...Heroicism and Evolution in Thomas Eakins’ The Gross Clinic and The Agnew Clinic Both Thomas Eakins’ The Gross Clinic (1875) and The Agnew Clinic (1889) are realistic oil paintings which depict a medical doctor lecturing to students about surgery. The two paintings, through the use of color, lighting, and space, both portray the doctor heroically and give high regard to the field of medicine. However, the tone of the two portraits, along with the way Eakins decided to portray the scene, are inherently different. The Gross Clinic is darker and more chaotic, while The Agnew Clinic is lighter and calmer. These disparities in the two paintings highlight the shift in the era of medicine and the advancement of medical technology in the 14 year time period between the two paintings. In both The Gross Clinic and The Agnew Clinic, Eakins put the focal point of the painting on the presumed head doctor using space, shape, and color. In The Gross Clinic, one doctor stands slightly to the left of the centre, above the rest of the medical staff and in the forefront of the painting. Even though Eakins put all the medical staff on the same plane, this doctor is distinguished from the rest. The incredible Sherlock Holmes stories by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle are not special cases joining the trend. A convention of the relationship between the detective and the sidekick has supported Doyle’s stories for over one century, in which Dr. Watson has been an iconic character complementary for the eccentric and intelligent Holmes. The brilliant creation of Dr. Watson, according to T.J. Binyon in “Murder Will Out,” provides readers with the authentic and plausible adventures by his narratives “through his prosaic, stolid personality”(10). However, elements of these poems can also be seen as to greatly juxtapose with ‘A Valediction’ focussing on the concept of ‘greater love’ enduring distance whilst ‘The Anniversary’ seems to portray the same love, though enduring time. Both poems convey a sense of ‘higher love’ - a highly spiritual experience. In ‘A Valediction’ Donne writes of ‘Dull, sublunary lovers’ in comparison to himself and his wife, using assonance to amplify the portrayal of these lovers as heavy-sounding and truly physical rather than anything more spiritual. The adjective ‘dull’ creates a lack of brightness about most lovers in comparison to Donne, whilst as he adds ‘Whose soul is sense’ Donne uses sibilance to continue the peaceful and gentle air of the poem in order to replicate his love, rather than to portray the love of the ‘Dull, sublunary lovers’. Donne’s ‘refin’d’ love (syntactically placed at the end of the line for further weight in describing the innate majesty of Donne’s love) connotes that of a diamond – a precious commodity in the 17th century – to describe the rich wealth of his love to his wife, but also its rarity, whilst Marxist literary theorists perceive this to be a reference to Donne’s ‘hardly attainable’ love, only truly expressible in the higher classes. The theme of escaping from mundane reality into an alternative, inspired universe is most prevalent in his films Time Bandits (1981), The Fisher King (1991), and Tideland (2005). In Time Bandits, escape is more physical than mental as inspired pre-teen Kevin leaves his mundane life and consumerism-oriented world for a taste of adventure. The Fisher King presents a much different type of escape- Parry is a man who witnesses the murder of his wife and falls into a catatonic state only to emerge as a man who abandons his old life, including memory of his late wife, in order to find the “Holy Grail,” a worthless trophy that he sees in a magazine. Joseph Macwan comes forward as a prophet of Dalits’ welfare in Gujarat with his Angaliyat (1987) which is a representation of the emerging genre of the Dalit novel. It criticizes systems of internal colonization that exist within the Hindu caste system. Today, Dalits are both asserting their identity and challenging a society that had earlier excluded them, by writing about their lives themselves. Through the protagonist Teeha, the novel succeeds in demystifying ‘dalitness’ and redefining the real freedom of his fellow people.
