What Kind of Thinker Are You?

Can you come up with the correct answer or solution? In this course ( HUM/111- Critical and Creative Thinking) will help you. Since I started this course in December 2012, nine weeks ago this course has helped me become a critical thinker. I have learned what is critical thinking, I can tell you the most significant things I learned about critical thinking and how my critical thinking has changed since this course, and I can reevaluate my stage of development in critical thinking, explain to you why this change has occurred, and how I plan to move from stage five: Advanced thinking to stage 6: Master Thinking.

First week we learned, what is critical thinking? Critical thinking is a mental process of reviewing clear, rational thoughts based on evidence to reach an answer or conclusion. Critical thinking helps you distinguish between fact and opinion, ask questions, make detailed observations, uncover assumptions and define their terms and make assertions based on sound logic and solid evidence.

Next thing, I can tell you the most significant things I have learned about critical thinking and how my critical thinking has changed since this course. The most significant things that I have learned about critical thinking, that critical thinking is based on concepts and principles, not on hard and fast, or step- by- step procedures. Critical thinking does not assure that one will reach either the truth or correct conclusions. Critical thinking is hard intellectual work. Critical thinking is an intellectual skill that can be learned and improved. All reasoning, thinking, learning: starts and progresses with questions and a need to understand, occurs within points of views, and frames of reference, proceeds from some goals and objectives, has an informational base; uses data/information that must be interpreted and this

...it and the further conclusions to which it tends. (Dewey, 1909) Cassandra L. Hamel Cassandra L. Hamel My Personal Reflection HUM/114 University of Phoenix Maya Chapman October 22, 2012 My Personal Reflection HUM/114 University of Phoenix Maya Chapman October 22, 2012 There are many ways to describe critical thinking her are some of the ways some of the great thinkers of the past describe it, "For myself, I found that I was fitted for nothing so well as for the study of Truth; as having a mind nimble and versatile enough to catch the resemblances of things... and at the same time steady enough to fix and distinguish their subtler differences; as being gifted by nature with desire to seek, patience to doubt, fondness to meditate, slowness to assert, readiness to consider, carefulness to dispose and set in order; and as being a man that neither affects what is new nor admires what is old, and that hates every kind of imposture."(Sir Francis Bacon). "Critical thinking is the examination and test of propositions of any kind which are offered for acceptance, in order to find out whether they correspond to reality or not. The critical faculty is a product of education and training. It is a mental habit and power. It is a prime condition of human welfare that men and women should be trained in it. It is our only guarantee against delusion, deception, superstition, and misapprehension of ourselves and our earthly circumstances."(William...

...pronouncing the guilt or innocence of a young man accused of patricide. The extraordinary element is that their finding will determine his life or death. This work will explore some elements of critical thinking and creative thinking found within the context of this remarkable movie. Critical thinking involves the use of a group of interconnected skills to analyze, creatively integrate, and evaluate what you read and hear. To become a critical thinker you must be able to decide whether an author’s opinions are true or false, whether he or she has adequately defended those ideas, whether certain recommendations are practical, as well as whether particular solutions will be effective. The characteristics of that kind of thinking are: Knowledge, Comprehension, Application, Analysis, Synthesis, and Evaluation. Within that movie, there were three points raised in the trial that juror #8 believed argument analysis: 1- The knife that was the murder weapon was unique and the boy was seen with it, although he said he had lost it. 2- The old man gave evidence that he heard the boy say “I’ll kill you” from his apartment below and he saw the boy running from the down stairs of the apartment after rising from bedroom. 3- That the old lady saw the boy kill his father through her window, while a train was passing. Critical Thinking: What It Is and Why It Counts

...Critical Thinking: What It Is and Why It Counts Peter A. Facione The late George Carlin worked “critical thinking” into one of his comedic monologue rants on the perils of trusting our lives and fortunes to the decision-making of people who were gullible, uninformed, and unreflective. Had he lived to experience the economic collapse of 2008 and 2009, he would have surely added more to his caustic but accurate assessments regarding how failing to anticipate the consequences of one’s decisions often leads to disastrous results not only for the decision maker, but for many other people as well. After years of viewing higher education as more of a private good which benefits only the student, we are again beginning to appreciate higher education as being also a public good which benefits society. Is it not a wiser social policy to invest in the education of the future workforce, rather than to suffer the financial costs and endure the fiscal and social burdens associated with economic weakness, public health problems, crime, and avoidable poverty? Perhaps that realization, along with its obvious advantages for high level strategic decision making, is what lead the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff to comment on critical thinking in his commencement address to a graduating class of military officers. Communication & Collaborating

...learning styles. It is a simple quiz to find out what your way of communicating and collaborating is. You will discover what it is you like most and what it is you like least. You will be amazed in what you may find out about yourself; that is if you already did not know. Taking the pathways to learning assessment and the personality spectrum was a great experience for me. It helped me recognize just a little bit more about myself. Through these two assessments I have discovered my way of learning which I had no idea of before. It was found that I was an intrapersonal and musical type of person. Also I discovered my personality was more than one. I learned that I was a thinker, organizer and a giver. The results were stunning to me because I never considered myself to be an organizer, however I knew that I was a giver and thinker, it has always been my nature. Learning Styles There are several types of learning styles that fits each individual. A learning style is just the way your brain takes in information for you to remember. Everyone has their own way of learning. Some of these learning styles are: Intrapersonal, interpersonal and musical. Each one of these styles is a unique intelligence. Someone who is interpersonal has the ability to relate to other persons feelings and emotions. These types of people can sense if someone is in a good mood or just having a bad day. This is an advantage to them because they would know what to say at all times according to the situation...

Aristotle was fascinated by the intellectual challenge of forming categories and breaking down forms of knowledge whether it were in writing or being performed in a play. Plato would elaborate on the central concern of love between men and gods, the proper kind of love that must be maintained to attempt to cure the kind of love that is dead (Plato pg. 880). Critical Thinking

...create new perspectives. When evaluating the claims presented by a source in an academic essay, a critical and reflective thinker does not simply accept arguments as ‘fact’. Nor do they create arguments based on innuendo and bias. This essay will contend that for students at university level to be taken seriously they must use critical and reflective thinking to write an effective academic essay. The following points will be addressed; what constitutes a credible essay, what is critical thinking and reflective practice, what is the importance of these skills in developing arguments, the benefits of thinking critically and reflectively, the use of critical reflective thinking in evaluating sources and the importance of recognizing those sources correctly for the work to be considered credible. So what constitutes a credible essay? The purpose of the essay is to forward knowledge, to tackle an already existing argument and build on it using sound evidence and research. “Essays are a document of your learning; they show proof of your understanding of the topic and your ability to communicate that understanding convincingly” (Germov 2011, 2). An essay must put forth an argument then break it down to prove or disprove the thesis. The statement needs to be dissected and the main points need to be analysed. What are the key concepts, what needs to be defined and what sources will be included? The essay writing process is an involved one and begins well before a word of it has even been...

Thinker, Intuitor, Feeler, Senser

...Paper 1: Application 1 Thinker, Intuitor, Feeler, Senser As a manager it is important that you are aware of the different personality types people have. The main personality types are the Thinker, The Intuitor, the Feeler and The Senser. It is essential that you know how to communicate with these different types of people. Recognizing and knowing your own personality type is key for adjusting your own style. This way you can maximize communication with your employees so they can successfully manage their departments. A few examples will be given for each type. The Thinker is someone who likes to organize and gather information. They value logic, objectivity and systematic inquiry. He or she will always stand firm and convince others through reason. They often want to be seen as perfect and have very high internal standards. If they would make a mistake, they would be evenly embarrassed as someone else but they would never show it. My dad is a good example of a thinker. When my sister and me asked our parents if we could go to this amusement park they were fine with it. Before we even started to think of a date my father wanted us to make a complete list of every hotel and possible restaurants we could go to. He wanted us to make a time schedule for each day we stayed there and what means of transportation there were. He wanted to know every little detail before he could make a definite decision. Reflective Log Tips

...Tips for Writing a Reflective Learning Log for an Assignment What is a reflective log? This kind of log is a record of your learning experiences, thoughts, feelings and reflections. It is not just a diary of what you have done, but a critical assessment of how you have progressed. It is less formal than other kinds of assignments - for example you should write in the first person. To be truly reflective you need to ask yourself some questions: • • • • • • What have I achieved? Have I made progress? Have I developed new skills? How might I use these skills in the future (at university or in the workplace)? How have I changed my learning style? What would happen if I continued to practice this new skill? Think about the last assignment you did.... • • • • • Were you satisfied with the result? How could you improve the process of planning, research or writing? How could you improve your marks? What new things did you try? How did you overcome any difficulties? The advantages of being a reflective learner Students who successfully keep learning logs often notice changes associated with reflection Accepting becomes questioning Information for this handout and presentation was taken from: Pulman, A.
