...character in this book is Ed. Ed is a guy that can back up his words and he knows what to do when it comes to hard times. When he found the guys that stole the twenty thousand dollars he put up a fight. He was saying that he would fight them but they had guns. Finally when his pa came they took their guns and Ed fought one of the bad guys and he gave him a good whooping. I like that Ed is a tough guy. I also like that he shows not much fear in others. One last thing that I like about him is that he shows self confidence in himself and I think we all need that sense of self confidence. Three things I don’t care for is his attitude in some ways are that sometimes he gives up. Another thing is he might not have the courage to do some things that might be easy to us. Finally he shows his self- confidence sometimes, you might need to listen to others and trust what they say is true....

...What are the favorite symbols in your life? Two of the main characters in this book are Bobby and Nia. Together they have a baby named Feather. These are the symbols of their lives. The first symbol I remember is on Bobby's birthday. Nia brought him a red balloon and it symbolizes that she is pregnant. Bobby didn't know it at the time but she did. The red of the balloon could also symbolize the pain and the trouble that these two teenagers are going to run in to. Next, we see that after Bobby left feather to go play basketball with K-boy & JL, he stopped and realized what he was doing. He turned around and went back to take care of his baby but when he set the ball down it rolls away like his childhood rolling away. As Nia and Bobby go to the first prenatal doctor visit, Nia imagines she's on a field trip. This means she is getting ready to have a baby and they will be parents and they don't know whether to keep the baby or put it up for adoption. So her pretending to be on a field trip is symbolizing her loss of childhood....

...ACID RAIN Acid rain is a mixture of deposited material, both wet and dry, coming from the atmosphere containing excessive amount of nitric acid and sulfuric acids. The rain is acidic in nature because of the presence of pollutants coming from the smoke from the cars and industries. Acid rain can occur in form of rain, snow, fog or dry material that settle to earth. The level of Acidity is determined by calculating the pH level in the water drops. Normal rainwater is slightly acidic. The pH level of normal rainwater ranges between 5.3 and 6.0. The normal rainwater is acidic because the carbon dioxide and water react with each other and form carbonic acid. Carbonic acid is a very weak acid. When the pH level of rainwater falls below this range, it becomes acid rain (conserveegergyfuture.com, 2013). Acid rain affects plants directly and decreases the quality of soil and reduced fertility of the soil. The adverse effects of acid rain are severe where there is more concentration of sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxide (science.opposingviews, 2015). Acid rain has many negative effects, on lakes, streams, wetlands, and other aquatic environments. The primary reason for acid rains is air pollution. Acid rain is caused by large amount of pollutants it can be minimized by conserving energy and reducing pollution. I believe if we do not take preventive measures for acid rains future generation may face severe consequences (environment.nationalgeographic, 2015). Sulfur and Nitrogen are...

...English 1010 11 April 2015 The Effect Rain Has on Baseball There is no place in the world I would rather be than on a baseball field. Nothing is more exciting to me than when baseball season rolls around. With a new season of baseball comes a new season of weather, and with a new season of weather, comes rain. Rain can put a damper on baseball in many different ways. There is nothing more disheartening to a baseball player, coach, team, or even groundskeeper than rain. Peter Morris writes, “A groundskeeper always works with one eye to the heavens, knowing that rain could erase every trace of that day’s efforts and that flooding could obliterate the work of many weeks and months” (53). With this in mind, let us take a look at the effect rain has on Major League Baseball during baseball season. Rain has always had an effect on baseball, even as far back as 1845 when baseball began in the United States. Peter Morris writes that baseball teams, back then, were nearly bankrupt before they ever took the field. If rain set in, they were immediately plunged into debt (53). Team owners were profoundly aware of rain and would do anything feasible to steer clear of losing a game to rain. Peter Morris stated: The ever-present threat of flooding made club owners extremely reluctant to invest money in ballparks. So the burden fell on groundskeepers to create a ballpark that satisfied the demands of ballplayers, club owners, and spectators. At the same time, they were given...

...Introduction to Rain Gauge We all love to watch television! How far it is true that we all pay attention to the news, particularly, the weather forecast! Do we? Nah, the moment we hear the words weather forecast, our finger presses the remote button to change the programme; don’t you agree with me? It is true that we are interested to watch our favourite shows, movie, music, etc., but skip other important information. Generally, weather forecasts are given importance only during adverse conditions like heavy rain, storm, flood, etc. The fun part is even children and adolescents are eager to know about the weather changes during rainy seasons to avoid schools and colleges. The serious note is many don’t even know what the measuring unit of rainfall is; what is...

...Acid Rain Rain is one of the most essential ingredients for human and animal life. The water provided by rain allows all life on Earth to survive. Although rain is naturally acidic, it is being increasingly acidified by pollution from homes, factories, power stations and cars. The term used to describe this problem is “acid rain”. Acid rain hasn’t just occurred in the last twenty to thirty years. In fact a chemist named Robert Smith found rainfall in Manchester, U.K., to be very acidic. He suggested a link between acid rain and SO2 given off when coal was burnt by local factories. This was over 100 years ago. Acid rain is caused when pollutants from cars, homes, factories and power stations mix with atmospheric moisture. These pollutants may be carried in clouds for long distances before falling, which mean that forests and lakes far away from factories may be damaged by acid rain. Two of the major ingredients of acid rain are the chemicals sulphur dioxide [SO2] and nitrogen oxides [NOx]. When large quantities of these two particular chemicals come in contact with the atmosphere, they team up with moisture [H2O] to produce strong acids called sulphuric and nitric acid. These two acids which are formed in the atmosphere are very strong pollutants. Some air pollution as a matter of fact comes from natural sources, but most is human made. The burning of oil and coal by plants and factories, homes and cars, is the main source of chemicals that cause acid rain...

...| Acid Rain | .PrinceEcologyApril 3O, 2013 | | | Abstract Acid Rain is a mixture of wet deposition and dry deposition. Acid Rain is caused by a surplus of the chemicals sulfur dioxide and nitric oxide caused by air pollution. Air pollution comes from two main sources man made sources and natural sources. Man made sources come from combustion of coal used in power plants and exhaust pipes and natural sources come from volcanoes. They have many effects on the environment such as runoffs that lead chemicals into the streams and humans with respiratory illnesses that can worsen if the chemicals become too acidic. There are many ways to reduce acid rain such as cleaning exhaust pipes and using alternative energy sources. Acid rain measures a pH of about 5.3 Introduction: Acid rain is a mixture of dry and wet deposition from the atmosphere containing higher than normal amounts of nitric and sulfuric acids. The formation of acid rain result from both natural sources, such as volcanoes , and man-made sources, primarily emissions of sulfur dioxde and resulting from fossil fuel combustion. Acid rain occurs when these gases react in the atmosphere with water, oxygen, and other chemicals to form various acidic compounds. When sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides are released from power plants and other sources, the wind blows these compounds across the enviroment. There...

...September 2015 Symbol of Rain in A Farewell to Arms In A Farewell to Arms by Ernest Hemingway, Hemingway expresses the struggle of letting go through the theme of rain. It seems as if whenever there is the slightest bit of hope for Catherine and Henry’s relationship, it is destroyed by a disaster. In several instances, including the trip to Milan and Henry’s walk back to the hotel, rain haunts the characters and predicts misfortune. Throughout A Farewell to Arms, rain tends to destroy any happiness felt between Catherine and Henry, as it foreshadows tragedy to come. One night, while Catherine and Henry are enjoying their time together in Milan, Catherine confesses that she is frightened by the rain. Catherine asks Henry if he will always love her, even in the rain, because she feels that it is “hard on loving” (Hemingway 104). Because she claims to fear rain for the reason of seeing herself and Henry dead in it, it foreshadows her death to come. In this case, rain is symbolizing Catherine’s fear of commitment. She worries that with rain comes sadness and anger, which could cause Henry to leave her. To Catherine, rain is a barrier that can separate her from Henry if he does not truly love her. Henry’s walk back to the hotel in the rain symbolizes the distress that the weather has brought to both him and Catherine. In parts of A Farewell to Arms, where loneliness is felt, rain plays a significant role in the falling out of events. When Henry chooses to walk back...

...Acid Rain – Save the Environment Acid rain, or any other form of precipitation with high nitric and sulfuric acid levels is when the precipitation has a lower pH than natural unpolluted rainwater, 5.5 (National Geographic). Acid rain is the result of combustion of fossil fuels which releases acid chemicals into the air (Wysession, Michael). It is a problem in the world since it effects natural and man-made environments as well as other factors in negative ways. The unpolluted water that rains down on us is always slightly acidic with a pH of around 5.6. This is because the rainwater from the clouds react with the CO2 (Carbon Dioxide) that is in the air. It is in the air due to that we convert the oxygen that we inhale into CO2 inside of our bodies, which we later exhale. This results in a solution called Carbonic Acid. (Wysession, Michael) Water | + | Carbon Dioxide | | Carbonic Acid | H20 | + | CO2 | | H2CO3 | Rain counts as acid rain when it goes below the unpolluted rain pH, 5.6. The acidity of acid rain can be as low as 2.7 on the pH scale depending on the ratio of chemical acids and unpolluted rainwater. However, the usual pH of acid rain is around 4.0 which is more than 10 times more acidic than unpolluted rainwater. (Wysession, Michael) Acid rain can be caused by natural sources such as volcanoes. However, the main cause of acid rain is when the acidic chemicals sulfur dioxide (SO2) and nitrogen oxides (NOX) are released into the air by the combustion of...

...Does Acid Rain Influence on People’s Health? Acid Rain puts an effect on the ecosystem is a community of plants, animals and other organisms along with their environment including the air, water and soil. Everything in an ecosystem is connected. If something harms one part of an ecosystem – one species of plant or animal, the soil or the water – it can have an impact on everything else. What is Acid Rain? Acid rain results when sulfur dioxide (SO2) and nitrogen oxides (NOX) are emitted into the atmosphere and transported by wind and air currents. The SO2 and NOX react with water, oxygen and other chemicals to form sulfuric and nitric acids. Acid rain, or acid deposition, is a broad term that includes any form of precipitation with acidic components, such as sulfuric or nitric acid that fall...

...Acid rain- or acid deposition is rain that is made acidic (between pH 0 and pH 7) by chemical pollutants in the atmosphere, such as sulphur dioxide and nitrogen oxides that it becomes harmful to the environment. Acid rain is formed when the above mentioned chemicals react with water and oxygen to form solutions of nitric and sulphuric acid. Acid rain has two forms: dry deposition and wet deposition. The pollutants, sulphur dioxide and nitrogen oxides, enter the atmosphere as dry deposition. Dry deposition is the deposition of pollutants which come from the atmosphere and are absorbed by plants. When they react with the water and oxygen in the rain clouds, they become wet deposition. These acidic solutions may be spread across the atmosphere...

...Acid rain is defined according to the Dictionary as any form of precipitation whether it is snow, rain or sleet that has a high concentration of acid forming contaminates that come from coal smoke and chemical manufacturing that release sulfuric and nitric oxides. These such contaminates are released into the earth’s atmosphere and combine with water vapor. Acid rain is very harmful to the earth’s environment. In 1963 acid rain was discovered in the White Mountains of New Hampshire at the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest. At this experimental site they found that the PH level was 3.7 from the rain water collected, that means that it was 80 times more of an acidic level than what would be found in normal water. Some of causes of acid rain are both man made and some that are natural in nature. The causes of acid rain that are manmade are caused by the burning of fossil fuels such as coal. These fossil fuels are burned to generate electricity that powers our homes. When these fossil fuels are the winds pick up the sulfuric and nitric oxide contaminates over large areas of land and fall back to the surface as acid rain. The way that acid rain is found naturally is through the eruption of volcanoes, fires and vegetation that is rotting through decomposition which produce sulfur dioxide and lighting that produces nitrogen dioxide. The effect that acid rain has on the forest life can be absolutely devastating by making trees and other plant life more likely to...

...Course Date Acid Rain Introduction Acid rain, also called acid deposition refers to the deposition of wet or dry acidic materials from the atmosphere on the surface of the earth (Hess, Darrel, and McKnight 172). Although in most cases Acid deposition is associated with rainfall, sometimes the acidic pollutants in the atmosphere can fall with hail, snow and sleet. Acid rain occurs when the oxides of various compounds dissolve in water in the atmosphere. One of the compounds supplying acidic oxide include sulfur dioxide, which is usually produced as a result of natural means, for instance volcanic activities, burning of fossil fuel and extractions of metals. Formation of acid rain The major compounds that cause rain are the sulfur dioxide (SO2) and Nitrous Oxides (NOX) (Asimov 96). The production of these compounds result from the combustion of the fossil fuel. The combustion of the fossil fuel leads to the release of the oxide compounds into the atmosphere. Acid rain formation takes place in the atmosphere through chemical processes. One of the chemical processes is the reaction between water vapor, sunlight and oxide compounds such as sulfur dioxide (Hess, Darrel, and McKnight 172). This result in the formation of the acidic substances for instance, sulfuric acid. Also, nitric acid is formed through reaction between water vapor, sunlight and nitrous oxide (NOX) (Isabel 76). The chemical process in the atmosphere, which results in the formation of the acid rain takes hours or...
