that it is a girl. Also, if the mother can’t produce a boy, she is in great jeopardy of being killed. This is called a Dowry Death, and a 1997 report claimed that there are at least five thousand “Dowry Deaths” a year. This type of thinking is embedded in...

Functionalist Theories of Religion

...Functionalist theories of religion Understand functionalist theories and explain the role and function of religion, and how religion contributes to social stability. Durkheim on religion: He believes that it is a central institution for creating and maintaining value consensus and social solidarity. The key feature was not the belief in God, but a fundamental distinction between the sacred and profane found in all religions. The sacred and the profane For Durkheim, the key feature was not a belief in gods, spirits or the supernatural, but a fundamental distinction between the sacred and the profane found in all religions. The sacred are things set apart and forbidden, that inspire feelings of awe, fear and wonder, and are surrounded by taboos and prohibitions. By contrast, the profane are things that have no special significance-things that are ordinary and mundane. Furthermore, a religion is never simply a set of beliefs. It involves definite rituals or practices in relation to the sacred, and these rituals are collective-performed by social groups. The fact that sacred things evoke such powerful feelings in believers indicated to Durkheim that this is because they are symbols representing something of great power. In his view, this thing can only be society itself, since society is the only thing powerful enough to command such feelings. When they worship the sacred symbols, therefore, people are worshipping society itself. Although sacred symbols vary...

Identity In Toni Morrison's Song Of Solomon

...In Toni Morrison's Song of Solomon, Milkman allows the origin of his name to coincide with his own personal value and identity for an unfortunately long duration of the story. He is so curious for most of his life about his name that he subconsciously adds too much value to the origin of it, leading to his growing distress and dissatisfaction with his family and even somewhat himself. Had Milkman liked the story/background of his name, he would of held its meaning high on a totem pole, yet since he disdains its meaning he begins to eventually care less about his own name and more about making a name for himself. Obviously Milkman isn’t trying to change his own name because he knows it is stuck, but he finally comes to the decision to let go...
