What is Protein?
The Center for Disease Control and Prevention help describe proteins as “part of every cell, tissue and organ in our body that are constantly being broken and replaced. The protein in the foods we eat is digested into amino acids that are later used to replace the proteins in our bodies with two types of proteins contributing to our digestion and overall function; the two types of protein are complete and incomplete proteins. (CDC, paragraph 4)
A person’s best source of healthy proteins come from your complete proteins sources or your meats, poultry, fish, milk or eggs, each containing high qualities of amino acids in which our bodies do not produce on their own, and finding them in other outside healthy sources helps our bodies digest and function properly. (CDC, paragraph 6)
Now incomplete proteins are not bad for you, they just lack the high amounts of amino acids that our bodies need, items such as white rice, corn, tofu products and dried beans all have amino acids yes, but not enough to help the body unless combined with each other or others that maintain the same low amounts of amino acids.
As adults we tend to need more daily protein than some children do, even males over females in all age groups are in a higher need of proteins, with the average female between ages 19-70+ needs about forty-six grams of daily protein, were as a male in the same age group of 19-70+ needs about fifty-six grams of daily protein and children average by age from 13grams to pre-teens needing 34 grams in a daily balanced diet and not exceeding much more then recommended to protect yourself from harm of over protein diets.
With that being said, what happens when a person consumes either too much protein or not enough protein? Many different types of situation can come into play when you over consume too much protein, for instance, osteoporosis is a top high risk of a high-protein diet. Osteoporosis is lack of bone density or bone loss, and high proteins diets tend to have your body process more calcium to compensate, therefore extracting the needed calcium from your bones making your bones less dense than before. Another risk of high protein diets or over consumption of proteins is its contribution in damage to the internal organs. Fit Day article on “5 Negative High Protein Diet Effects” states that, your body needs carbohydrates to make energy, when you deprive you body of carbohydrates it’s forced to bun body and dietary fat and protein to make energy instead. When you boy begins to burn large amounts of body fat, ketones can accumulate in the body. When dangerous levels of ketones accumulate in the body, the dieter could succumb to a diabetic coma, which could turn deadly if no immediate treatment is sought after.
There are many benefits to a high-protein diet, but there are also much more disadvantages to one as well. Our bodies cannot function without proteins and the amino acids that is provides our bodies during digestion, just getting a well balanced amount of proteins and making sure that the proteins we eat are healthy for us rather than incomplete proteins that do not offer us enough unless consumed with more like products.
