Jim’s relationship with Antonia involves him finding his way back to a placed state by connecting to her personality which he consistently finds solace in. Jim in the passage is meeting Antonia after twenty years. He is incredibly anxious of the fact that the changes he will inevitably see in her will translate to a change in her character. He dreads losing the fond memory he has of who she is to him and does not want to see her “aged and broken”(159). Initially he sees her he recognizes the physical changes in appearance. Her skin “brown and hardened”(163) and a couple of her teeth lost. At the begining of the book, Jim doesn't care for people who are not from his own country. At the end of the book, he ends up appreiating and learning what makes Antonia and people like her succesful.
