What Role Do Zombies Play In Modern Culture

Submitted By

In most zombie movies, zombies are described as savages, not worth the empathy, incapable of speech or learning and essentially, the only good zombie is a dead zombie. The living dead received a new role in modern culture. Zombies became protagonists and more charming than scary. One of such examples is an American supernatural crime comedy series “iZombie”. After Liv Moore becomes a zombie, she begins working in the city morgue where she eats victims’ brains. Soon, she realizes that her new diet gives her the personality, abilities and memories of the person whose brain she ingested.
People began their zombification process after consuming a drug called utopium. In addition, they can be turned into zombies after being scratched. Liv is the

In this case “the time is ripe for the rebirth of zombie culture” (17), to deliver the adrenaline to all audience, especially the younger generation. ...Erin Coutts Professor Buck Jane Austen Pop Culture 7 October, 2015 Understanding Jane Austen It truly amazes me how the novel Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen and the rewrite of Pride and Prejudice by Seth Grahame-Smith can encompass the exact same story plot, yet still be different in so many ways. Jane Austen’s original book is a romantic drama that describes the difficulties faced when dealing with love and family. Her style of writing focuses on language and verbiage. Alternatively, Seth Grahame-Smith is able to rewrite this drama into more of an action thriller including zombies, ninja warriors, and sword fights through his creative and unique writing that instead focuses on characters’ actions and behaviors. While readers may initially wonder how this drastic transformation is possible, Seth is able to effectively deepen the reader’s understanding of the book through his inventive, modern concepts which help create new perspectives that the reader might have otherwise overlooked. As one of the most important sentences in the book, Jane Austen begins the first chapter with, “It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife” (Austen 1). This sentence describes the theme of marriage which encompasses the majority of Pride and Prejudice. Seth’s version instead encompasses the life of zombies and zombie-slayers in comparison to single men and women. Thus, he updates this first, crucial sentence- “It...

The younger generation has turned towards playing video games; with every generation of new graphics card comes out a new level of realism is achieved, and the developer tries to make more games that look like and has feel of a real life. We already spend hours out of our daily routine either killing zombies in walking dead, or killing other people and dealing drugs to become a crime lord in Grand Theft Auto, or sometimes just living a completely different life style in a role playing game like second life and World of Warcraft. We prefer to sit home and play video games rather than go out and play hide and seek. Most of us who are not good at physical sports like soccer or baseball, tries to play and be good at those sports in video games like NBA and Tiger Woods. We try to be a person that we are not or in some cases we cannot be, in video games. Someone tries to live their fantasy of being...

Sexism in the Video Game Industry

...Professor Andrew Forrester Discernment and Discourse 1313 5 May 2014 Sexism Sells: The Male Dominated Video Game Industry Only 4% of video game titles released in the past 10 years feature a playable female character as the leading role, and there are even fewer female protagonists on the list of the top grossing video games (ESA). This trend of male dominated storylines is evident in other forms of media as well: movies and television shows tend to be centered around men, but video games show the least diversity in protagonists and often have regressive views on women and their position in society. Women make up 20% of console video game players and 46% of computer and mobile game players in this 20 billion dollar a year industry, meaning they are contributing a large amount of profits (ESA). Despite their significant purchasing power, they are not represented equally as characters in games, and continue to be used as a plot device or sexual being to attract the male target audience. Neither are they allowed to be a compelling character with a story arc and personal growth as we see with the male protagonist. Female characters, when included, tend to be one dimensional and only valued for typically how they fit into traditional gender roles by being submissive and innocent. This narrow portrayal of women comes from the fact that the developers of video games are predominantly men. Only 11% of game designers are women and only 3% of programmers, even though it is one of the...

...The Cosmopolitan Society and its Enemies Ulrich Beck I N THIS article I want to discuss three questions: (1) What is a cosmopolitan sociology? (2) What is a cosmopolitan society? (3) Who are the enemies of cosmopolitan societies? What is a Cosmopolitan Sociology? Let me start by attempting to nail a pudding to the wall, that is, defining the key terms ‘globalization’ and ‘cosmopolitanization’. At the beginning of the 21st century the conditio humana cannot be understood nationally or locally but only globally. ‘Globalization’ is a non-linear, dialectic process in which the global and the local do not exist as cultural polarities but as combined and mutually implicating principles. These processes involve not only interconnections across boundaries, but transform the quality of the social and the political inside nation-state societies. This is what I define as ‘cosmopolitanization’: cosmopolitanization means internal globalization, globalization from within the national societies. This transforms everyday consciousness and identities significantly. Issues of global concern are becoming part of the everyday local experiences and the ‘moral life-worlds’ of the people. They introduce significant conflicts all over the world. To treat these profound ontological changes simply as myth relies on a superficial and unhistorical understanding of ‘globalization’, the misunderstandings of neoliberal globalism. The study of globalization and globality, cosmopolitanization and cosmopolitanism...

In 1972, a new form of entertainment became commercially available with the release of the video game Pong. In Pong, two players tried to "hit" an electronic "ball" back and forth. From these humble beginnings, a revolution in the entertainment industry was born. Interactive game revenues are now significantly greater than the domestic film industry ("Industrial Strengths," 2000). Worldwide video games sales are now at $20 billion annually (Cohen, 2000). The PlayStation video game console, which began as a side project at Sony, now represents $6 billion of the company's $20 billion in annual sales (Cohen, 2000). It is reasonable to question whether video games may have similar effects...

Computer Models of the Mind Are Invalid

...Ray Tallis t is a great pleasure to have this joust with Igor who is not only a brilliant thinker about the mind, but also a great intellectual sparring partner. Igor has expressed his dissent from the view that I’m going to advance in support of the motion which is that ‘computer models of the mind are invalid’,1 in his book: The World in My Mind, My Mind In The World: Key Mechanisms of Consciousness in Humans, Animals and Machines. He actually devotes five pages of the final chapter to what he calls ‘Tallis’s complaint’ which I am now going to make public. The point of issue is whether computer models of the mind are valid. I am going to argue that they are not because the computational theory of mind is invalid. Igor may go on to argue that even if the computational theory of mind is invalid it may still be useful in the sense of being fruitful. I will leave him to prove that and simply suggest to you that while barking up the wrong tree may give a sense of progress it is illusory. So what is the computational theory of mind? It is that the mind is to the brain as the software is to the hardware, or to put it slightly differently the mind is a set of computer programs implemented in the wetware of the...

...demanding that she do something via the rules, the gameplay itself should inherently motivate the player in the direction the designer wants her to go. Telling players they must travel around the board or advance to the next level is one thing. If they don’t have a reason and a desire to do it, then it becomes torture. In creating a game, designers take a step back and think from the player’s viewpoint: What’s this game about? How do I play? How do I win? Why do I want to play? What things do I need to do? MEANINGFUL DECISIONS Distilled down to its essence, game design is about creating opportunities for players to make meaningful decisions that affect the outcome of the game. Consider a game like a boxing match. So many decisions lead up to the ultimate victory. How long will I train? Will I block or will I swing? What is my opponent going to do? Where is his weakness? Jab left or right? Even those few, brief questions don’t come close to the myriad decisions a fighter must make as he progresses through a match. Games invite players into similar mental spaces. Games like Tetris and Chess keep our minds busy by forcing us to consider which one of several possible moves we want to take next. In taking these paths, we know that we may be prolonging or completely screwing up our entire game. The Sims games and those in Sid Meier’s Civilization series force dozens of decisions upon the player every minute. Few of these decisions are as direct as “Do you want to go...
