I am going to do everything I can to persuade the reader that what I am writing is gospel. No other opinion matters but mine. I believe that a good persuasive paper should present the facts first. The writer must do his/her research before they can even present their opinion on the subject. Being knowledgeable of the topic that you are going to discuss is going to have your readers very interested because they can always, after reading your writing, always research the topic on their own. By examining some of the authors in the book, Linda Flowers and Anne Lamott are the authors that connected best with improving my writing skills. Anne Lamott a graduate from Drew School, tells all her new students on the first day of a workshop that good writing is about telling the truth. Telling the truth in an interesting way is not as easy as it seems. Most lose faith. Their sense of self and story shatters in crumbles to the ground. The first month of the English 0890 class was intense, the students had to do a special analysis writing exercise called “Quote analysis scaffold”. It is the developing of many skills in one exercise. It helps develop reading and vocabulary comprehension. After the quote analysis scaffold is made, it can be used in the essay as a hook or concluding thought. We ended up doing around ten of these exercises. After writing the quote, provided from the teacher, this analysis was made from the following steps: The first thing was to do a research online about the author and make two to three sentences, on average, about who he was and what were his major contributions to society. Second, the students had to look for unknown words and their definition in the dictionary. Most other people take their identity for granted. Not the Palestinian, who is required to show proofs of identity more or less constantly." (Page 546) Said, being Palestinian himself, tells us this story in what was called a "hybrid" type of writing. He does this by letting the pictures take precedence in telling his story but then describes each picture by going back and forth from a history point of view, to his own recollections of his childhood. The way he describes each picture makes you feel as if you were at one time in that picture and can feel an emotional connection to it. Through each photo, we get a really sense of what it is like to be Palestinian, to have it all taken away and how they started new. The way Said puts the story together without any time frame, is an example of why his writing style was described as a hybrid. He will start with describing a picture by telling us facts about his country and then interrupt himself, like he's actually have a conversation with the reader and tell us a memory, or how that particular photo makes him feel.
