As an audience member who has never seen A Chorus Line before, I did not know what to expect. I knew the music slightly from hearing it on my Pandora radio station and from clips on YouTube but I had never seen the show completely put together. The show was exciting and fun to watch, and the moment the song “What I did for Love” started and the actors told me what they did for their love, I felt a deep connection with each and every actor on the stage. The song is at the end of the show, but the connections I felt with the characters lasted the entire span of the production. Their facial expressions and body language told a story in itself and I really felt the anxiety their characters were feeling. Everyone seemed consistent and in character the whole time, even when they were in the dark background light and not the main focus. I specifically enjoyed the actors who got “cut” from the audition in the show because they really made believable characters for themselves even though they were only on stage for a short amount of time. I followed them more than the principle characters in the beginning because I noticed that they were not as good as the leads, this being the purpose of all their characters. They intended to show that they were not as strong as others, and they stood out in a very great way in doing so. Many of the principle actors made the story believable through their stage presence. These actors include Alexis Taylor who played Maggie and Hannah Brake who played the character Sheila. Alexis had a presence that made you not want to look away. She always told the story truthfully and grasped the audience’s attention with her strong speaking and singing voice. Hannah also had many similar qualities as Alexis but she had a certain character trait that was intriguing and humorous to the audience. Their ability to act through lines, choreography and music was extremely believable and entertaining to watch. Actors like the ones in A Chorus Line are the kind of actors that I look up to and use as motivation for my future. Their ability to seamlessly perform in a huge choreography filled show and make me, as an audience member, believe in every moment is something I look up to and aspire to do. Going back to the song “What I did For Love” and remembering the lyrics, I know that what I will do for love is similar to what the characters in the show did for their love. Having that connection to the characters and really believing the actors as to who they portrayed makes me truly understand everything that happens in the show. I hope to one day perform in this show and be able to be as sincere as the actors in this production
