...money, and what it can do for us. If we have money we can get whatever we need or want. The word money means a lot to some people in this world, but what about the word success. What does success truly mean? How do we know if we have succeeded in our life? Does having plenty money makes you successful? These are all good questions to ask yourself. In The Great Gatsby, it shows how the characters may have mixed success and having tons of money together. Nick, Daisy, and Gatsby were important characters in this story because they each portray average people handling money. Handling money can be a very hard thing too because it can influence people and what they do. Do...

...Direct pressure on dissenters is when the members of the group are not allowed to express feelings against any of the groups teachings. This means that the group members must agree with all of the groups beliefs (Janis). In the beginning of the work, the people begin to speak of how the lottery is being given up in the north village. Mrs. Adams also speaks of the vast amount of places that have already quit lotteries. However, Old Man Warner states, "Listening to the young folks, nothing's good enough for them. Next thing you know, they'll be wanting to go back to living in caves, nobody work any more, live hat way for a while. Used to be a saying about 'Lottery in June, corn be heavy soon.' First thing you know, we'd all be eating stewed chickweed and acorns. There's always been a lottery" (Shirley Jackson 5). From the word of Old Man Warner, we are given an understand of selection bias at hand (Janis). Old Man Warren believes that the people of the town would not be civilized or sophisticated without the lottery. He makes them believe that the only way to keep order in the town is to continue using the lottery. This is why the people believe that the lottery is morally...

... Spring 2015 My Perception of the Good Life Everyone has their own view on what success means to them. Some people believe that money and/or expensive material items determine how successful a person is. Other people believe that success is measured by how happy a person is with his or her life, by measuring their job satisfaction or their family life. I believe that a person is truly successful when he or she has lived their life to the fullest and is completely content with where they have wound up in the end and has no regrets. In this brief essay I will be telling you about my view on true success in life. I will start off by telling you why material success could be included in my opinion, then I will tell you why a good quality of life is a big part, and finally I will tell you my exact view on what I want my future to look like so that I know that I have, in my opinion, had a successful life. First, I will begin with some of the material items that some people think they need to be successful and why. People that think they need material items to be successful in life probably will not go a day in their life without working and on top of that they will probably end up hating their job. This however will not change their view on what it means to be successful. There is no doubt that they will be happy with the beach house in Florida or the million dollar Lamborghini Maserati, but for what exactly? To be miserable at the job that has gotten you to this point in life...

...the right direction to achieving college success. Students enter school under a lot of stress, with the expectation of succeeding in school. Students have grades to worry about, financial concerns and what they will and won’t be able to do socially. From an early age most parents teach their children that getting an education will earn them more money each year that they earn more if they have Bachelor’s degree. Adding all of these together can send that stress level through the roof. Understanding how to prepare yourself for that change, developing your personal responsibility can help the student go far. (Murphy, n.d.) Personal responsibility can be defined in multiple ways by multiple people. According to "Answers.com" (2011), " Personal Responsibility is taking responsibility for your actions, accepting the consequences that come from those actions and understanding that what you do impacts those around you.” My definition is this: Holding your self-accountable when nobody else will. Finishing what you started when all you want to do is quit. Personal responsibility can be defined in so many ways and I don’t think there is one definition that could quite possibly be a one size fits all. Each person has to look inside themselves and decide what they think it means and how they will apply it. There is certainly a relationship between personal responsibility...

...Today, I want to talk about what everyone wants: success and happiness. No, I'm not trying to give you a philosophy lesson. I'm here to talk about two very simple things. That's it. Just two simple things. Success and the real meaning of happiness. Now of course, everybody wants to be successful. So, what is real success? Ralph Waldo Emerson said his definition of success was to laugh often and to win the respect of intelligent people. A lot of students say that going into a good university is success. Some people say getting into a high position in society is success. What is your definition of success? Becoming a pro gamer? Becoming a CEO of a famous company? Some may be the same, but as you see every person's definition of 'success' is different. Personal success comes in many different forms and your concept of being a success might not be the same as mine. If you want to be successful in your life, then the very first thing you should do is to take the time to decide exactly what “success” means to you. Never mind what it means to anyone else, what does it mean to you? To some people the concept of being a success is earning a lot of money. In fact society seems to base the whole concept of success primarily by how much money a person earns. I'm often amazed at how many people define success as making (or having) a lot of money. The way I see it, everybody's definition of success can be mapped on a simple grid. The way a lot of people think, success should be defined as...

...American Dream and their attitude of achieving it can vastly vary. In the novel, “The Great Gatsby” by F. Scott Fitzgerald, the author displays The American Dream through a corrupt love and the idea of becoming wealthy and having the ability to acquire anything. Jay Gatsby does not truly love Daisy, rather he sees her as an object he must acquire in order to achieve his personal vision of the American Dream. First of all, Gatsby wants success and views Daisy as the means to achieving it. Second, Daisy is treated and viewed as a possession that Jay Gatsby has to attain under any circumstances to fulfill his American Dream. Lastly, Gatsby is trying to set up an image and reputation for...

...FOUNDATIONS FOR GENERAL EDUCATION AND PROFESSIONAL SUCCESS PA11BSB08 Professors Name January 3rd, 2013 Introduction The key to a successful future starts with being accountable for one’s own actions. And to obtain that key, it is necessary to have an understanding of what it means to be personally responsible. In this essay, I will cover the following; the definition of personal responsibility and what it means to me, I’ll explain the relationship between personal responsibility and college success and include a preliminary plan to ensure I practice personal responsibility in my college education. Defining Personal Responsibility According to "Bouncy--Addition" (2012), Personal responsibility can also be referred to as "accountability," which is defined by Merriam-Webster as "the quality or state of being accountable; especially: an obligation or willingness to accept responsibility or to account for one's actions." This should generally be taken to mean that, to be accountable for oneself, one would admit to one's mistakes, make an attempt to make those mistakes right, and live in a way that does not harm others whenever possible (para. 2). I agree with the quoted statement, but to me it also means following laws, rules, and regulations, etc. I have an obligation to read all chapters and turn in my homework on time. Also, I am accountable for my own actions; because no one should have to tell me to...

...in a big house, owning all the latest cars and could even be just learning how to tie their shoe laces. Success could mean anything to anyone. Your definition of success could be very different to other people. In fact, your definition of success could be an epitome of failure to someone. It may also be possible that your definition of success is unreachable and a fantasy to others. So, what really is the definition of success? For me, true success requires appreciation and contentment – both of which are traits that are genuinely difficult to attain. People nowadays are working so hard in order to get more than what they have and more than what other people have. They treat life as a competition and I think that, if that would be the mindset of everyone, then we won’t really achieve success, just people pushing past each other and treating everyone as a rival. If everyone would just slow down, stop running, appreciate what they have and be contented with it, then even the slightest achievement would mean great success. Now, you might say “Whoa! being successful is too much work.” Yes, being successful is not easy, it does not happen overnight and hardly anyone in this world is truly, and genuinely successful but, success is a decent goal to strive for. Just remember, Success does not come from what others believe about you. Success comes from what you believe about...

...responsibilities, to be truly successful in college a student must demonstrate a higher level of personal responsibility. According to the Oxford English Dictionary, Responsibility is “A moral obligation to behave correctly towards or in respect of a person or thing. With to, towards, or for.” Personal Responsibility is the voice in our head, consider it our inner compass that tells us what needs to be done in order to achieve a goal. In order to practice personal responsibility on must take action on their inside voice, and do what needs to be done to achieve a particular outcome. Without some degree of personal responsibility, success in anything is impossible. This is especially true when it comes to college. College Success and Personal responsibility go hand in hand, if a student does not demonstrate discipline, and understand that not being responsible for their actions can have serious consequences, the motivation to be successful will never fully materialize, and a student’s full potential will not be achieved. A student must have a clear vision of what they want to accomplish, and what the end will mean. To achieve your goals practicing personal responsibility, a student must fully vest themselves into the future they want to have. If a student does not have a clear vision of the end, and fully understand what they need to accomplish, then they have no motivational driver to finish. Every student needs this driver, and then they can focus on what is needed to accomplish...

...Machiavelli, the first modern thinker, dedicated The Prince to Lorenzo De Medici and the De Medici family as a “how to guide” on becoming a successful ruler and more importantly, how not to be a successful ruler. As in any philosopher’s works, there are many components that are comprised into one common theme. Machiavelli presents a strong methodology and main concept which is to act in your own self-interest if you want to become a leader, and to do so by any means necessary. In The Price, one of his most famous works, Machiavelli establishes his leadership guidelines on specific categories such as virtue, goodwill, hatred, and reputation, just to name a few. Machiavelli’s goal in The Prince is to distinguish why human nature is the leading cause of a princes’ ultimate success or failure. Machiavelli strongly feels that the idea of politics is not a natural, innate part of humankind. It is crucial for a prince to reflect on the actions of great men that came before him and the history surrounding them. Within the text, Machiavelli does not focus on unity nor does he focus on the virtuous soul. He strictly concentrates on consequences because they are facts which we can verify. Due to this belief, Machiavelli’s ideas represent the consequentialist approach to morality. Meaning, consequences are driven purely by an individual’s actions. Therefore, the means by which individuals go about taking those actions are driven and determined by the existence, or lack thereof, of one’s morals,...

...Albert Bateh Dr. Haddorff Assignment 3 What are the most important characteristics of a “green business” or “sustainable business?” How can business be a force for good by addressing the problems associated with the environmental crisis? In answering this question, be sure to draw from chapter 10, the Anderson video, and 3 additional outside sources. Going Green or going home. Business throughout the world has evolved since the first traders used to barter for goods. Today we keep in mind the ever changing global economy, and how it has effected our environment as a whole. In this paper we will be looking at different characteristics of a “green business” or in other words, “sustainable business”. How businesses can be a force of good by addressing some problems associated with environmental issues of our world as we see it today. Also we will be drawing and interpreting some additional sources that will further support as well as debate our “green business” characteristics. Lets start by stating there is a difference between “green business” and a “sustainable business”. A sustainable business is not necessarily green. You can have a company who makes many profits and has many millions of dollars invested into it, but they could be doing absolutely no environmentally friendly to help the world. Just because they could be considered a successful company, does not mean that they have reached the level that they are at today by doing things completely environmentally friendly...

...value.This is my topic for today. What does it mean Try not to become a man of success but rather a man of value? Well, becoming someone of success is only a fraction of the bigger picture. Success can not be placed on a scale and weighed by any factors in your life nor can it be judged by the accomplishments you have tackled. Therefore, the word success becomes truly what it is, just a word. The dictionary defines the word success as one that succeeds but succeeds at what? Succeeds at meeting his goals or succeeds at life? If you think that becoming successful is reaching the goals you have set for yourself and you are constantly setting goals to better improve your lifestyle, your health, your future; then let me ask you this. If you have succeeded in obtaining your goals and you continue to set new goals to make you and your family life better, how can you be a success if you have yet to succeed with your new goals? There is actually an answer to this and Albert Einstein figured it out decades ago. Become someone of value. Let's look at that closer. Become someone of value. What does that mean? What is the difference between becoming a man of success and becoming a man of value? Success is about what you have earned and value is about what you can offer from what you have earned. Becoming someone of value represents a much larger and more important part of your life. If you succeed in everything in your life but do not give back with what you have learned from your accomplishments...

...written on not well organized. You should arrange material so it’s easy for you to review and understand it. Experimenting with different organizational techniques will also help you find an approach that is helpful to you. Encoding is another helpful step of the process. To help your memory process try to pay attention to one thing, do not split your attention with different issues. Talk about key information that needs to be remembered. When you process the information think about it and truly process it, use mental pictures if possible to “double-encode” the information. Next is rehearsing this is the step I mostly use. Some people find it helpful to rewrite notes as a form of rehearsing. I personally take flash cards and put key information on them I’m not too sure about and study from them. Study groups can also help people rehearse, just seeing how someone else interrupted the learning material. When reading the material ask yourself questions, “what did I just read”, “what does this mean”, also test yourself on the information you have learned. The finally step to this process is to retrieve. I really am not good at this step but it is always room for improvement. Remember the test is full of questions you have already encoded. Make sure you eat a good meal before a big exam, and most of all take a deep breath and don’t panic. The website I found and that I decided to use was from Rasmussen College, and the article was...

...children, the end result is the same, we want what’s best for them and we want to see them happy. In the article “Why Chinese Mothers Are Superior” by Amy Chua, Chua talks about how the Chinese way is the best way to raise a child. She compares her style against “Westerner parents” in which Hanna Rosin defends the “Westerners” in her article “Mother Inferior?” Chua is a very strict mother, she considers herself what is called a “Chinese mother” which is a parenting style most Chinese mothers live by. Rosin is what Chua would call a “Westerner”. Who is to say one parenting technique is better than the other? Rosin brings up a good point in her article defending all the “Western parents”. The two techniques are similar in ways and different in others, but the sole purpose is to see your child grow into a healthy, happy, successful individual. Chinese mothers restrict their children from doing what they want to do, they believe that “they know what’s best for their children”, (Chua, 2011) which is true amongst both techniques. The difference is that Chinese mothers will restrict what their children can do and force them to study and practice for hours until they have perfected it. They want their children to be the best at everything they do, and this requires compromising fun and friends as a child. This Chinese style restricts them from having play dates, attend sleepovers, be in school plays, watch TV or play computer games, or even choose their own extracurricular activities. (Chua...

...big names in art and music of their time, people still had a passion for the arts and had opportunities to experience them at smaller, less known, places. As society has progressed over the years, art slowly has become more and more accessible to the people- as it should be. In fact, I believe that without an audience, art cannot be truly considered art. “Art is a social label, a negotiation between the artist, object (or performance), and the viewer” (Best). Art should be made for the people and not be limited to certain audiences. An artist should create with the goal of connecting to as many people as possible through their work. As stated earlier, historically, art has been seen as something only the privileged could truly appreciate. This could not be farther from the truth! Art is something that everyone can enjoy, experience, and strive to understand. Art should not discriminate or exclude a certain audience, it should bring together all people to evoke a response, send a message, or to maybe just enjoy looking at. During class, we were given a presentation that featured an artist name Cindy Sherman. Sherman had a quote that exemplifies what and who art should really be made for. “When I was in school I was getting disgusted with the attitude of art being so religious or sacred, so I wanted to make something which people could relate to without having read a book about it first. So that anybody off the street could appreciate...
