What Is Mercy's Story?

Mercy is not one story, but multiple, sometimes contradictory, interlocking stories. Characters tell stories to make sense of their lives, and these stories have tremendous power for both good and evil. Lina’s stories, in particular, stand out for their affirmative power. First and foremost, she tells Mercy’s story, and though she questions the accuracy and meaning of her version, to some degree her attention and care redeem the ugliness of Mercy’s life. (56)
According to David Machin, when the adults hope that the baby dies, they attempt to rewrite this story as a hopeful one. They are proud to say that circumstances have given them a chance to be the saviours. She resists the premise of white superiority, writing her own story about the beauty …show more content…
The psychological problems faced by individuals need to be grounded in the socio-communal context. The disintegration of psychology and surrender to deviant taste are major events ruinous to the health of individuals. Gibaldi points out the following views:
Lina believes that this mark of conventional, white beauty will change the way that she is seen and therefore the way that she sees the world. There are continual references to other characters’ eyes as well—for example, they reside in the blankness in their eyes, as well as in his inability to see a black girl. This motif underlines the novel’s repeated concern for the difference between how we see and how we are seen, and the difference between superficial sight and true insight. (71) The level of obsession faced by Lina and Florence is rooted in the phenomenon which has happened in the Afro-American community. Thus it can be said without a moment’s delay that the problem faced by Lina is not the individual problem but the problem that has arisen in the society of Black people. The growing hierarchy amidst the Black people of Afro-American community has exerted pressures on the psychology of an

...Essay 2 Comparison of Bessie Head’s “The Deep River: A Story of Ancient Tribal Migration” and “Two Sisters by Ama Ata Aidoo’s I have chosen “Two Sisters” and “The Deep River” for comparison of power relationships between men and women. The men in these stories are powerful but in the end we will find out that the women find their inner power to get what that want. “Two Sisters” by Ama Ata Aidoo is a story that shows how the males are privileged in the way it is practiced in much of post-colonial Africa. Men who are financially successful use their power or buying power to have their way with any of the women they desire. This is a common theme written by African women. “Two Sisters” gives us two views because it is told from two perspectives. Connie the eldest sister believes that Mercy, the younger sister is ruining her life because of the many affairs with older, powerful men. Connie is married but her husband James is open about his affairs and numerous mistresses. This shows that not only financially successful men but all men render women powerless in the African society. Mercy acts in ways that bring benefits to others. The story helps us understand that her office job is equivalent to a taxi cab driver. She is paid very low wages. She sees Mensar-Arthur as an option to help her out of this situation. Connie’s husband James sides with Mercy, he thinks it is okay for her to continue with the affairs. Bessie Head is a bi-racial woman who eventually moved...

...learning activity. Though some proofreading, format, APA glitches, and missed expectations (e.g., body of paper was 15 pages vs. 14 page expectation) were present, this sample did satisfactorily organize cumulative work with a noticeably fresh synthesis of a solution-based, short-term pastoral counseling scenario. In like fashion, make every effort to do original work!] Abstract The Final Project applies the distinctive features of a solution-based, short-term pastoral counseling strategy to a counseling scenario with a pre-determined care-seeker, Brody, from the case study Crossroads: A Story of Forgiveness. It is the purpose of this writer to artificially move Brody through an abridged counseling process. The student counselor, Mercy Me, is the youth minister of an American Baptist Church with approximately 150 active members located in the close-knit, small community of Shingle Hollow, NC. Mercy’s hallmark purpose, glorifying God by being and imitator of Christ, guides, directs, and develops the process of tailoring her I/S DISC relational style to best demonstrate fit and build rapport with Brody’s C/S DISC relational style. The solution-based, short-term pastoral counseling strategy is utilized to move Brody from an attending position in phase one to a willing position in phase two. The counselor recognizes Brody’s grief and depression as a result of the tragic loss of his mother and sister. Making matters worse, the noticeable anger presents from a hostile, tension filled relationship...

Wuthering Heights Chapter I 1801. - I have just returned from a visit to my landlord - the solitary neighbour that I shall be troubled with. This is certainly a beautiful country! In all England, I do not believe that I could have fixed on a situation so completely removed from the stir of society. A perfect misanthropist’s heaven: and Mr. Heathcliff and I are such a suitable pair to divide the desolation between us. A capital fellow! He little imagined how my heart warmed towards him when I beheld his black eyes withdraw so suspiciously under their brows, as I rode up, and when his fingers sheltered themselves, with a jealous resolution, still further in his waistcoat, as I announced my name. ’Mr. Heathcliff?’ I said. A nod was the answer. ’Mr. Lockwood, your new tenant, sir. I do myself the honour of calling as soon as possible after my arrival, to express the hope that I have not inconvenienced you by my perseverance in soliciting the occupation of Thrushcross Grange: I heard yesterday you had had some thoughts - ‘ 2 of 540 Wuthering Heights ’Thrushcross Grange is my own, sir,’ he interrupted, wincing. ‘I should not allow any one to inconvenience me, if I could hinder it - walk in!’ The ‘walk in’ was uttered with closed teeth, and expressed the sentiment, ‘Go to the Deuce:’ even the gate over which he...

Alexandre Dumas The Three Musketeers by Alexandre Dumas [Pere] AUTHOR’S PREFACE IN WHICH IT IS PROVED that, notwithstanding their names’ ending in os and is, the heroes of the story which we are about to have the honor to relate to our readers have nothing mythological about them. A short time ago, while making researches in the Royal Library for my History of Louis XIV, I stumbled by chance upon the Memoirs of M. D’Artagnan, printed—as were most of the works of that period, in which authors could not tell the truth without the risk of a residence, more or less long, in the Bastille—at Amsterdam, by Pierre Rouge. The title 3 attracted me; I took them home with me, with the...
