The Martian is an exciting book of survival and witty thinking on Mars. Mark Watney, a botanist and mechanic, is one of six people to go on a mission to Mars. Mark’s team has to leave the planet during a dust storm, and an antenna breaks loose and punctures his spacesuit. Thus begins Mark’s struggle to survive, and to have a good time of it, too. The Martian by Andy Weir has lots of sarcasm and humor in it, as well as complicated math for Mark to complete to figure out how to survive.
Andy Weir, the author of The Martian, had an interesting life before he wrote his first novel. Andy Weir was first hired as a programmer at a national laboratory at age fifteen. He worked for several software companies, and he even helped design computer games. One of Weir’s favorite books was Tunnel in the Sky by Robert Heinlein. Andy Weir had a quite exciting life before writing The Martian, and has liked science fiction the whole time, which means that The Martian is just that much better of a book. …show more content…
The Martian has lots of humor and sarcasm, such as, “If ruining the only religious icon I have leaves me vulnerable to Martain vampires, I’ll have to risk it”(Weir 33). In this quote Mark is trying to light a small wooden cross on fire to separate the gasses in the air, which will allow him to create water. Another example of sarcastic humor from The Martian is, ”If by ‘detachment’ you mean ‘shot out like a cannon,’ then yeah,” (Weir 172). This is when Mark has been blown out of his home on Mars while in the airlock, and is surprisingly calm when describing what happened.
