Upon reflection of the first vignette I am able to gain a clear understanding of effective communication therapy techniques. What stands out to me the most from the first video is the trust that both sally and her husband have in the paramedics. There is a sense of complete faith and willing participation from both Sally and her husband. How the paramedics achieve this involvement is by implementing a holistic approach and some great communicative skills such as expressing empathy, active listening, encouragement and providing information. 'The focus needs to be person-centred rather than nurse- or task-focused and the relationship is a key element’(Bach and Grant, 2011). By taking time to do this, health care workers can advance their therapeutic relationships with patients, encouraging compassionate care. From this we can therefore see that it is different from social and collegial communication. In this essay I will discuss the communication techniques used and demonstrated in the first vignette, how they are applied and explain why they are successful. Empathy in one of many ways can be described as the ability to supportively communicate a sensitive awareness and affirmation of another person's feelings and the unique meanings attached to them (Mearns and Thorne, 2007). Healthcare workers who are committed and compassionate also must use empathy as a tool to build a rapport with their patient. This is demonstrated in the first vignette through the paramedics active listening and understanding of concern by Sally and her husband. He allows them to voice their feelings, identify and acknowledge their emotional experience in order to treat Sally in a respectful, dignified way. He also uses touch as a means of connecting and reassuring, by touching her hand he is telling her (non verbally) that he is listening, she can trust him.

...What can I take away from the experience of observing this video that will help me build knowledge and self-awareness in one of the following areas: therapeutic communication; or inter-professional communication? DOCTOR EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT VIDEO * Therapeutic Communication ‘Therapeutic communication is defined as the face-to-face process of interacting that focuses on advancing the physical and emotional well-being of a patient’ (Laffan. S, 2011) and as ‘a process in which the nurse consciously influences a client or helps the client to a better understanding through verbal or nonverbal communication’ (Mosby's Medical Dictionary, 8th edition. © 2009, Elsevier.). Reflecting on the ‘Doctor Emergency Department’ video (Doctor Emergency Department), I chose to concentrate on therapeutic communication. Therapeutic Communication uses many different strategies to gain trust, demonstrate empathy and to provide the best and most comfortable care for the patient. There are also barriers involved with therapeutic communication, which will hinder healthcare. Therapeutic communication differs from our every ‘day to day’ communication between friends or family (social relationship) as it is a learned skill, that is patient focused and is beneficial to the patient. Therapeutic communication has a defined life line and the relationship will cease when the healthcare for that patient ends. Also ‘The Nursing and...

We stand both before and after, balancing on the razor edge of the Event Horizon of the Singularity. That this sublime juxtapositional tautology has gone unnoticed until now is itself remarkable. We're so exquisitely privileged to be living in this time, to be born right on the precipice of the greatest paradigm shift in human history, the only thing that approaches the importance of that reality is finding like minds that realize the same, and being able to make some connection with them. "We were renting rooms in a big house with a shared kitchen. I was cooking breakfast when I looked up and saw this man-Victor- walk into the room. I had the strangest reaction. My legs wanted to carry me to him, but my head was telling me to stay away. The feelings were so strong that I felt faint and had to sit down." Once Maggie recovered from shock, she introduced herself to Victor, and the two of them spent half the morning talking. "That was it," said Victor. ...or at least uncomfortable, attacks upon the accepted wisdom of the time." GRE AWA Analytical Writing ISSUE Essay Sample Solution – 1 “The opposite of a correct statement is a false statement. But the opposite of a profound truth may well be another profound truth.” ― Niels Bohr[->0] This is a proven fact that truth is the initial stage of progress. However, it is also believed that truth always starts away from the traditions and conventions. Therefore, people consider truths as attacks upon their beliefs, which people are following from ages. Truth also means some new facts that are unknown to us. People do not want to deviate from the facts, which they have learnt from their ancestors, and it is true to say that shedding ones dogmas is often difficult. They feel that it is an attack on their wisdom. If we look at the history of the world, we will find many examples where truth has generated commotions in the society. Different people have different views about the existence of God, life after death and origin of earth etc. For example, people took a long time to accept that the earth is round. Religious leaders and clergymen opposed this idea as it was against what they were teaching. Similarly, when Polish astronomer, Copernicus discovered that the earth goes round the sun and not vice versa, he was opposed by churches for many years. In fact he and his supporters were convicted for their ideas. Hence, it is very difficult to change the traditions that are...
