Obesity in America Even with an abundance of evidence of the benefits of sustaining a healthy weight and a physically active lifestyle, we continue to eat greater portion sizes than we need and remain less physically active than we should be. Many Americans are fatter than medical science recommends, and weights are still growing. While many other countries have experienced significant increases in obesity, no other developed country is quite as overweight as the United States. Obesity is referred to a person who is overweight; medically based on the ranges of weight that is higher than what is typically considered for their appropriate height to be healthy. Many causes contribute to obesity; such as social, environmental, economic, genetic factors, behavior, and individual level (CDC, 2012). Eating a diet high in fats can lead to many health risks. Fast food does not provide the necessary minerals and vitamins bodies need to develop properly. An adolescent with an underactive thyroid often is apparent, because of failure to develop normally. They can display poor concentration, muscle pain or weakness, constant constipation, fatigue or difficulty learning. Fast food has become a part of so many adolescents lives in the U.S. Our ancestors, who had to gather and hunt for their meals, ate a diet rich in low-fat meats and grains. However, for us, with drive-through restaurants and grocery stores jam-packed junk food aisles, make unhealthy eating readily available and hassle free. This is also a very important case for children. About a quarter of 2 to 5 year olds are obese in America. Obesity is when your weight is 20% more than average weight, compared to your height. This can be called a disease. “Heart stroke, high blood pressure, diabetes and different types of cancer can all be caused by just being obese” (“Obesity”).
