“Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been?” A savior figure is kind and can be heroic, while a satanic figure is viewed mostly as an evil, hateful character. Throughout the story the reader will find hints or clues regarding which figure Arnold is displayed as. Joyce Carol Oates's short story presents him in two different ways, either a savior or satan. Arnold Friend is represented as a savior figure …show more content…
Connie talks about Arnold’s resemblance to Bob Dylan. “He is a folk rock singer-songwriter whose career began in the early 1960s with songs that chronicled social issues like war and civil rights” ( Kurkowski 3). Many of his listeners know of him as “Christ Revisited” because of the type of songs he writes. The author presents the two characters as being identical to each other. Arnold walks funky with one foot turned in and reader's view this as, “feet resemble the devil’s cloven hoofs” (Tierce & Crafton 1). The feet can resemble the devil, but the resemblance between Arnold and Bob is too obvious. It is clear from the author that he wanted the reader to find that connection between the two. When Connie gives a description of his facial features and overall appearance, the reader can begin to see the resemblance and create their own image as they read. Arnold’s appearance is described as, “long and hawk like nose” (Oates 2), “ big and white teeth” (Oates 2), “shaggy, shabby black hair that looked crazy as a wig” ( Oates 2), and the tone of his voice is described as, “fast, bright monotone…” (Oates 3). All of these descriptions describe Bob Dylan’s appearance as well, that is proving how alike the two look. Arnold is being displayed as a savior figure due to his resemblance to Bob Dylan. At fifteen, Connie is already introduced into adult sexuality. Through her experiences, she becomes

Where Are You Going Where Have You Been Literary Analysis Essay

...In Joyce Carol Oates story “Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been” a young woman is influenced by two strangers to leave her home and go with them. Though this appears to be a dangerous situation, there is evidence to support that Connie has fallen asleep. Connie’s mother says, “Her mind [is] filled with trashy dreams. (Oates 201).” Connie is having an “exotic” or “trashy” dream about being saved by an older man from her home life. Connie and her attacker have an unsettling connection, she is exhausted and has already fallen asleep once, and events take place that commonly occurs in people’s dreams all support the theory that Connie has actually fallen asleep. Connie first falls asleep outside of her house, immediately following her family’s...

Analysis Short Stories

...Analysis of Two Short Stories Laura Cutler Ashford University Introduction to Literature ENG125 Instructor Rivera March 2, 2015 Analysis of Two Short Stories A literary analysis is important to assist a reader in knowing how or why an author writes a particular piece of literature, whether it is a poem, short story, novel , play, informational piece, etc. and then have the ability to relate to it as an individual. In the short stories 'Sweat' and 'Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been' the characters are from different walks of life, they both encounter conflict of: individual versus self, individual versus individual and individual versus society; many literary devices create theses stories that include the author's point of view, the conflicts that arise throughout and the resolution that takes place in the endpoint of view, the conflicts that arise throughout and the resolution that takes place in the end. The theme to any piece of literature is the basis for the whole story, in 'Sweat' and 'Where are Going, Where Have You Been' the story is centered primarily on one individual and what they each go through to survive an abusive/violent situation. The theme involves the survival of an individual through: external and external factors, that include the influence of society and the issue of class; sexuality of a women and men and the men's masculinity; suffering and the struggles that deal with violence, both physical and mental; family and religion....

...“minions,” you need to read this handbook carefully. It explains everything you need to know. “English,” as you may know, is shorthand for “English Language Arts.” Being that we are in an Arts school, but one where academics must and always do come first, it is important that we approach the subject as what it is: an art form. How does one study the arts? What exactly do we do when we study drawing, sculpture, music, or dance? Well, anyone who has studied the arts will tell you that studying the arts essentially involves two things: • Learning about, and developing an awareness of and appreciation for, existing works of art in that particular form; • Developing the skills and techniques associated with the art form, in order to create our own works. In the case of language arts, much like any other art form, we will be studying existing works of art (i.e., reading books, stories and poems), and developing the skills to produce our own (i.e., writing). That’s what English Language Arts is. We will also be preparing ourselves for New York State’s Regents Comprehensive Examination in English, which we’ll all be taking in June. This two-day, six-hour, four-part exam requires no specific knowledge or content, but it does require the skills to listen, read, understand, respond, interpret, analyze, and of course, write. Everything we do in class is designed to develop those skills, and prepare your for that exam. So, So what does that mean to you, the student? It means we’re going to do...

English Essay Tips

...over essay writing, knowing that their essays account for a major portion of their score on the exam. Understandably, there is concern. They want to do well. I wish there were a magic formula to essay success, but there isn't. I have tried to come up with a essay planner that works, but the trouble with something like that is that it cannot possibly account for all the variables that exist when a particular student reads and responds to a passage. Therefore, this little essay is an attempt to steer my AP students towards a philosophy of essay writing instead of trying to have an approach or a system. Where to begin? A few thoughts on beginning any essay ________________________________________ Before all else, as writers we must have something to say. And if it's not important or significant, then it is not generally worth saying. From what I can tell, all passages used on AP tests have something to reveal to readers. Before we write one single word about imagery or diction, we MUST figure out what that something is. What does this author have to say to us about being human, about our shared experiences, about our fears, our sorrows, our victories? Find this and you will have something to say. This something is what I call the "So What" and without it, your essay will be meaningless. So, if there is a step one, it is this: read and understand the passage given. This understanding of the meaningful, of the So What, is what will allow you to write an insightful essay. When...

Once the writers are lucid about the technique of writing an essay and how to write an essay outline, the next step that they face up to is how to move toward a particular research paper topic. And what type of writing works best? Students often complain about a certain type of essay they have been assigned with. It seems to them that writing within essay type boundaries doesn’t allow them to think out the box, limits their potential. But writing a paper without any directions could be even more confusing than the class assignment you got. Do not think about the limitations as of the prison walls, but as of the walls in your room where you feel free to paint murals or change nothing whatsoever, simply being in control of it, being yourself. The Pointless Banishment of Sex Offenders

...September 23, 2015 Rhetorical Analysis essay In the article by The Editorial Board from The New York Times, “The Pointless Banishment of Sex Offenders”, the author goes into detail showing that it really is not necessary to banish all sex offenders. The Board goes further to talk about how residency Laws “drive tens of thousands of people to the fringes of society, forcing them to live in motels, out of cars or under bridges” (par 3). There is a huge variety of offenses that could classify someone as a sex offender, so the court system, and society should not group them into one large statistic. The author is very effective using multiple techniques including ethos, logos, and pathos to prove that not every one of these offenders should be banished from society. Ethos is the appeal to ethics, and it uses credible recourses to get to the point. In this editorial in particular, it is used to show that people we look up to are cracking down on sex offenders, and the idea is not, in fact, just an idea. “Lately, judges have been pushing back. So far in 2015, state supreme courts in California, Massachusetts and New York have struck down on residency laws” (par 4). The author uses judges as a reliable source to make the reader understand just how seriously these things are taken, so that they can see that it is unnecessary. Another technique the author uses that is very beneficial to the readers understanding of the concept is logos. This is a literary technique that appeals to logic;...

Analysis

...Campsall Here's how to write your best essay ever... Whatever the essay you have been asked to write, the key to making it as effective as it can be is to write it as a wellstructured and well-supported argument. You will find that an ‘argument’ essay is easier to plan, more fulfilling to write and for your teacher (or the examiner)... a pleasure to mark (and that’s no bad thing!!). It’s important to get one thing out of the way at the outset: an essay question has no ‘right’ answer. You can breathe easy on that one. It’s just not like that. This is English and we leave those kinds of ‘right answers’ to the mathematicians and scientists. An English essay is not an ‘answer’ in that way at all, rather, it’s an informed opinion; but, like all opinions, it’ll require explanation, argument and support. It requires you to argue your case. What’s the first thing you do when you set about starting an essay? Many people start by searching through the text on which their essay is based in the hope of finding suitable quotations to help ‘answer’ the essay question. Well, there’s no getting away from this basic process, but there are ways to make it altogether more efficient, useful and most importantly, more likely to earn a higher grade. More on this later. The Argument Essay The secret of a good essay? Write it as an argument for what you believe! What is there to argue about? Plenty! You’ll be arguing to support your point of view on the essay question - one that you’ve boldly stated...
