...submitted as a Learning Team assignment. White cap: What pieces of information are needed to assist the family in making a decision regarding Marianne’s care? In this situation the family is at odds on what to do about Marianne. The husband wants to do everything possible to keep her alive, whereas the children think that surgery shouldn’t be an option because even if she was to make it through the surgery, there is no guarantee that she will be functional. Since Marianne doesn’t have an advanced directive, the family needs to know what all of their options are and the outcomes of each option. For example, the types of surgeries that can be done and the probability of Marianne being once again functional, maybe the types of non-surgical interventions such as medications or just not doing anything at all and just letting Marianne pass. It already seems that Marianne is far gone since her pupils are dilated and non-reactive. A more conducive testing of her brain activity could help them make the decision on whether or not to proceed with the surgery or not. The family as a whole need to know the best option for Marianne, which doesn’t seem there is more left that can be done but to remove the clot and see what happens. Red cap: How might family members’ values and morals affect their decision-making process when faced with potential end-of-life decisions for a loved one? This is obviously a tough choice for the family, especially since they are divided in...

...Sociology and Family Family is the most important social institution in sociology today, as it helps to identify all human societies. Families are developed in different genre of society and can be defined as “a basic social unit consisting of parent(s) and their children, considered as a group of people living together or not. A typical family consists of a mother, father and their unmarried child or children. Today, families are separated into categories such as a single-parent families, stepfamilies, adopted families, grandparents or uncles or aunts raising another sibling child or children, and parents raising adult kids due to them moving back home or in need of the help to remain home; not to mention gay/lesbian couples are now allowed to have a family. Due to the uniqueness of every family, there will be some kind of similarities among the other. Whichever family type it is, one will find different perspectives as it relates to a family institution. In this paper, you will read about how the three society theories: functionalism, conflict and social interaction affect and the effect it has on families. You will also gain knowledge to find that social institutions are the results of social actions and also the causes of social actions. Families can be seen as a norm in a social relationship. This tradition is conducted and reinforced by religion, politicians, mass media and other indoctrinated natives. The diversity of a family structure has changed over the...

...will describe what I have learnt from Egan model stage ǀ and stage II, and all my personal feeling observations from working with class client. According on the book, Egan model stage 1 is to help the helper address a main question which is 'what is going on?' (Egan 1994, p. 200). But before the helper and patient start any virtual consult, a healthy trust should be built up between with them. In the class, when I try to approach to Costa, he came into conflict with all my questions straight away. As a practitioner I would like to expect a perfect clinic patient, who was easy to talk with and carried less wariness. But Costa is kind of difficult to deal with. He is 50 years old Greek male, married, has 2 children in the college. His wife brought him into the clinic. She was quite worried about him, because he has prostate problems, over weight issue, hypertension and type 2 diabetes. In the first consultation, Costa seemed does not want to talk much about his illness state. I knew most guys refuse to talk about prostate cause it releases to genitals. He maybe feel shame and embarrassed about this kind of topic. In the Egan model stage I what I should do is to make him to trust me. As long as I move to the topic about his work and family life, he seems put down the heart of alarm, his sitting position looks more relax and his tone turns much more soft. From the conversation, I felt Costa is patriarchy husband. He loves his family. He works hard to support family. And meanwhile...

...Family Health Assessment For this health assessment assignment the system theory was used on a family member from the African American decent as a way of assessing the family as a whole and not an individual. The “Systems theory explains patterns of living among the individuals who make up family systems”( Edelman, 2010, p. 173). The family member was interviewed and open ended family questions that focused on the eleven functional health patterns were asked. The eleven functional health patterns are values, health perception, nutrition, sleep/rest, elimination, activity/exercise, cognitive/perception, self perception, role relationship, sexuality and coping. By asking questions about these eleven health patterns the interviewer began to understand the family members values, health status, health practice and health beliefs and the importance of using the system theory for family assessment. The first question focused on family values. The family expressed the importance of having a personal relationship with God and not just a relationship with a place of worship, as a top value in their life. “Meanings and values provide the vital elements of motivation and energy for family systems”(Edelman, 2010, p. 173). They valued having a relationship with God because if an individual does not have a relationship with God they will not be able to overcome the difficulties that they experience in life because they “process information and energy exchange with the environment...

...mother described her childhood on the farm as very unique and different from the urban areas. She believed that life on the farm has helped her to become an independent person. According to “Black Farmers in America” by the USDA it states “farming as a family-owned and independent business has been an important part of the social and economic development in the United States. But for black farmers it was more often than not a losing struggle.” (USDA). This shows that the black farmers who farmed in that era has experienced a lot to make ends meet. My great grandfather went through the discrimination of his skin color. Although my grandfather went through many challenges to fulfill his mission of farming, he overcame those obstacles and stood strong for what he believed...

...Cook April 12, 2012 CWV101-Crawford Family Television Review The situation comedy that highlights family values and functions for this Family Television Review is the show called The Parkers. The name of the family is The Parkers which is a family with a single mother and a daughter both attending college. Observations of the family lead me to the conclusion that their worldview is between a naturalism and secular worldview. While watching the show The Parkers I have observe that The Parkers live they life base off naturalism and secular because they are fulfilling their dreams in life regardless of what people might say or believe. On the following episode e the the mother Nikki Parkers truly believes her and the professor is a couple and he is cheating on her with some skinny women. The Nikki character is following the professor around and trying to find out what he is up too even though it is clear they are not a couple and will never be. The other character is Kimberly Parker she is clearly not the smartest character on the show but her personality makes up for it. She has this bubbly personality that is easy to get along with and she always has some silly or funny to say that make people take a double take. They both do things that make them feel good about themselves like going to college to farther themselves in life, they both like fashion and attention from men. The Parkers are there for each other regardless of what might happen and they do not let others...

...The complexities in a family are very diverse. The way one family operates may not be ‘normal’ for another; however it does not make them any less full of love. There are many obstacles that can occur, rendering a family ‘broken’ or ‘dysfunctional’ in the eyes of society, but the power to persevere still remains. Families come in all forms, from the typical ‘nuclear’ household to the single-parent household, and although their relationships may seem weak, the individuals involved still carry the same emotions. In the play, The Glass Menagerie, by Tennessee Williams, the Wingfield family has been left broken from the effects of abandonment but continue to fill their roles as a typical family. As a unit, it is easily seen that the Wingfield family has their issues. At the start of the play, the reader is introduced to each character, and their flaws and broken...

...defined and it really depends on who you ask and what their degree of happiness is in their life, Gilbert the author of Stumbling on Happiness, explains that experiences might bring more satisfaction than that of durable goods. With this he is simply stating the fact that happiness is dependent the things you do in life and not the objects. It is the time that you share with friends and family what makes life meaningful and that creates happiness. All the objects in the world that money can buy is meaningless when you don't have anyone to share it with. 2. Harvard economists Alberto Alesina and Paolo Giuliano say that strong family ties imply more reliance on the family as an economic unit that provides goods and services and less on outside institutions such as those found in the market place and government. Why does household production (doing things together or making things within the home) activity have such an impact on family ties? Can you give an example from your own family? Not completely sure if I am answering this question correctly but basically the way I see things, I must say I agree with both economists who say that strong family ties imply more reliance on the family as an economic unit and etc. Household production has a huge impact on family ties because I believe that it is very important when families work together and produce things that become of value to their household and their family. For example my family and I have worked together as a team to remodel...

White cap: What pieces of information are needed to assist the family in making a decision regarding Marianne’s care? The information provided explains that Marianne, 79, was admitted to the emergency department yesterday with a sever headache. She became unresponsive and a CT scan of her brain revealed she had a hemorrhagic stroke. Her pupils are dilated and unresponsive to light. She is breathing only with a respirator. The piece of information to assist the family in decision-making is the fact that her pupils are dilated and she is unresponsive breathing only with a respirator device. The surgeon cannot guarantee quality of life even with the clot removed (Black, p. 175, 2010). We know that Marianne’s children and husband are involved in the decision making regarding her care and have differing opinions on what medical measures should be done. Her doctor wants to perform surgery but not much information on her quality of life post-surgery is available, nor do we have information on the pros and cons of surgery given her diagnosis and age. We would need to find out from the husband why he feels it is best to “try everything”. Is this because...

My husband is a stay at home husband and we have a 9 1/2 year old son. My husband simply does not like to sit down at the dining room table and eat with my son and I. He prefers to sit in the living room in front of the tv or in front of the computer in the computer room and eat his dinner while either watching tv or surfing the net. It makes me feel like he is sending us a message that he is too good to sit down and eat with us. He will make exceptions for holiday meals or birthday meals. I have insisted that he sit down and eat with us and told him how it makes me feel, but he tells me that most families don't eat together anymore. I'd love to hear what you all do at meal time and what...

...The key element in the play, “A Raisin in the Sun” is the theme of choices. Family members make decisions without talking to one another about it, causing disarray and argument. Without telling anybody, Ruth puts a down payment on the abortion of the child she is pregnant with, which the reader/audience discovers in the second scene. Lena spends $3500 getting a new house for the Youngers in a predominantly white neighborhood, with no discussion. Even though his family is against it, Walter Lee invests his money in opening a liquor store with a friend. The last person, Beneatha, struggles to choose who she will marry; someone who can support her financially, or a man who can help her get in touch with her culture. Though the Younger family...

...Every family has their different way how to treat their family, by showing their love or sometimes they use the hard way to show it. Those times together with our family are always going to be the precious time for each of us. We may have some hard times with our family, we fight with each other, argue to one another, insult, or even punch each other; but when it comes to love, our family has an endless love for us. Without them we may be a different person, because they are the one that make us who we are now. According to Goodman, basically she said that even though we argue with each other but we also take for each other. She also mentioned there is two parts of us in our family, which is the “we” and the “I”. We are all “raised in families … to be individuals” (Goodman, 4). They taught us everything, how to survive in this cruel world. We always come back to our family in the hardest moment of our lives, and surprisingly they will not bring us down. We make mistakes and some people will not forgive us, but family will. Once I read: Boyfriend, Girlfriend, and Friend all of them has an “end” but family has “ily” which means “I love you” and we should believe in that, nobody will treat us as good as our family will ever do. Furthermore, the “we” and the “I” are really obvious. The “we” is when we are together, for example on holiday when we eat together, laugh together, just having a moment of our life. We “ruthlessly compete with each other” but yet we work together that...

...cwV-101 December 9, 2012 Family Television Review I decided to review Family Guy as my family sitcom. Although I have watched the show for a while I never really thought about what kind of worldview the family has or how it has impacted my own views on family values. In this sitcom it seems to me that the family does try to be good a Christian family and go to church but, they do not succeed in doing so. The family is rude to one another and the baby tries to kill his mother in almost every episode. I do understand that it is made for comedy purposes only I believe that sometimes they tend to overstep the boundaries. I do believe that they try to make the family seem like they would do anything for each other. In one of the episodes the mother tries to cover up for her son because they believed he murdered a man but it turns out he did not. To me that shows although he broke the law she was willing to do anything for him to protect him. I do believe that television shows impact our views on life and our views on family values. After watching this show I realized that it impacted my view on family values negatively. I would not want my family to be dysfunctional like the Griffin family. They make fun of the eldest daughter in many episodes, the second son Chris does horribly in school and both children to not respect their parents. The parents Peter and Louis love each other and I can see that in episodes and in all of the episodes I have seen they are monogamous to...

...is extremely important to make sure to please the audiences and inform the audience of the details that are available. In the article “Over 30 Workers Trapped After Chilean Copper Mine Collapse” the writer, Juan Weik, is straight to the point giving some details to the matter at hand. Weik doesn’t go to far in depth in his details just stating facts on what is happening. Weik is writing this to inform everyone of the incident including fellow workers, families, friends, and others that are concerned. I think since this is a article that is directed to the public, Weik did enough for the families and friends. Not giving to much information to make the families worry anymore than they possibly already are. The biggest concern with the article would be that information about the problems the company has had in the past as it will not make families and friends feel any better about this already scary tragedy that is happening. I feel that this could have been held out of the way until after the men were saved, for the family’s sake. The company itself if it did not already should have issued some more personal messages to the families of the miner that were trapped if they knew more information or kept them up on it as much as they could. After delivering the messages to the families, the companies should leave each family with someone in the company to keep in contact with to make sure that as soon as they find any information out that the families would be first to know. ...
