What makes a hospital successful? In an article written for the website Nursezone.com, it states, “Top hospitals have developed and implemented a successful business and clinical strategies that allow them to balance their finances and patient care” (Larson, 2002). Pastor John A. Burden, a Seventh-day Adventist, founded Loma Linda University Medical Center on May 29, 1905 (“A Brief History Loma Linda University Health,” 2014). For more than one hundred years, Loma Linda University has dedicated itself to the teaching and ministry of Jesus Christ through service, research, healthcare, learning, and spiritual life.
It was Pastor Burden’s wish to not only start a medical center, but train young Seventh-day Adventists to eventually become missionaries (“A Brief History Loma Linda University Health,” 2014). Today Loma Linda University School of Medicine is dedicated to training students by emphasizing the patient’s needs, and capitalizing on preventative care in efforts to slow down future disease. Their philosophy is to provide a Christian-like atmosphere, while providing students with a learning environment that offers excellent teachers and training facilities. Loma Linda University has chosen as its motto, “To Make Man Whole.” It seeks to restore man to wholeness, that he may more fully enjoy relationships with his fellowman and communion with God.
Aside from becoming a teaching facility, Loma Linda University has a variety of outreach programs designed to give back to the community locally and globally. PossAbilities is an example of one of their local outreach programs, that offers people born with disabilities or suffered physical injury a place to feel safe and welcomed. One of their goals is to offer a sense of community through social collaboration with their peers. They offer membership for people with physical disabilities such as stroke, spinal cord injury, limb amputation, muscular dystrophy, spina bifida and many others (PossAbilities, 2015). The benefits of membership include, social and recreational activities, peer mentoring, support groups, and grant/scholarship opportunities, just to name a few (PossAbilities, 2015).
I believe this hospital should be recognized for their amount of research they do in order to find better ways to help and treat people. The third baby in the world to receive a heart transplant was done at Loma Linda University Medical Center, and was finally recognized internationally. At the time, more that 10,000 babies were born in the United States with hypoplastic left heart syndrome, however no one was willing to perform the complicated surgery. The baby only lived 20 and a half days, and a year after her death, baby Moses was referred to the hospital for a heart transplant. On November 19, 1985 baby Moses, at only four days old, was the youngest in the world to receive a heart transplant successfully (“Loma Linda University Medical Center Legacy: Daring to Care,” 2015).
Growing up I was raised Seventh-day Adventist and one of the beliefs/values we were taught was to treat your body like a temple. I was taught to avoid meat and focus on a more plant-based diet. On November 2005, National Geographic named Loma Linda one of the places where people live significantly longer aside from Okinawa and Sardinia (Buettner, 2005). “Residents of these three places produce a high rate of centenarians, suffer a fraction of the diseases that commonly kill people in other parts of the developed world, and enjoy more healthy years of life” (Buettner, 2005). In saying that, this hospital is more about providing care to their patients. They are about teaching prevention through lifestyle as well as showing others that giving back to the community locally and globally in efforts to live in a better world is the way to our future. Maybe I’m bias because I’ve lived in Loma Linda, or maybe because I am Seventh-day Adventist, but I truly believe that Loma Linda University Medical Center deserves to be in the top 100 hospitals.

In it, he describes how Cleveland Clinic is preparing for the future of medicine by keeping the focus on the patient (Cosgrove, 2014). One reason I feel that the Cleveland Clinic is a top hospital is due to their expenditures and budgeting practices. Cleveland Clinic's total operating revenue in 2013 was $6.5 billion, and its operating income was $296 million. At the end of last year, Cleveland Clinic had 320 days cash on hand. It was also known to have $9.14 billion dollars in total patient revenue according to a report by Jamie Oh (Oh, 2011). These types...

...sherrimoche@yahoo.com What makes a top 100 hospital? Johns Hopkins Medicine HSM310 Introduction to Health Services Management 11/18/13 Professor Hastings 2 There are many factors involved in deciding what makes a top 100 hospital. Not only is it about great patient care, low mortality rate and safe procedures; but a hospital also needs to be able to function financially as well. The healthcare industry is a business as well as a medical institution. Since the health care field is always changing, medical facilities need to be up to date on the latest medical breakthroughs and have the ability to research new techniques. Johns Hopkins Hospital, based in Baltimore, Maryland, is a non-profit organization dedicated to improving the “health of the community and the world” (hopkinsmedicine.org.) Johns Hopkins, in a population of 1.5 million people, was a philanthropist who wanted to give back to the community by setting higher standards of healthcare. In his will, Johns Hopkins included his desire to construct not only a hospital, but a university as well (The Biography Channel, 2013). He was a firm believer in furthering ones education in the hope of finding cures for all diseases. This concept of marrying medicine and education is referred to as Johns Hopkins Medicine. Mayo Clinic

...“What Makes a Top 100 Hospital” What Makes a Top 100 Hospital? What would make Mayo Clinic one of the most recognized hospitals in the nation? We will discuss the many reasons and what it takes to be so well recognized and the many benefits that Mayo Clinic has to offer. “The Mayo Clinic has not only been recognized by numerous agencies for its quality in health care, but it has been recognized more so than any other academic medical center in the nation.” (Kroker, 2013) In 2012, Mayo earned the No. 3 overall spot on the “best hospitals” list and ranked No. 1 in the nation in five areas- gynecology, diabetes and endocrinology, gastroenterology, nephrology, and pulmonology. History of Mayo Clinic William Worrall Mayo, who settled in Rochester, Minn. in 1863, is the founding father of what is now called the Mayo Clinic. Mayo Clinic was developed gradually from Dr. Mayo’s medical practice. His dedication became a family tradition and his two sons, Will and Charles joined his practice in 1883 and 1888. Later as they succeeded with their “pooled” knowledge and skills, patients discovered this advantage. They had developed a reputation for excellence in patient care. Doctors and students came from around the world to learn new techniques from the Mayo’s. Patients also came from around the world for treatment. Since 1919, the Mayo Clinic has spread largely to two additional cities including Jacksonville Fl., and Phoenix Arizona. The main campus in Rochester employs...

...going to an actual hospital. This facility is not considered a hospital and therefore does not provide any type of emergency care. In an ambulatory surgery center patients do not need admission, go home right after their procedure and do not stay overnight. Running a surgical center is no easy task, so knowing the laws and regulations are extremely important. There can be many legal issues involved so proper training and education are vital components for the staff and healthcare professionals within those types of facilities. There are many legal issues that mainly involve dealing with physician ownership, network waivers and Medicare cases. Physician ownership seems to be one of the most legally debatable issues having to do with ambulatory centers. This is due to a lot of new owners that come in and buy the business from old owners leaving it. Most owners have to be able to understand their contract with legal obligation for the concerning buyer when selling the center. Selling a surgery center can be difficult especially if it is due to a financial situation. All owners of a business like this must be optimistic about acquiring new business to increase financial compensation and should be monitoring this type of activity with their own software. It is always important to track productivity statistics early to know what you are up against and what changes need to be made, if any. Continuous assessments and monthly audits can help an owner to stay on top of the profits being...

...Application Paper xxxxxxxxxx DeVry University HSM 310 September 14, 2014 Dr. Becky Foster What Makes The Mayo Clinic a Top 100 Hospital? To become one of the best hospitals in the United States the facility needs to be more than just an Emergency Department. Yet, to be claimed as the number one hospital in the whole US is astounding (Leonard 2014). These great hospital facilities also offer more than just a delivery and nursery ward. The great hospitals, such as the Mayo Clinic, offer a full array of medical services and medical specialists and they do all of this while giving exceptional customer service that move them from the ordinary category, to the extraordinary category. The Mayo Clinic’s History The Mayo Clinic is a non-profit hospital and medical group that was started by just one medical doctor back in 1864, Dr. William Mayo (Lanier 2014). Mayo Clinic

...University Mayo Clinic The magical Mayo Clinic has what every hospital is looking for; exceptional patient care, top of the industry research, and an impeccable budget. Mayo Clinic is considered a leader in cancer, heart disease, respiratory disorders, and urology in research as well as patient care. It is a rarity that a hospital is ranked at the top of the U.S. ratings in so many specialties. According to Kotler and Keller, “The clinic’s two interrelated core values trace back to its founders and are at the heart of the all the organization does: placing the patient’s interests above all others and practicing teamwork” (2012). Mayo Clinic is so good at customer service because the doctors and staff are all working towards a common goal, the ultimate best care for the patients, instead of worrying about their counter parts making more money and gaining more fame. One of the biggest differences between Mayo Clinic and other hospitals, private and not-for-profit, is that the patients state the “feeling” of accommodation and caring is felt the minute the patient begins speaking with anyone that is employed by the Clinic from volunteers, housekeeping, to the highest ranked physicians. The Mayo Clinic concentrates on teamwork between their doctors. All the doctors at the Mayo Clinic are salaried employees instead of getting paid for how many patients they treat, or how many exam referrals they create. This concept makes patient care quicker and smoother when a doctor doesn’t...
