Many presidents let their traces in the United States history. One of them is Abraham Lincoln. Abraham Lincoln is the 16th president in the history of the United States. Lincoln was at the head of the Republican Party and he was first elected by the Nation in 1860. His presidency is associated with many historic events that will mark the United States. More precisely, Lincoln’s presidency is characterized by the Civil War, which started in 1861. The Civil war was mostly composed of two opponents: The North and the South (Confederate States) of the United States. The North was in favor of the abolition of slavery while the South was not. This proclamation is changing the status of a good majority of slaves in the South from slaves to free. A little bit later, in 1865, Lincoln will pass the “anti-slavery amendment,” most commonly known as the Thirteen Amendment. However, a controversy arises from Lincoln’s presidency. The controversy about Abraham Lincoln and the abolition of slavery is that some people describe Abraham as a great thinker and influencer while other people describe him more as an opportunist which used the abolition of slavery for political and economical reasons. The opinions can be separated in two big categories which are: that Abraham Lincoln was a great thinker that is inspiring or that Abraham Lincoln was more like an opportunist than a “hero.” An historian even goes to describe him as a racist.
