To what extent do you believe this to be the case in the play ‘Much Ado About Nothing’? ‘Much Ado About Nothing’ contains comedy throughout but it could be argued that seriousness is present in equal measure. They are portrayed simultaneously by Shakespeare in his play: where one scene is comedic to one part of the audience, seriousness could be interpreted by others. The writer uses comedy not only to entertain but to portray and challenge concepts of gender, class and other norms dominant in Shakespearean times but also remain evident in contemporary society. He also uses a leading male and female character to construct this gender challenge, with a woman who will not marry until ‘God make men of some other metal than earth’ and a man she refers to as ‘no less than a stuffed man’. The forwardness with these lines are delivered in contrast with the passive expectations an Elizabethan audience would expect from the leading female, however comedy remains as the moment is unexpected. Furthermore, class and status issues can be identified in the play, an obvious example being the Prince’s brother a ‘bastard’, marginalised from society because of who he is, and a ‘watchman’ who is described as an ‘ass’. ...Cases These are the most important materials on which to focus your attention. They are not written to “speed-read”; in fact, you need to read them very carefully. A case is not a story, but rather a description of a situation in which an actual decision-maker faced some difficult choices. Your task is to put yourself into that situation and decide what you would do. Most of the cases will be outside your realm of industry experience, so you will need the background information to get familiar enough with the situation to feel ready to make decisions. As you have likely observed after reading the book on Learning with Cases, cases are written so that you get a pretty good idea of what your task is in the first paragraph or two of the case and then again in the last paragraph or two. I always read those first and I suggest you do too – just to see what the case is about. Then I suggest you look through the case quickly to see what kind of information is available to you – by quickly I mean a 5 minute scan of the whole thing. By this point you should know what faces you; for example, a decision about whether to enter a new market or whether to give a bank loan, etc. The next step I suggest is to read the case thoroughly. In a meeting in Stockholm recently, I was asked to explain what it takes to write a teaching case. I gave my opinion, we had a very interesting discussion. Here is my (very rough and off the cuff) opinion about what it takes (in reality, how a teaching case differs from a research case). Why are you writing this case? Cases are written for a teaching purpose – and to write a teaching case, you need to have a teaching objective in mind. It is not enough to have an interesting company. Even the best company story needs to have a pedagogical point, a theory or dilemma to illustrate. So don’t write a teaching case just because you happen to know someone in a really interesting company – it does need to be a good story, but it also need to have a purpose. The standard outline Cases – particularly the standard HBS case – follow an outline that can seem rather trite, but which is very effective. It is something like this: 0.5 page: Intro: The protagonist is introduced, typically pondering a question of some importance.
