“What’s Eating Gilbert Grape” is a film of psychological troubles and difficulties for almost every main character. Gilbert Grape is a young man living in a small town with big responsibilities. His mother, who is too overweight to leave the house, and Arnie, his younger brother, is mentally impaired. Betty, Gilbert’s mistress, is in distress about her home and sexual life. Becky is the new girl with an adventurous mindset and the only kind of relief for Gilbert. Gilbert grape uses free recall of the sound of sirens throughout the movie. If Gilbert hears sirens and Arnie is not around, he rushed to the water house to find Arnie climbing it. He is extrovert and ignores his inner feelings until they build up and he snaps. Gilbert Grape can be disobedient and randomly leave the house and disappear for a while resembling his older brother, upsetting his mother. Gilbert creates a new phobia of water for his little brother Arnie after leaving him in the bathtub overnight. Arnie was freezing by morning and did not like to swim or bathe after the incident. Gilbert’s mother suffers from a long-term depression that leads to an eating disorder. Events placing her in this depression are her husband killing himself and her oldest son suddenly disappearing and never coming back. Ever since her husband died in the house he built himself, and which they live in, she has not left. She was attached to the house, especially the couch downstairs. She is not able or willing to go outside or even get up and she has been on the couch for 7 years. His mother desperately needs psychotherapy to help cope with her depression and feelings of being an outcast to the town. The town has been a negative social influence on her. Before the two incidents, she was one of the prettiest girls in town but after she gained weight, the town treats her as a joke.
Arnie is the character that is surrounded by aggression the most. In the film, he is being pulled by the hair by his sister and slapped by his brother. Arnie also has a disability causing him to hit himself when he is mad or upset. It seemed easy for the other characters to show signs of aggression toward Arnie because he does not understand how to act. His siblings become frustrated and add positive punishment to try to get him to listen or to relieve their own anger. Although Arnie’s attitude was always happy and not serious, his behavior did not always reflect that. Arnie got into trouble like climbing the town’s water tower and doing other small mischievous things.
Betty is emotionally unstable. She desires sex and attention especially from Gilbert. Her desire becomes so strong that even while bonding with her children, she abruptly tells them to go outside when Gilbert shows up. She uses classical conditioning with Gilbert. When she calls the grocery store for a delivery, he knows it is not really about the groceries but it is about her wanting to have sex. The unconditioned stimulus being the sex. The unconditioned response is Gilbert going over for the sex. The neutral stimulus would be the delivery of the groceries. After so many times of her calling, Gilbert going, and them having sexual relations, he knew once she called they would have sex. Therefore, the grocery deliveries become the conditioned stimulus and he going over is the conditioned response. Betty may have some kind of mental illness or insanity, her husband died a mysterious death, and the townspeople believe she may have murdered him. When asked about her recently deceased husband she shows no remorse and says she misses him but then she does not.
Becky is very introvert; she is a free-spirited hippy type of girl. She says she “does not believe in outside beauty because it does not last. What lasts is what is on the inside”. Becky is one of the few town residents that are not prejudice towards the Grape family. She does not look down upon Arnie and his disability or on Gilbert’s mother for being obese. Becky is pro-social and enjoys being around people. “What’s Eating Gilbert Grape” follows characters as they depend on one another and go day by day with their internal struggles. Each struggle seems to affect another person in his or her life. Arnie needs Gilbert but Gilbert wants a life outside of his responsibilities at home. He wants his mother to stop being so lazy and he wants to experience a relationship with Becky. Gilbert has suddenly become the man of the house and at the young age of 24 it was a challenge to care for his family and at the same time have a social life. Becky helps Gilbert find what he wants for himself instead of for others and acquire it, while still caring for Arnie.

Gilbert Grape

...What's Eating Gilbert Grape. The first main difference I'm going to touch on is how Becky is in both the movie and the book, and the difference in the relationship she has with Gilbert. The next thing I want to talk about is the different ways that Momma is portrayed in the two versions. Both of these two points that I've stated above seem like minor details but they have a huge impact on the overall story, and in the methods of character portrayal. Becky is two completely different people when looking at the book and the movie. In the book she is only 15 years old while Gilbert is in his 20's. While this is true in the book, in the movie it seems that Becky is older. The age change may just be a culture thing so the movie seems better for a wider demographic, either way it still changes the way Becky is perceived. Gilbert and Becky have a lot less conflict in the movie, which is not the case in the book. The book has two main scenes that were cut out of the movie. The first one is the watermelon incident where Gilbert gets tired of chasing Becky and leaves her watermelon on the ground at the gas station without second guessing himself. Showing that Gilbert does care about Becky but he does not want to play her games. In the whole book, Gilbert seems to play by his own rules and does pretty much what he wants without regard to others peoples thoughts, actions or reactions. The second with the both of them was the mirror scene, where Becky holds a mirror up so Gilbert can see...

Leo Not Winning an Oscar

...win against his competition and take home the award. What exactly is keeping someone who has been acting for twenty years from winning an Oscar? DiCaprio deserves to win an Oscar despite the fact that he has a rowdy behavior outside of acting, the roles he takes on aren't jaw-dropping, and that he's picky with the movies he will be in. Now that Leonardo is making $20 million per movie and is a single forty-year-old rich man, he takes his fame for granted and gets in trouble at huge parties and has been since he was a teenager. Tom Beer, author of the expose "Leonardo DiCaprio: Back in the Game," wrote, "He was partying in the clubs, he was picking fights with basketball players, he was dating every supermodel in sight." Beer's statement proves that DiCaprio is out of control and that people are starting to notice his ridiculous behavior. The Academy pays attention to celebrities and their actions outside of filming. Many people assume that just because a person is acting like an animal, they won't get the opportunity to receive an Oscar. In DiCaprio's defense, I don't think his personal life should determine whether or not he wins an award. Dedication and hardwork should be what gets recognized, not the decisions an adult is making outside of his career. DiCaprio has taken on major roles throughout his twenty years of acting. At a young age, he was nominated for Best Supporting Actor in the film What's Eating Gilbert Grape, where he portrays an 18-year-old boy with a developmental...

Growing up is a significant part of our lives. Childhood Childhood is an important factor of growing up as children begin to develop their sense of identity. This occurs during the period of birth and puberty in a person’s life. Arnie Grape, from the film ‘What’s Eating Gilbert Grape?’ (1993), is the definition of childhood. He is turning 18 years old but has developmental disability where he is stuck in a childhood state forever. A high angle shot of Arnie when he climbs the water tower is used to show how he was unsafe and helpless. The reverse shot shown while he was climbing the tower highlights his innocence and child-like manner. The montage of Arnie at the beginning of the film shows snippets of Arnies behaviour and attitudes. This give the audience an insight and brief understanding of his everyday life. Repetition/motif of Arnie playing hide-n-seek in the tree shows that he still has the playfulness in him as he did at the beginning of the film. The personality of an individual emerges through the stages of childhood and continues to develop as they grow. Maturity Maturity is influenced by the different factors of growing up such as childhood...

...http://cls.casa.colostate.edu/transgeniccrops/what.html What Are Transgenic Plants? A transgenic crop plant contains a gene or genes which have been artificially inserted instead of the plant acquiring them through pollination. The inserted gene sequence (known as the transgene) may come from another unrelated plant, or from a completely different species: transgenic Bt corn, for example, which produces its own insecticide, contains a gene from a bacterium. Plants containing transgenes are often called genetically modified or GM crops, although in reality all crops have been genetically modified from their original wild state by domestication, selection and controlled breeding over long periods of time. On this web site we will use the term transgenic to describe a crop plant which has transgenes inserted. Image:Results of insect infestation on Bt (right) and non-Bt (left) cotton bolls. Source: USDA | Why Make Transgenic Crop Plants? A plant breeder tries to assemble a combination of genes in a crop plant which will make it as useful and productive as possible. Depending on where and for what purpose the plant is grown, desirable genes may provide features such as higher yield or improved quality, pest or disease resistance, or tolerance to heat, cold and drought. Combining the best genes in one plant is a long and difficult process, especially as traditional plant breeding has been limited to artificially crossing plants within the same species or with closely related...
