...What is Art? What is art? I feel that art begins from a person’s imagination and it’s up to the person to turn their imagination into visual art, for people to enjoy its natural beauty. Art is an object or thing such as a painting, photograph, building, film, play, drawing, bowl, song, etc… that catches our attention, making us stop in our tracks to admire it’s beauty and wonder about the artist. It makes me ask myself, how someone could come up with the idea to create such a beautiful piece of art. I believe art is created for one to express his or her emotion to others. Dark colors in photo’s and paintings can express sadness and /or fear. While, bright bold colors like in Dale Chihuly’s glass work expresses fun and happiness. Art to one person may not be art to another. Everyday objects we use may not be art to us now but could become art in the future. What is and isn’t art changes over time. Besides the obvious such as a painting, drawing, sculpture, photo, etc… I see buildings and bridges as art. The Mackinaw Bridge for example is one of the longest brides in the world. It is slightly over 26,000 feet long, can hold the weight of all the vehicles crossing it everyday and on a windy day the bridge can be seen swaying back in forth in the wind. That to me is true art. Another architecture art piece, to me is the pyramids in Egypt. Art takes a certain type of talent depending on the profession. There are wood carvers, ice sculptures, snow sculptures, glass blowing, weaving...

...Art is a practice that refers to the decisions and actions that affect choices, perceptions, ways of working and views of an artist. You are capturing your impressions of a scene before you. In art, you are able to make something beautiful out of the ordinary. There is a relationship between artists and the world around them, and the world is constantly changing. Humans have always struggled to find a unique way of trying to express themselves and because of this concept of art formed. Art is considered by many to be the ultimate form of human expression. Many assume that art has a definition, but for me this is not the case. Art, it can be said, is “in the eye of the beholder.” This simply means that what you consider art, someone else would not. Art is part of a person’s internal emotions, which signifies why different people see art as different things. Every type of culture and era presents distinctive and unique characteristics. Different cultures all have different views of what art can, and would be, causing art itself to be universally renowned throughout the world. Art is one of the most intriguing and exiting forms of human expression. A picture can tell a thousand words and often stir up feelings inside the viewer. Art is all around us; buildings, electronic equipment like a computer, and even automobiles are all a form of art. Each one started out as an idea in someone’s head, and a design laid the basis for its creation. Many people only think of art as a sculpture...

...INTRODUCTION ART has not always been what we think it is today. An object regarded as Art today may not have been perceived as such when it was first made, nor was the person who made it necessarily regarded as an artist. Both the notion of "art" and the idea of the "artist" are relatively modern terms. Many of the objects we identify as art today -- Greek painted pottery, medieval manuscript illuminations, and so on -- were made in times and places when people had no concept of "art" as we understand the term. These objects may have been appreciated in various ways and often admired, but not as "art" in the current sense. ART lacks a satisfactory definition. It is easier to describe it as the way something is done -- "the use of skill and imagination in the creation of aesthetic objects, environments, or experiences that can be shared with others" (Britannica Online) -- rather than what it is. The idea of an object being a "work of art" emerges, together with the concept of the Artist, in the 15th and 16th centuries in Italy. During the Renaissance, the word Art emerges as a collective term encompassing Painting, Sculpture, and Architecture, a grouping given currency by the Italian artist and biographer Giorgio Vasari in the 16th century. Subsequently, this grouping was expanded to include Music and Poetry which became known in the 18th century as the 'Fine Arts'. These five Arts have formed an irreducible...

...Art is perceived very differently by people and a portrait could be interpreted in many different ways based on the perception of each individual, on how they feel and even the life they live in. Art is portrayed in a canvas, a sculpture, a portrait, ceramic and even glass. To me, you are able to express yourself, express a feeling and even a thought or idea through any form of art. There are many forms of art, for example, music, acting, painting, sketching, sculpting, dancing and reading. Art allows me to express my creativity and run with my ideas that are based on how I feel and what I think. What I notice about art are the colors used, the type of art type that it is done on, and the feelings and expressions that are portrayed. With art, you are able to see it the portraits and feel that the artist trying to portray. In other cases, art is tangible and you are able to feel it and feel what it was like to be there 100 years ago. What makes art so unique from other types of expression is that art is timeless and it is preserved for many decades. It expresses something that is very unique and special but at the same time it is greatly treasured. Any other type of expression fades with time such as clothing styles. With the clothing style, one day your in and the other day you are out. An expression of feeling also fades quickly and is not kept forever such as a tantrum. You might have a tantrum for 3 minutes but after that it is gone and forgotten. There might be other tantrums...

...What is Art? One man’s trash may be another man’s treasure, but does this same rule apply to art? Among other things, art entices beauty through visual appeal, depth, technique and intent, and as no one person is guaranteed to see the same things as another, this can make it difficult to discern what is art, and what is not. Art is personal, but what separates the average man’s stick figure from world-renowned works comes from the artist’s intent and technique, ultimately leaving a lasting impression on its viewers, and my definition. Art: A creation that through technique and intent leaves a lasting impression on its viewers. First of all, the artist must have intent, a vision, and not just a superficial vision, but one that strives to inspire viewers and prompt questions. This comes from inspiration, and the creator’s drive to create something more than just an “object”. The Piss Christ, for instance, prompted uproar due to its content. At first glance, the picture is visually appealing, but upon further evaluation, it would seem that Jesus Christ is engulfed in what would appear to be urine, prompting questions as to the intent of artist Andres Serrano. What was he trying to say by his depiction? Was it that he is associating religion, and the idea of Christ with urine? Or was it a pessimistic world view in that we are dishonoring Christ’s sacrifice, hence the urine? Without the creator’s own take own his creation, it would appear that both could be viable explanations...

...Perspective Paper 2 What is Art? ¬ Dutton believes art philosophy should change their approach by treating art as a field of activities, objects, and experiences that appears naturally in human life. It depends on identified patterns of intrinsic human behavior that is cross-culturally constant. Staniszewski explains that art not just made for thematic representation or an instrument for that moment in time. Modern art in today’s world encompasses psychological, social, and economic charged basis. She is aiming for a stronger understanding of canonical ideals and to dispel out of date mythology in art, culture, and modern subjectivity. The two authors have completely different perspectives in translating what is art. They also have different aims. Staniszewski describes how art in a modern context is created and given power in various institutions, where as Dutton believes the philosophy of art needs to find a different perspective, ‘by treating art as a field of activities, objects, and experience that appears naturally in human life (50).’ The authors’ opinions are sharp in contrast. Dutton stands with a humanistic perspective of art and Staniszewski reflects in terms of the institution. Dutton believes critics are stuck on defining specific concepts such as the readymade. Staniszewski describes our modern conventions of art made Marcel Duchamp’s Fountain a sculpture because its contextual input was given a voice by submitting it into an art exhibition, institutional...

...What is art? This question seems to be deemed simple, yet it is still left vaguely answered. Arthur Danto asserts that an object will be admitted to be art if it can be related to already acknowledged objects or by way of theoretical justification. Danto stated that an object considered as an art has properties or characteristics derived from an existent object. However, George Dickie states otherwise. Dickie states that artistic distinction can be conferred by anyone who can conceive of himself or herself as an agent of the art world and operates within the appropriate institutional contexts. In this situation, an object is considered as an art if a person being an agent of art or an artist deemed that that certain object is art, and then it shall be considered as an art. Indeed, there are many definitions as to what an art or how a certain object or thing becomes or is considered an art. Considering a certain object as an art relies on the person looking at it. With this in mind, art may vary depending on the culture, race, gender, personality, etc. or the person looking at it from his or her perspective. Given people's differences, an object is to be considered as an art depending on how the person looking at it perceives the object as such. For instance, a normal jewelry worn by women daily may be just a normal ornament for some, but this jewelry may considered by a certain person as art if that certain person sees that that jewelry is an art. With this in mind, art for a...

...ART Many people do not know the real meaning of art and how important it is. They think of it as a poster with an image that is colored, but art is much deeper than that. Art is when you express yourself or your feelings through your skills and imagination in visual medium such as painting or sculpture. It is not that easy to be an artist, there are many things that the artists should have. For example, imaginations, being able to draw, have a taste in colors etc. There are many artists that are well known to us these days even though they died many years ago, e.g. Pablo Picasso, Leonardo da Vinci, and Van Gogh. They became famous because of there high quality work that gave an affect on people when they saw the painting. In my opinion not all paintings are thought to be art because some of them do not make sense. Maybe the person who drew it understands what it meant but for me I don’t understand it. The painter should be straight forward when trying to tell the audience something in his painting. Putting many different pictures or shapes in a painting in a weird way makes the quality of it very low without any form of organization. A person before painting should organize his/her thoughts at first so when drawing he/she will have a goal that he/she want to show. The image above is one of my favorite paintings. It is called Leaf Album and it was painted by Chen Hongshou. I liked because it gave me the sense of sympathy and harmony. The colors of it are very soft and...

...Art has been a part of our life for as long as humanity has existed. For thousands of years people have been creating, looking at, criticizing, and enjoying art. I would like to address three questions: what is art, what is its purpose, and why has it survived for this long. First, what is art? Humanity has faced this question for many centuries. How can we distinguish between fine art and a beautiful poster? How can we call both Malevich’s “Black Square” and Da Vinci’s “La Joconde” art, yet not include some people’s paintings into this category? I believe that the only things that distinguish these works are the artist and the artist’s objective. The connection between what the artist means to achieve and what he achieves through the medium is what I believe classifies art. If what the artist meant to say is understood by at least one person in this world, when we can safely call that piece art. What classifies a masterpiece, however, is when not only one person understands what the artist was trying to say with the piece but when the majority does. Many people believe that the fine arts are elitist. Nevertheless, art is not something that you have to study to understand and enjoy. Art is something that captures the eye. Whether the artist is trying to communicate an emotion, an idea or something else, the most important thing is how well the audience receives it. However, art can also be shocking, something new. If a creative piece by an artist can spark the discussion of whether...

...What is Art? Let me start off by saying that I am not a huge fan of this question. Mostly because I feel that art itself is up for interpretation. Sort of how people say that “beauty Is in the eye of the beholder”. So I guess since I have to give Art a definition, I will say that I think art is a form of expression, that can be done in multiple mediums, not just visually but through sound as well. So while I consider a classic painting such as the Mona Lisa to be a work of art, I also consider the 1977 Self-titled debut of the Clash to be a work of art as well. Like I said before, I think that art is open to interpretation. Different people are going to have different reactions and take different things away from each piece of art that they see. From music, sculptures, vehicles, clothing, hair, architecture, landscaping, and so on, art is everywhere. I’m a Makeup Artist. I work 5 days a week selling cosmetics and applying products to hundreds of faces. Makeup isn’t a medium that the average person would even consider when they think of art, but I approach what I do just like any other artist. The face is my canvas, and I use different products and brushes to transform people and make masterpieces. I don’t really feel like I’m qualified to decide what isn’t considered art. Anyone can be considered an artist and label their forms of expression as works of art. I think works of art possess qualities that make people notice. They elicit a reaction in people, sometimes good, bad...

It is a true creative act that is used as a form of expression from the artist. Art is inspiring and can influence a society. Art work is seen through acting, music, and pictures. Firstly, one can see art through acting. Acting is a performance in which one disguises themselves and become a different individual. Acting is an expression of oneself. ...Art is any form of self-expression. Art is something that is created that entertains, inspires, educates or makes a person feel something good, bad or unexplainable. Art is whatever the artist does or makes in which they deem to be art whether it is of value or not. There is a wide variety of art, some that people wouldn’t imagine as art, but a true artist sees art in every creation. Art is everywhere and in everything I see. Art is not just a painting, poem, drawing or a ballet. When I think of art I think of something somebody does to release their feelings. Different people express art in various ways. For example, someone who writes a love letter because they are unable to express their feelings through touch or emotion. Is this art? Watching Michael Jordan drive down the court and slam the ball. He was recognized for his unique ways for a reason. So, is this art? Making music, any type of music whether it is appealing to your ears or not. Is this art? All of these things are art to me. Art does not have to be beautiful or make you feel good to be defined as art; it is an expression of emotion. We are all artists in my eyes because we are all able to feel and create. All of life is art to me. When I think about art, its creator and the meaning of the creation I think the content is more important then the context. I don’t necessarily need to understand when and why it was created to form my opinion on whether or not I enjoy it. I like to find my own meaning...

...Graves Art Essay 1 6-20-11 What makes Art Art? I believe art can not be defined. According to the Fall 2007 Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy, Definition of Art, by Thomas Adajan, "the definition of art is controversial... whether art can be defined has also been a matter of controversy." I think artists can take anything and put their twist on it and what they think it is and they can call it Art. Art is all around us in many forms and fashions. Art has evolved in so many different ways and can make people feel so many different feelings. Everywhere we look today we can see some form of Art and if you really take time to enjoy it and get in touch with your feelings everyone could learn to appreciate things a lot more. Art can be a very therapeutic way to deal with emotions people may not be able to express any other way. In the sculpture The Kiss by Auguste Rodin it is a true example of expressing a feeling of love. In the sculpture they look so passionate and in love it just makes you feel good. I think any work that touches us on an emotional level – brings us joy or anger, tears or laughter – is art. But there is a cultural aspect to it as well, particularly in how we interpret art. Georgia O’Keeffe says, “I found that I could say things with colors and shapes that I couldn’t say in any other way-things I had no words for.” I really think our book Prebles’ Artforms by Patrick Frank says it good when he says, “Not all of us regularly create works of art, but we...

...What does art mean to me? When I think of art, my culture is the first thing that comes to mind. I see our awesome designs, our baskets that hold g’ima:w (medicine) and prayers. I think of carving hazel sticks for our stick games. My people have been playing this game since the beginning of time. I think of our creation stories, and all of the pictures we have telling them. There is just so much that comes to mind, being that our whole essence is derived from art. As a Hupa tribal member, my whole life has been centered on art. From the way we dance to the way we make baskets. Art is the way we express our feelings, our surroundings, and our history. That is why we are so emotionally attached to our regalia. From when it‘s started to when it’s finished. Every single element stands for a prayer or medicine, so when the regalia is worn in ceremony, the prayers and medicine contribute to the dance. Then there are our stories, we use art to tell stories, and forever have recorded our history this way. Many cultures around the world use art to express emotions, record history, or to just enhance the communities. I consider myself an artist. I find art to be relaxing and it is one thing I am most comfortable with. It just comes naturally to me. If I could draw this paper on what I believe art to be, I could whip it out like nothing. It would look like a world full of prospects and it would symbolize everything I am trying to say in one picture, but unluckily, I have to use words...
