Thus, Rousseau feels in order to study inequality among men we should look to the earlier days, and not to that of which came through man’s successive developments, (Ritter & Bondanella, pgs. 8-11); Therefore, generally laying out how he is concerned with the inequality present when man becomes civilized because according to Rousseau such circumstances are rare in the state of nature where all things proceed in an absolute uniform manner, (Ritter & Bondanella,...

...at his work to figure out what he wants out of life and what he doesn’t want out of life. Sammy works as a cashier at a small town grocery store called A & P somewhere in New England. From the start of the story he comes off as a sarcastic teenager who observes and analyzes everything and everybody. The whole story starts when three girls walk into the grocery store in nothing but their bathing suits. Right away, Sammy is obsessed with these girls, going into detail with what they are wearing, how they are walking, and even by the way they wear their hair. It seems purely sexual at first. For example, he goes into extreme detail about the chunky ones ‘cans’ and Queenie’s breast. He describes all three of them but really focuses on their leader, Queenie. He illustrates her as a very attractive and confident girl who has no problem walking against the crowd and convincing her friends that it is completely acceptable to go into a small town grocery store in their bathing suits. As the story progresses you get this sense that he envies her and the confidence she has to go against the social norms that the society has put there. His jealously becomes even clearer when his manager, Lengel, approaches the girls regarding their attire. He says that they want decently dressed people shopping at the store. Queenie tries to save face by saying her mother sent her to pick up a jar of herring snacks, and right away, Sammy loses himself to a fantasy of what Queenie’s parents are like...

...Summary on Conformity, Defiance, and Crime In the book Essentials of Sociology in the 6th chapter tells us what conformity, defiance, and crime are, among other things of that nature. Conformity is falling in line with what the given rules and normal behavior society accepts. Defiance is exactly the opposite, its defined by the book as “nonconformity to a given set of norms that are accepted.” So doing anything most people in that culture wouldn’t see normal. It’s a very broad subject. Anything from wearing a long sleeve shirt in the middle of the summer to a murder can be seen as deviant behavior. Edwin Lemert told us that he viewed the first act of deviance as primary deviance; this is the one act that gives the individual the label as a deviant. Then there was secondary deviance in which the individual accepts the label of deviant and starts to relapse committing these deviant acts, the acts progressively getting worse. Sometimes groups do these deviant acts together, this is called a deviant subculture. These form when there is a group of people whom all have the same values and practices, just something’s they do are seen as deviant. If that’s not clear an example of this would be the Heavens’ Gates Cult, who believed the world was doomed and the only way to survive was to commit suicide and have your soul saved by a UFO. Most people reading this would find that very odd and not normal to believe, well that makes then deviants and since they’re a group it’s a deviant subculture...

...computer at the kitchen table. The wife is admiring her loving husband. While the husband is staring intently at the computer. William states that computers are more often than not portrayed in the media as a “guy thing”. But he says women are certainly portrayed as users of technology in the larger culture. What I get from this William is trying to portray that men are being stereotyped as computer geeks when in this society women are the voices for technology. “What changes are needed in the computer culture to improve its image, repair its deficits, and make it more appealing to girls and women?” (iv). "Gender Studies." Cambridge Dictionary of Sociology. Ed. Bryan S. Turner. Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 2006. Credo Reference. Web. 26 Oct 2015. Turner starts with informing the readers that this topic has many subtopic to go with it which means more information on it. Turner then goes on by telling the readers other subtopic that can go with such as gender in feminism, women’s studies and many more. Turner moves on in to a sociology stand point and defines social constructionism. Turner says “Sociologists are concerned with understanding how people do, rather than have, gender . . .” Turner also mentions and example. Masculinity is itself not a uniform expression of male identity. To back up turner’s example he brings in one of his sources. In Gender and Power, R. W. Connell (1987) has argued that masculinity and femininity are normalized gender...

...in this essay more definite to the reader. He does so at various occasions. This can be noticed when he mentions the Japanese men on the raft, his description of their condition almost parallels that of Japan itself at the end of the war. Then when we see him mention what actions were taken against these men, this can be seen as a correlation to the harsh actions taken against Japan at the end of the war. Also when he mentions the part where his grandfather takes him into his closet, where he continues his story, correlates to a confession chamber in church. This image adds to another meaning that he depicts in his essay for which he also presents many other images. He puts in question the actions of his grandfather and how they reflect upon his character. Orner’s use of distinct imagery points to a deeper meaning in every part of his essay. Throughout his telling of the tale we can clearly see that he is trying to tell us more than what he is saying. One such occasion is seen when, through the words of his grandfather he describes the condition of the Japanese men his grandfather came across. His grandfather, who was the captain of a battleship during World War 2, describes the incident of when he was asked to handle a situation. An object was spotted approaching the ship he captained which caused alarm. It turned out to be a number of Japanese men afloat a raft. Orner’s grandfather said that their condition “looked like...

...President George W. Bush was in office during the 9/11 attacks. This was a tragic moment in the United States history and the future of American foreign policy! This is what the President had to say in his address to the nation “On the morning of September the 11th, 2001, our nation awoke to a nightmare attack. Nineteen men armed with box cutters took control of airplanes and turned them into missiles. They used them to kill nearly 3,000 innocent people. We watched the twin towers collapse before our eyes, and it became instantly clear that we'd entered a new world and a dangerous new war”1. The President starts of by reminding the people of the United States of how the terrorist took down the twin towers and killed innocent people. Now there seems to be a trend when the word terrorism and innocent appears. Not implying that the 9/11 victims were not innocent, but that there is always an innocent group when a terrorist group attacks. At the end of the paragraph President Bush has declared a new type of warfare and how it won’t be like anything the United States has dealt with. The president goes on to state this new type of war, “The terrorists who declared war on America represent no nation. They defend no territory. And they wear no uniform. They do not mass armies on borders or flotillas of warships on...

...How does Steinbeck present the ranch community in Of Mice and Men? Value of Work and Working Men in Of Mice and Men for GCSE and IGCSE Steinbeck presents the ranch community with a startling degree of realism, dramatising a condition created by the Great Depression of migrant labourers, forced into work communities, with no families. This is summarized in the key quotation at the start of the novel where George says ‘guys like us are the loneliest guys in the world.’ It’s a large scale farm with permanent and temporary workers, then the boss and boss’ son, and wife - who all have a higher status. The men put in ‘crops’ but never reap what they sow. The American Dream is to be self-reliant and self-sufficient - to own land - not to be isolated, but to be empowered, to be secure and to be able to ‘have fren’s over’. Though the men are forced into community on the ranch, there’s little friendship or kindness because of the poor conditions and poor job security. The community is presented as being intolerant of any kind of weakness - is racist and sexist - and often cruel. Here, there’s little sense of humanity: man is a machine whose purpose is to work. If one breaks down, you can always get another one. IDEA ONE The ranch is at the heart of the novel, framed by Chapters One and Six which are set in the same Edenic natural landscape in the ‘Gabilan hills’. This is the natural, god-given beauty of America - ‘gold’ and ‘warm’ - precious. It has both a mythical and a vividly realistic...

...functions, individuals are judged on their appearances and actions, however soldiers are molded to have the same features, uniform, and purpose there is nothing to judge except the people themselves. This is the case for all the soldiers in Vietnam but specifically the Alpha Company of Tim O’Brien’s The Things They Carried. The soldiers in the company bond while serving in Vietnam. However, regardless of how close they become, they always have the inclination to never show fear or weakness and always attempt to maintain their reputations. The soldiers within The Things They Carried struggle to determine what is more important to them, their reputation or well being. This concept brings up the questions: How does Tim O’Brien depict the role of reputation within The Things They Carried and to what extent do the soldiers go to in order to...

...race. Privilege is a way of thinking that “generally allows people to assume a certain level of acceptance, inclusion, and respect in the world, to operate within a relatively wide comfort zone” (Rothenberg, 103). At the time of the civil war, white people took it upon themselves to decide who gets taken seriously and who is accountable to whom for what. They assumed superiority among every other race, as they were humans who had no race, they were simply humans. White people, men in particular, were entitled to any and every freedom that the Constitution allowed. In this film, Lincoln is fighting to pass the thirteenth amendment, which would free the slaves and end the devastation of the Civil War. The white soldiers are praised in the film for the battle that they are fighting, although the battle being fought is not theirs. There is much debate about whether or not the amendment shall be passed among the white congressmen because they do not believe that black people are equal. The opening scene begins with a violent scene where soldiers are attacking one another and many of those being attacked are black. A voice over says that every Negro soldier held hostage was killed...
