Through the writing of Charles Dickens’s A Christmas Carol, the reader experiences the transformation of a man who once was gloomy and sad but then finds his meaning in life. Scrooge travels to view his past, present, and future self with the help of three ghosts. The red mansion described is a symbol for the inner workings of Scrooge’s character. Without delay the description of Scrooge’s morality is prominent as Dickens writes, “They left the high-road, by a well remembered lane”(Dickens,20). First and foremost taking the high road often means rising above, and being more mature about situations. Moreover, Scrooge didn’t hide his emotions and feelings that were inside of him. This becomes unveiled by Dickens writing, “their windows broken, and their gates decayed”(21). Normally for a mansion the windows and gates are some of the first perceptions given to a person. The broken windows and disgusting gates cause a feeling of hesitation invoked on someone. When somebody’s first impression causes chills to go through another's body or to feel hesitant, it generally says something about the character or appearance of the original person. Scrooge is exactly like this, people tend to avoid him because of the first impressions they receive. Overall, the red mansion that Dickens dictates directly symbolizes Scrooge as a whole, including appearance and character.
