Chapter5: Physical Development in Infancy & Toddlerhood
GURE 5.21
Acting on the environment plays a major role in perceptual differentiation
Crawling and walking change the way babies perceive a sloping surface. The newly crawling infant on the left plunges headlong down the slope. He has not yet learned that it affords the possibility of falling. The toddler on the right, who has been walking for more than a month, approaches the slope cautiously. Experience in trying to remain upright but frequently tumbling over has made him more aware of the consequences of his movements. He perceives the incline differently than he did at a younger age.
Summary
Body Growth
Describe major changes in body size, proportions, muscle–fat makeup, and skeletal growth over the first two years.
■ Height and weight gains are greater during the first two years than at any other time after birth. Body fat is laid down quickly during the first nine months, whereas muscle development is slow and gradual. Parts of the body grow at different rates, following the cephalocaudal and proximodistal trends, resulting in changing body proportions.
■ Skeletal age, a measure based on the number of epiphyses and the extent to which they are fused, is the best way to estimate the child’s overall physical maturity. At birth, the bones of an infant’s skull are separated by six gaps, or fontanels, which permit the skull to expand as the brain grows.

Brain Development
Describe brain development during infancy and toddlerhood, current methods of measuring brain functioning, and appropriate stimulation to support the brain’s potential.
■ Early in development, the brain grows faster than any other organ of the body. Once neurons are in place, they rapidly form synapses and release neurotransmitters, which cross synapses to send messages to other neurons. During the peak period of synaptic growth in

(OBS! Emmett Till Paper

...The Untold Story of Emmett Till Unless you have watched “The Untold Story of Emmett Louis Till,” you do not know the racial dynamics that led to the Civil Rights Movement. The murder of Emmett Till was the first media event of the Civil Rights Movement. It demonstrated the horrors of racism in an event circulated throughout America and around the world. African Americans clearly understood that all African Americans were under attack, that no African-American male in the South was safe. The murder of Emmett Louis Till was to African Americans what the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor was to Americans in December 1941, or the attack of 9/11 to Americans of our own day. We therefore take refuge in telling you what happened only because why it happened is too difficult to handle, so irrational as to be incomprehensible. Emmett Louis Till was a fourteen-year-old African American born July 25, 1941 on the south side of Chicago, Ill. He was murdered by Roy Bryant and his half brother, John W. Milam, in Money, Mississippi on August 28, 1955 for "Wolf Whistling" at Carolyn Bryant, wife of Roy Bryant. Against the advice of A.A. Rayner, Emmett's mother insisted on an open casket funeral. More than 50 thousand people passed the open coffin. When Jet Magazine published a picture of the disfigured corpse of Emmett Till, millions across the world read about the lynching of the fourteen-year-old Emmett Till. Newspapers across the world carried the story. Roy Bryant and J.W. Milam were acquitted...

The Help

...one of the most acclaimed movies of the film season. It was nominated for many industry awards, including Academy, Golden Globe, and Screen Actors Guild awards. The Help is based off the relationship of a white female journalist and two black maids in Jackson, Mississippi during the 1960’s. Eugenia “Skeeter” Phelan is the main protagonist. As a “home help” columnist for the Jackson Journal, she interviews Aibileen Clark (the second protagonist) for some remedial advice. Ms. Clark worked for Ms. Leefolt, who had a daughter Mae Maubly whom she adored. These interviews eventually evolve into journals about Aibileen’s life as a maid for white households. Although Aibileen is reluctant to tell her story (due to the danger), the death of Medger Evers and a sermon by her church minister convinced her to “do the right thing”. Ms. Clark manages to convince her good friend Minny Jackson into telling her story. Ms. Jackson was a maid for Mrs. Walters, an elderly woman and her daughter, Hilly Holbrook. Ms. Holbrook, the town’s racist gossip, advocated for separate bathrooms for house help because of “different diseases”. This belief lead to Minny’s firing after refusing to walk through a tornado to an outhouse to use the bathroom. Phelan grew disenfranchised with Holbrook’s racist attitudes, in part to her affection for her house help—Constantine Bates. She then got into contact with Harper & Row Publishing, which agreed to look at Phelan’s writings. Due to her superb work, she gets the...

Martyr Medgar Evers Research Paper

...Martyr Medgar Evers, was an important leader in the civil rights struggle in Mississippi during the three of the jim crow laws. According to pbs article on evers the author states, “Evers had a strong, devoutly Christian mother and a fearless father, who taught his sons never to be afraid of whites.” One way that Evers stood strong during the segregation time is that he grew up with his father motto. As he grew older he tried to live every day by that saying, this is one reason why he was a strong civil right leader. The same article by pbs also asserts “ They tried to register to vote in the 1946 election campaign but were turned away at the polling station by armed whites. “ Most people would be in fear of going a step farther in the fight...

Female Leader: How Did She Come to Be?

...Abstract Women leaders are great at what they do, but not many people know of the struggles that they had to overcome in order to get to the position they are at today. Dr. Karrin Wilks is one of the many female leaders out there who have come a long way to become Interim Provost and Senior Vice President of Medgar Evers College. Female Leader Since the ancient times, men have been the only gender allowed to be present in important meetings and discussions. Women were seen as a nuisance because men see women as creatures that tend to act impetuously. They are seen as someone who would act based on their emotions and because of that, they cannot get anything serious done. Men think that if every action is based on one’s emotions, for example if women did to want to sign a contract with someone they did not like, then they would have missed a great chance in being able to help their company’s finance problems. Society believed that women were only suitable to be caregivers while the men were the breadwinners. But then came World War II and men went off to war. Women entered the workforce and started working “male” jobs (jobs that were considered too physically hard for them). Slowly careers such as ones in the business field had more and more women entering them. Leadership roles no longer pertained to men only, but women as well. Many women have been given more control over their own lives. They not only work but have to take care of their family also. Even though they have...

...The song is her response to the murder of Medgar Evers in Mississippi; and the bombing of a church in Birmingham, Alabama, killing four black children. On the recording she cynically announces the song as "a show tune, but the show hasn't been written for it yet". The song begins jauntily, with a show tune feel, but demonstrates its political focus early on with its refrain "Alabama's got me so upset, Tennessee's made me lose my rest, and everybody knows about Mississippi goddam". In the song she rails on the common argument at the time that civil rights activists and African Americans should "go slow" and make changes in the United States incrementally: "Keep on sayin' 'go slow'...to do things gradually would bring more tragedy. Why don't you see it? Why don't you feel it? I don't know, I don't know. You don't have to live next to me, just give me my equality!" Feldstein demonstrates Simone’s increasing politicization through textual analysis of songs like “Mississippi Goddam”, her involvement with various organizations, and her on-stage embrace of African culture and clothing. Feldstein analysis describes Simone’s denunciation of the “going slow” and outspoken criticism of gradual change in race relations in the early 1960s, much before the traditionally-held rise of black power or second-wave feminism in the late 1960s and 1970s. Feldstein presents accounts of her fundraising benefits for SNCC, CORE, NAACP and other groups to show her desirability as a performer whose...
