...Happiness The first person I decided to interview was my sister’s friend, Jared. He is 27 years old and has had what most would consider a hard life. The interview went as follows…. Me: What makes you happy in life? Jared: A loud 375 hp Trans am with the top down (chuckling), being with a good woman. Me: Would you consider yourself to be a happy person, why or why not? Jared: No, some things make me happy, but still struggle with inner demons and I think too much most of the time. Me: Do you think you will ever get past your inner demons and be happy again? Jared: Yea, just personal things I have to deal with, my personal demons cannot be fixed, they are in the past and you can’t always change the past. Me: What experiences have influenced your definition of happiness? Jared: No real experiences, it is just what I think happiness is. Me: Has your definition of happiness changed over time? Jared: Yes, ten years ago I was just happy to have another party to go to, but now I see it is more about being at peace with yourself. Me: Do you expect the definition to change again? ...study, we did not hold any explicit hypothesis for any sort of specific outcome. However, there has been previous studies and research that have concluded that there is a preference for experiential purchases over material purchases among different samples of the population. These studies have concluded that the main reason behind these findings is that people tend to feel happier from their life experience purchases rather than material goods purchases. They conclude that an experience can create long lasting happiness as opposed to a material good that tends to result in shrinking happiness as time goes by. Another reason is that material goods tend to diminish a person’s happiness when compared to other similar goods not owned by that person. Given the results for these previous studies and research, we are inclined to believe that the outcome of our own study will obtain similar results. Research Question The research question for this study was formulated as follows: What kind of consumption (experiences vs material goods) is preferred by college students...

...The Happiness Machine How Google became such a great place to work. By Farhad Manjoo A few years ago, Google’s human resources department noticed a problem: A lot of women were leaving the company. Like the majority of Silicon Valley software firms, Google is staffed mostly by men, and executives have long made it a priority to increase the number of female employees. But the fact that women were leaving Google wasn’t just a gender equity problem—it was affecting the bottom line. Unlike in most sectors of the economy, the market for top-notch tech employees is stretched incredibly thin. Google fights for potential workers with Apple, Facebook, Amazon, Microsoft, and hordes of startups, so every employee’s departure triggers a costly, time-consuming recruiting process. Then there was the happiness problem. Google monitors its employees’ well-being to a degree that can seem absurd to those who work outside Mountain View. The attrition rate among women suggested there might be something amiss in the company’s happiness machine. And if there’s any sign that joy among Googlers is on the wane, it’s the Google HR department’s mission to figure out why and how to fix it. Google calls its HR department People Operations, though most people in the firm shorten it to POPS. The group is headed by Laszlo Bock, a trim, soft-spoken 40-year-old who came to Google six years ago. Bock says that when POPS looked into Google’s woman problem, it found it was really a new mother...

...the landscape that they deserve an in depth look. E-commerce has become such a huge piece of the life we live today in the 21st century. From Google to Amazon, Wayfair to Overstock, buying and selling on the internet has become as much of our shopping experience as walking the local shopping mall or more. Even the traditional brick and mortar stores from Wal-Mart to JcPenney have renewed their focus to the selling of merchandise online. Though online retail has taken its place in our culture as much as physical store fronts, it still presents the same challenges that traditional retail stores have faced for the last 100-plus years. How do you guarantee the best customer service experience for your customers? How do you ensure employee happiness is at its most optimal level throughout the company? How do you retain market share, while optimizing stakeholder value and customer satisfaction? Most retail companies, online or not, face these issues when building a successful organization. Companies are constantly searching for the right formula for their business to correctly answer all of these questions. One online retailer has taken an innovative approach to the many financial and ethical obstacles facing many...

...the film. Citizen Kane is considered by many critics to be one of the best films of all time mainly because it was so innovative at the time. The film is often praised for its cinematography, sound, and narrative structure. I personally did not love the film because I found it to be a bit boring at times. It felt more like a biography of Kane’s life and not much more. I kept waiting for “it” to happen but no monumental or memorable event really ever occurred. The film begins with Charles Foster Kane on his deathbed as he whispers his last word “rosebud”, before dropping his globe and it shattering everywhere. The rest of the film is essentially a chase by a reporter named Jerry Thompson as he tries to find out what Kane meant by “rosebud”. Through a series of interviews that Thompson conducts, we get an in-depth look at Thompson’s life through flashbacks in the perspective of many people who knew him and were close to him. The setup of the movie was something I did enjoy. The film began at the end of Kane’s life and then progresses through flashbacks. I always find it interesting when movies are set up that way because traditionally a film has a conclusion at the end of a film while Citizen Kane showed us Kane’s fate right away. This film was one of the first to implement a storyline in this manner. Kane’s story unfolds in overlapping segments by different narrators who add information to Kane’s life. Another interesting aspect of the film is that every narrator may have a biased...

...The Greek philosopher Aristippus (435–356 B.C.E.) declared happiness to be the Sum total of pleasures experienced during one’s lifetime. (Pearson Education, 2009) The first person I interviewed was a neighbor I never met and there name is Shirley. I started the interview with the question “what is your definition of happiness?” Her reply was happiness is being happy with yourself and waking up every day, and feeling good as well as personal appearance. The second question was has your definition of happiness changed overtime? The answer was yes; due to experiences overtime has caused change in my view of happiness. From teen to adult it was a big change in my view of happiness because there was a pressure to have a boyfriend in teen years and when adult hood came it was all about marriage. In my teen years I was a loner, so it was more pressure to get married. I asked her what experiences have influenced your definition. She replies with; I would like to start with marriage. Putting your trust in a person and they turn around and stab you in the back. After all the disappointment and lies I’m alone because of it. I asked do you think your definition will change. Absolutely; it will change so many years as long as I’m alive. The next question was what makes you happy? Lots of things, surviving in life, waking up every day, paying bills and a little me time. Family that’s close and shows love and being caring and giving makes me happy, because that just makes me happy helping others...
