...the system affect the resistance of the wire greatly. 8. What must happen for the wire’s resistance to be at its greatest? For the wire’s resistance to be at its greatest, the amount of particles and length of the system must be at its greatest. Also, the area of the system must be at its smallest. 9. What must happen for the wire’s resistance to be at its least? For the wire’s resistance to be at its least the area of the system must be the largest and the number of particles and length must be at its lowest. 10. Write a summary about the different relationships you looked at in the properties and measurements of a resistor. The relationships that I looked at were the relationships of the area of the system with the length of the system and the number of particles in the system. I found that when more particles were in the system, the resistance would be the highest when the area was the lowest. I also learned that when there were fewer particles in the system, the resistance would be at its lowest when the area was the largest. The length always matched with the number of particles, meaning that when the particles were at its highest, the length had to be at its highest to get the most resistance. And when the particles were at its lowest, the length had to be at its lowest to get the least resistance. I learned in these simulations that opposite amounts of area/particles/length worked together to achieve the highest or the lowest...

...difficult ethical questions asked in business and how corporations respond to those questions using moral philosophies. From the time when the short summary written in regards to the meaning and importance of the term ’responsible business’ in week 2, till today, I have explored various historical, moral, governance and economic aspects of business both domestically and internationally, proliferating my knowledge in regards to responsible commerce. I have come to understand the moral landscape or commercial enterprises which have helped me to appreciate the social and ethical dimensions of the business culture. The analysis of the James Hardie case and the Utilitarianism Theory depicts my knowledge growth. In doing so, I am able to now make more informed business decisions for the benefit of both myself and the wider society. JAMES HARDIE The history of asbestos in Australia and around the world is a history of cover up with companies choosing to ignore the dangers for as long as possible. Asbestos causes significant health problems, most notably lung cancer and mesothelioma, a type of cancer that affects the lining of the heart and lungs. Exposure to the fibres over a prolonged period – such as in the workplace – increases health risks significantly. The mining process was just the first stage of damaging contact with asbestos. The mineral was then manufactured into the myriad materials that helped build the houses and workplaces of post-war Australia. So with the first wave...

...p. 31 - PART 1: Summary 1. Force yourself to act enthusiastic, and you’ll become enthusiastic. Make a high and holy resolve that you will double the amount of enthusiasm that you have been putting into your work and into your life. If you carry out that resolve, you will probably double your income, and double your happiness. How can you begin? There is just one rule: To become enthusiastic, act enthusiastic. 2. Remember the one sentence uttered by Walter LeMar Talbot. “After all this business of selling narrows down to one thing, just one thing, seeing the people. Show me any man of ordinary ability who will go out and earnestly tell his story to four or five people every day, and I will show you a man who just can’t help making good!” 3. If you want to overcome fear and develop courage and self-confidence rapidly, join a good course in public speaking. Not just a lecture course. Join only a course where you make a talk at every meeting. When you lose your fear of speaking to an audience, you lose your fear of talking to individuals, no matter how big and important they are. 4. One of the greatest satisfactions in life comes from getting things done and knowing you have done them to the best of your ability. If you are having trouble getting your ability to think, and do things in the order of their importance, remember there is only on way: Take more time to think and do things in the order of their importance. Set aside one day as Self-organization...

...said it was “very good but not great”(Ebert). The problem with Ebert’s review is that he does not review the details of the movie, such as the acting or the set or soundtrack, but critiques the movie only as a whole after a long summary of the film. Gangs of New York was a great movie with a couple of fantastic performances by both Daniel Day-Lewis and Leonardo DiCaprio, and Roger Ebert’s review did not do it justice. The main problem that I have with Ebert’s review is that he ends with an entire paragraph that compares Gangs of New York with Scorsese’s other films such as GoodFellas and Casino. He says that he does “not think this film is in the first rank of his masterpieces”(Ebert). The problem with that kind of judgment is that Gangs of New York is a completely different kind of movie than Scorsese had ever done before. Ebert is essentially telling us that he likes gangster movies better than historical fiction. I personally do not think that Gangs of New York is one of the greatest movies ever, but I do believe it is a great movie and one of my personal favorites. Bill the Butcher, played by Daniel Day-Lewis, is, however, one of the greatest characters in movie history. Day-Lewis plays Bill perfectly, and his personality is so unique in the film. He is sinister and wicked but also witty and humorous, and he is crazy but smart enough to make others believe he is the voice of reason. Dicaprio’s character, Amsterdam, is also written and played very well. Ebert was right...

...Weekly Summary 6 HCS/514 April 21, 2014 Dr. Carol Young What ideas, readings, or discussions, or activities stood out to you? Why? Chapter 1 discussed some great information about the constant changes in healthcare and trends that were created. This chapter discusses how some trends was beneficial to impacting change throughout the organization. I was really intrigued by the discussion about organizational survival strategies. I did not realize that this is a crucial part of growth and development that an organization must be involved in. Chapter 2 discussed how change can impact the environment and productivity of the organization. Manager’s behavior and response were discussed in the readings. I enjoyed reading about the examples that were representative of how certain changes in healthcare was positive and still in existent today. The Y2K was a great example because even though I was young in college I understood the concept of the importance of being ready for this transition. This specific example showed me as a manager that facing critical issues and being proactive and establishing programs will lead to a successful process with change. What had the greatest impact on you? The greatest impact for me was learning how to be ready and flexible to the changing evolution in healthcare. Understanding that you have to expect good and bad changes but also predict that resistance will come with the new endeavor. As a manager being in control and setting aside...

...resistance training, http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/16937979, Pgs. 1 Summary A study was taken through a 10 week span to examine the effects of whey protein supplementation on muscular growth, anaerobic capacity, and muscle endurance during resistance training. Three random groups of supplements were assigned during the ten week span. Resistance training was four days a week, so a total of forty days of training. The main core lifts such as bench press and leg press were performed at an 80% max out for one repetition before and after the supplementation. There were significant increases in one rep maxes for bench press and leg press in all groups of supplementation throughout the ten week span. In this study, casein and whey protein was used in two different samples and then was combined for the last examination. The combined casein and whey protein had the greatest effect and showed the greatest results. It showed tremendous increases in fat-free mass after the ten weeks of heavy resistance training. This type of examination gives athletes and trainers a good example on what supplements can do for you when taken properly. If athletes are patient enough and can afford the supplements, they will be able to make significant gains in the weight room and in their all-around performance on the field, in the gym or wherever they prefer. Critique One positive thing I liked about the article was that they used three different groups of supplements and stated what they...

I deliberately quote only from my five favourite ethics books, click here to find out which they are - because you might like to buy one of them to supplement your study. Of course, it's important to quote the philosophers themselves in their own words - see my handouts, or for what academics say about them - see the key quotes section under the topic area of each moral theory. And if you'd like to blog on anything in the news send it to me - I'd be delighted to read it and - if it fulfils the criterion of good ethical thinking (!), post it!!!!! Utilitarianism is a normative, consequentialist, empirical philosophy which links the idea of a good action to one which promotes maximum pleasure or happiness, found by adding up costs and benefits (or pains and pleasures). It has two classic formulations...

...Does It Take to be a Great Leader My Journey Begins When I took the“30 Books in 30 Days Challenge”; I told myself to maximize this opportunity to learn something significant. Broadening one’s knowledge and learning from the best leadership books ever published is like a gift that landed on my lap. 1st day of my 30 day reading journey, I made a strategy with 1 end goal - to enter the minds of all the authors and get the best learnings and most importantly practice it. It wasn’t an easy task - the first few attempts on reading the summaries, I started to doze off at page 2. But I needed to finish not because of the challenge, but because it is an opportunity that should not pass me by. I decided to do it in a way which I will enjoy and love doing it. Since I liked formulas so much and doing it in excel I decided to come up with a “leadership matrix” based on the different books and from there have a formula for being a great leader. I made my summary of the summaries and counted how many times a particular quality or trait will be written by different authors. By this time I started to look forward to reading each summary. Before book # 1, I sat and looked back at the 17 years of my work life and started to ask myself what kind of a leader I am, to accept the brutal facts of how far am I from being a great leader. On the 26th book, finally came up with an equation which I felt and believed is the formula for being a great leader. ...

...their relationships. Especially if their relationships already have had problems for a long period of time, they will have extramarital affairs instead of solving the problems in their relationships since solving the problems is more difficult and sometimes people tend to do something to achieve happiness and avoid the difficulties in their lives. Theoretical Model In the project, I assigned the number of affairs as the dependent variable. Since individuals’ extramarital behavior has a close relationship with their married years and their happiness in marriage, I assigned the number of years married and the self-rating of marriage as the independent variables. I am going to discuss how the two factors affect the individuals’ number of extramarital activities. The estimation equation is as following: (〖Naffairs〗_i ) ̂ = 〖b_1 + b_2 Yrsmarr〗_i+ 〖b_3 Veryun〗_i+ 〖b_4 Somewhatun〗_i+b_5 〖Average〗_i+ 〖〖 b〗_6 Happier 〗_i , In the equation, 〖Naffairs〗_i is the number of extramarital affairs for individual i. 〖Yrsmarr〗_i is the number of years married for individual i. The independent variable of self-rating of marriage is a...

...“She was much too fond of Heathcliff. The greatest punishment we could invent for her was to keep her separate from him.” How far is Nelly’s comment a fair summary of the relationship between Catherine and Heathcliff and the problems it contains? In Emily Bronte’s Wuthering Heights, the theme of love is central; particularly the love between both Catherine and Heathcliff. Bronte’s illustration of the love between the two protagonists transgresses beyond the “normal”, romantic love previous authors, such as Jane Austen, would portray. Emily Bronte’s love uniting both Catherine and Heathcliff contains undeniable gothic conventions alongside the idea of idolised romance; she has created a love story which includes aspects of passion, lust and suffering. Nelly, commenting on the relationship between Catherine and Heathcliff, states “She was much too fond of Heathcliff. The greatest punishment we could invent for her was to keep her separate from him”, suggesting that the intense love they had for one another will forever be problematic. It is important here to focus on Nelly’s use of the adverb “too”, as it describes that Catherine’s love towards Heathcliff goes beyond average. When having to choose between Heathcliff and Edgar, Catherine concludes “I’ll try to break their hearts by breaking my own”. For Heathcliff, Catherine refuses to eat or sleep and also willingly exposes herself to a chill when she is feverish. Here, Catherine’s love towards Heathcliff has resulted in...

...Morey Thomas Edison the great inventor, once said this about all his inventions: “To invent something takes 1% inspiration, and 99% perspirations”. Many famous people took a lot of time and hard work to get to where they are. I personally believe it does take hard work to make a goal into reality. To begin with, with hard work it leads to money and success. For example, LeBron James had to go through a lot of obstacles and hard work to be the greatest basketball player in his time. LeBron was born in Akron, Ohio. LeBron mom gave birth to him at the age of sixteen and she raised him on her own because his father walked out on...

...Prayer: The Timeless Secret of High-Impact Leaders Book Critique Submitted by: Shannon J. Cockrell Student ID: L23353600 Submitted to: Dr. Jim O'Neill EVAN 670 Liberty Theological Seminary January 19, 2015 INTRODUCTION “Much prayer equals much power”, is a quote I’ve heard most my Christian adult life. Dr. Earley asks a thought-provoking question, “How would you rate your prayers?” (p.111) Truth be told, I wasn’t very powerful. Sure I prayed in the morning and at night, but I wasn’t seeing the results I saw that prayer brought about in the Scriptures. Prayer: The Timeless Secret Of High-Impact Leaders by Dr. Dave Earley is a life-transforming book. Earley has written a treatise on prayer that will be a classic for years to come. In this brief critique/review I will give an overview, summary of the chapters, critique, and application. SUMMARY “Leadership is influence…Prayer influences men by influencing God to influence them.” (Earley, x). Wow. What a powerful summary of his own book that Earlely gives us. This book is about influence and how prayer can better enable and position us to be better influences in the world. To lead better, we must pray better. Earley uses “Nine Prayer Disciplines of High-Impact Spiritual Leaders” to serve as the framework of his book. In chapter 1, entitled Value the Power of Prayer, Earley elaborates on the dynamic power that is found in prayer. Earley says, “If you want to maximize your impact, prioritize your...

...The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA), also called Obamacare or the Affordable Care Act, is a United States federal statute signed into law by President Barack Obama on March 23, 2010 (ObamaCare Summary: A Summary of Obama's Health Care Reform, 2013). Since the establishment of Medicaid and Medicare of 1965, Obamacare is one of the most significant expansions from the government and administrative overhaul of the U.S healthcare system. The purpose of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act is to raise the rate of health coverage of Americans, to modernize the delivery of health care services, and to reduce the overall costs of health care. This is to be done by restricting certain insurance company practices and providing tax credits and subsidies for individuals and businesses. Prior to the approval of the Obamacare Policy, the American health care industry was in deep calamity. Around 50 million people had no health insurance. Many people with pre-existing conditions were being disallowed from getting health insurance because there was a chance that certain companies would not profit from them. Along with that, companies were enabled to cancel their contract with a person for practically any reasons, even when the person was in greatest need of health...

To support the introduction and conclusion of the study, the body included: Background, Literature, Context of this study, Methodology, and the Discussion. A breakdown of each subtopic of this study will be discussed in this summary. I have taken several online classes prior to reading this study and I found it to be very supportive to my conclusive evaluation of the practice. Although this study was completed in 2009, I can relate that my prior experiences in online classes were parallel to the researcher’s findings. The introduction made the reader aware that there are challenges to online learning and that “the establishment of an online community is widely held as the most important prerequisite...

...Sharon S. Lacy EDLS 543; February 1, 2010 Summary and Reflection; Article Critique 1 “Intensive Word Study and Repeated Reading Improves Reading Skills for Two Students with Learning Disabilities” Summary According to the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD), repeated oral reading improves comprehension, as well as reading fluency and word recognition when used in a reading program. The National Reading Panel also reports that these three factors; comprehension, fluency, and vocabulary are important factors for making meaning. The article focuses on the use of word study to help build vocabulary and fluency. The author, reading specialist; Deborah Staudt, describes how she improved the reading skills of her learning disabled students in a south- central school in Pennsylvania by integrating word study with timed repeated reading. Since her students struggled with fluency, fluency was the main goal in addition to comprehension and word recognition. Students were encouraged to set goals for themselves when tracking their reading time. This practice was used to help motivate students and build their automaticity. The author states that students are more likely to forget words more so if they are unable to automatically recognize and read words on their instructional level. Staudt describes how she began her program with the introduction of weekly poems. She recorded the time it took her students to read their poem each day. She also used...
