Based on my research and the media sources I analyzed, there is definitely more liberal bias in the media as opposed to conservative bias. One who is liberal is open minded and welcoming to new ideas that contradict the traditional conservative. This argument has been debated for decades and studies along with media critics suggest that liberal bias is most common in the mainstream media. There is a clear lean towards the left in some of the most well-known media outlets such as CNN, The New York Times and NBC, just to identify a few. The majority of the journalist for these media outlets have liberal values which translate into how the news coverage is broadcast to the public. This can be seen in the topics discussed in these news articles such as presidential debates, gay marriage, and abortion. …show more content…
Abortion is not viewed as murder for liberals because the unborn fetus is not a human life until the mother decides that she wants to carry out her pregnancy and deliver her baby. This is controversial with conservative beliefs that consider abortion murder because they feel as though life begins the moment the fetus in conceived. As I analyzed Planned Parenthood’s campaign to end the labels of pro-choice and pro-life, it was clear that there was a liberal bias in their video ad. The ad seeks to end the idea of abortion being a black and white topic of conversation and to inform the public of all the other factors that should be taken into consideration when a woman is contemplating an abortion. The ad views abortion as simply another medical service that woman should be entitled to without the interference of the government. Planned Parenthood categorized abortion in the same medical services as a mammogram, receiving prenatal care and cancer

New Media Political Bias

...National News Media are Largely Liberal in Political Bias 11/21/2011 Abstract The media provides the American people with information. This information is used by the citizens to make decisions and often to take actions. Because the media is the source of information for most American citizens, it is important to understand the techniques media outlets use in an attempt to bias their audience. The most common techniques that attempt to bend the public to a given point of view are use of statistics and counts, tone and diction, and more frequently, omission. National News Media are Largely Liberal in Political Bias During the 2008 presidential election Barack Obama received more than twice the media coverage than John McCain. It is doubtful that anyone that was aware there was an election going on would need surveys to confirm that statement. Obama got more attention than McCain because Obama was the “rock star” of politics and McCain was just another politician, At that time Obama represented fresh and new and that was what mattered especially to the younger groups (Page, A Big Story is our Biggest Bias, 2008). But being star struck does not explain the media bias that has existed for a very long time. Very few people, including the media members and journalists will argue that the national news media are not biased. Despite the journalistic ideal of “objectivity,” every news story is influenced by...

Media Bias Issues

...Media bias is studied at schools of journalism, university departments (including Media studies, Cultural studies and Peace studies) and by independent watchdog groups from various parts of the political spectrum. In the United States, many of these studies focus on issues of a conservative/liberal balance in the media. Other focuses include international differences in reporting, as well as bias in reporting of particular issues such as economic class or environmental interests. One high profile academic survey of American journalists is The Media Elite. The survey found that most journalists were liberal Democratic voters.[citation needed] Martin Harrison's TV News: Whose Bias? (1985) criticized the methodology of the Glasgow Media Group, arguing that the GMG identified bias selectively, via their own preconceptions about what phrases qualify as biased descriptions. For example, the GMG sees the word "idle" to describe striking workers as pejorative, despite the word being used by strikers themselves.[4] Herman and Chomsky (1988) proposed a propaganda model hypothesizing systematic biases of U.S. media from structural economic causes. They hypothesize media ownership by corporations, funding from advertising, the use of official sources, efforts to discredit independent media ("flak"), and "anti-communist" ideology as the filters that bias news in favor of U.S. corporate interests. Many of the positions in the preceding study are supported by a 2002 study by Jim A. Kuypers:...

Liberal Media

...affirmative that mainstream media does have a liberal, leftist bias. This media which includes major traditional mainstream news networks and newspapers have had a long standing liberal bias. In the video that was viewed in class, which was made in 2001 the author Justin Lewis was even claiming that the media had been very heavy left bias in the years past. It has only continued to increase for the liberal bias throughout the years. This can be seen by not only the coverage, but also by the past publicly expressed of political opinions of most major reporters, anchors, producers, etc. The dictionary defines a liberal as a political or social philosophy advocating the freedom of the individual, parliamentary systems of government, nonviolent modification of political, social, or economic institutions to assure unrestricted development in all spheres of human endeavor, and governmental guarantees of individual rights and civil liberties. It also defines a leftist as an outlook or specific position that accepts or supports social equality, often in opposition to social hierarchy and social inequality. It usually involves a concern for those in society who are disadvantaged relative to others and an assumption that there are unjustified inequalities, which right-wing politics views as natural or traditional that needs to be reduced or abolished. In this paper I will affirm the argument that is made by Mr. Lewis in favor for a liberal media. In the beginning of the video Lewis shows...

Liberals are considered to believe that the government is in charge of making sure that everyone lives equally and happy. Conservatives are considered to believe that the government should be limited, and that everyone is personally responsible for themselves and their happiness. Media Bias

...Media Bias and how it affects our country negatively English 112 Spring The biases the media has are bigger than conservative or liberal. They are all about getting ratings, making money and about doing stories that are easy to cover. This may seem like a trite statement but it hold enormous amount of truth. As Americans, we trust what reporters write in the newspaper, and say on television and radio stations. We expect them to report the truth. However, current media outlets distort stories and certain new reports are getting too much attention. The most important stories are never seen on television or read in the newspaper, or heard on the radio stations, while minor and trivial stories get the most coverage. Hence celebrity engagements, divorce, entrance to rehab centers and DUI cases that are sold to the media. Americans are then left without valuable information contrary to what story is getting 24- hour news coverage. Media bias is a term used to describe prejudice in news and media reports, in which is perceived as an imbalance or unfair presentation of facts or selective reporting of which events or facts reported. The main point here is when biases in media distorts certain stories, and other stories are spoken about entirely too much it hurts the democracy in America. The media, in that case, fails to focus on real issues that underlie the American culture, it has one-sided opinions, favoring a liberal’s point of view, and it caters to the majority...

Media Bias Analysis

...In today’s society, individuals are constantly surrounded by the media, regardless of what it is in relation to. Despite the fact that there are a variety of various media sources, it is commonly agreed upon that the media is biased; however, the opinion of how it is biased is often based on the leanings and beliefs of individuals rather than everyone as a whole. The most common bias discussed seems to be that of ideological bias, more specifically whether the media is more conservative or liberal in its coverage. While there are undoubtedly sources, such as Fox News, that tend to be conservatively biased, it seems that the vast majority of the media today is liberally biased. The media is ideologically biased in favor of liberal coverage in...

Bias: The Role Of Liberal Bias In The Media

...It has always been said that there is bias in the media. This essay will focus on one type of bias; that in article headlines. To start we have Article 1, and two different sites that both offer headlines. The first headline reads, "Obama Bureaucrats Imposing Radical Homosexual Sensitivity Training", from Fox Nation, a branch of Fox News, a news source that is widely considered to be radically conservative. The second headline, on the same issue, reads, "USDA gay-sensitivity training seeks larger audience", from The Washington Times, another conservative news outlet, yet generally considered less radical than Fox News. These two headlines are both meant to lead readers to read on and find out more, but as seen in the Fox Nation headline, crass language is used to gather attention, with media buzzwords like 'radical' and 'imposing'. These words have a negative connotation and therefore the reader goes into the article with a negative mindset. If the reader was to click on this article, they would soon see that the article is just as negative as the headline. The very short article, mentions that activists compare heterosexism (the belief...

I believe before we can go directly into how the media biased, we must first know what it means. Media bias is a political bias in journalistic reporting, in programming selection, or in mass communications media. In today’s society, it has become normal to witness or read about an elected government official being ridiculed by our mainstream media outlets. You can rarely turn on the news, check your phone, or get on Facebook and Twitter without some sort of recent false and often miss represented news article or headline. ...same thing, but they have different implications and evoke a different tone. Which term a news outlet uses may show where the bias lies. Some news outlets may avoid certain words altogether: BBC, for example, refrains from designating someone as a “terrorist” because it contains “political overtones” (“Terrorism”). BBC is a British news source but it widely used and trusted by Americans and it is worth noting. American news sources can be much more toxic in the words they use. It has long been an argument from conservatives that the media are “politically correct” and refrain from telling the whole truth by using euphemisms (Weigel). Journalists are not supposed to let their opinions get in the way of the news they are reporting, but the words they use, or refrain from using, can hide the unfeigned, unfiltered truth from the public. Take, for instance, the Fox News article “Seven Highlights from Bombshell IG Report on the DOJ, FBI Clinton Email Probe.” The article is blatantly biased towards conservatives- even the title, calling supposedly incriminating evidence in the case regarding Hillary Clinton’s Emails a “Bombshell” (Re). The article claims that those being investigated had “escaped...
