...Free downloading: the real culprit Stéphane V. English Research Paper December 2012 ------------------------------------------------- Contents Introduction 2 I) Surprisingly enough, Internet users should not be punished 3 II) The real culprits are illegal websites and software 5 III) Solutions to illegal download 6 Works cited 8 Is it right to punish people who illegally download films and music? ------------------------------------------------- Introduction S ince its creation in the 1990s, the Internet has been allowing the exchange of various kinds of data all around the world in the twinkling of an eye. Nowadays, this essential communication tool has become the best way to ‘share’ and download any kind of media such as films or music without paying for it. Despite the great opportunity that it can represent for many, it has its advantages and drawbacks. Indeed, since technology developed faster than expected, illegal downloading raises the issue of copyright. Isn’t the use of peer-to-peer software an abusive use of the Internet? Is it fair that singers, producers, actors or any artist are deprived of the benefits they deserve thanks to their work? Obviously not. But who should be the culprit? Public opinion would say that anyone who is doing something illegal has to be punished so illegal downloading should logically be severely penalized. But let us go a little further that this statement. I reckon that Internet users should not be punished...

...first PlayStation I will be comparing the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. Starting with features they both have, the ps3 and 360 have, of course, exclusive games that can only be played on that specific system. For example halo is for the 360 and god of war is for ps3. They both have an internet browser and apps; they are Wi-Fi enabled meaning they can detect wireless internet. Through Xbox live and PlayStation network, they allow you to play with friends and meet people all over the world (the name tells what system has what). Now the PS3 and the Xbox 360 are generally made for the same they can do different things that set them apart. The ps3 has a Xross media Bar (XMB) which allows you to chat with friends while pausing the action in-game. This comes in handy when people message you while you’re in a good game and do not want to interrupt it. While playing users can earn trophies which so how bad ass you are. The trophies are ranked as follows: Bronze, silver, gold and platinum which can only be attain when you achieve all other trophies for the game. Keep in mind that some trophies are easier to get than others. While in-game the XMB can be used to invite players to your gaming session know as parties where you can play with or against your friends. When you are not in in-game the XMB allows the users to invite others up to six to video chat or voice with each other and text chat with up to 16 other people this can also be done during gameplay. Gamers can enjoy the PlayStation...

...Betty Waltermire Critical Issues in Criminal Justice JUS-250 April 28, 2014 Internet Pirates Music, Movies and More Most people like listening to good music by the artists they enjoy listening to. Music is expensive when you are on a tight budget and the belt is as tight as it can go. You must choose between getting the newest CD and gasoline for your vehicle. Of course you would choose the gasoline to get back and forth to work or wherever you may have to drive. However you might be able to download the music from your computer. Downloading itself is not illegal but, if a person puts the song on the internet; copies, sells or distributes it for profit that is a crime. No matter what excuses are used it is all a cop out. It does not change the fact that copyrighted material or songs downloaded for profit is theft if it has not been paid for (Amazon). Chances are you may know someone who downloads music or movies from online and this in itself is not illegal. It is when friends start asking if they could get this or that downloaded and they will pay you for this music or movies. The Internet is running rampant with peer to peer (p2p) networks such as LimeWire, Bit Torrent and many others. These sites are where people copy music then put it on these sites for others to copy or use. The act of downloading something illegally falls under the Copyright Act of 1976, a Federal Statute that governs...

...[Is it ok to download movies and/or music without paying for it? Why or why not? Arguments for and against.] | Emilianos EllinasThe Business of Entertainment, Media and TechnologyOctober 16, 2013 | Debate about legality and appropriateness of downloading copyrighted material is nothing new to the world we live in. Since the advent of P2P technology with Napster in 1999, the Entertainment industry has struggled to grasp the magnitude of this emerging cultural phenomenon. Never again in human history was it as effortless, economical and fast to copy and distribute music and movies to the masses. A few decades back, the entertainment industry faced a similar predicament regarding music cassettes and VHS tapes. They swore in belief that these “parasitic” technologies would disrupt economic growth forever. Yet again, history proved them utterly wrong, as they bigger than ever. The main arguments branch into three lines of defense against downloading: (i) how the artists make a living; (ii) the Entertainment industry’s growth and affluence; (iii) the claim “without copyright, there will be no culture” . Nowadays, artists expect to be paid, and remuneration is their incentive to stay creative and continue working, because at the end of the day this is how they pay their bills. Does this support the viewpoint that this will make the industry shrink, and less creative content will be available for our enjoyment? Every year the industry announces a higher number in lost profits...

...I have selected option #1: Becoming Deviant: A Computer Pirate Tells His Story. This story is about a good college student by the name of Steve who took a dark turn by participating in deviant behavior. Steve was committing a deviant act when he engaged in computer piracy, he even admitted it himself. The way I can explain Steve’s deviant act is by using the Functionalist Theories (Livesey & Lawson, 2009). This theory comes from three basic ideas: consensus, conformity and control. When it comes to consensus, in our society we all know “bootlegging” movies and downloading music for free is wrong, he violated a social norm. Conformity doesn’t come natural it is something that needs cooperation and orderliness. Steve isn’t naturally-deviant according to the story, didn’t plan on going to college and start being deviant, he knew he was doing the wrong thing and lost control of his actions. Control is last of the three basic idea and it was clear in this story that Steve lost control, he was too consumed in the high of feeling powerful. Steve was downloading movies from the internet for fun and then got carried away, he started to sell the movies and it wasn’t for the money, it was for the power and respect. The activity...

...Download speed The first thing we’re going to take a look at when comparing Usenet vs Torrent, is the the download speed. With torrent (P2P) downloading, you need to rely on other persons to seed so you can download faster. Therefore your downloading speed will be restricted by the amount of seeders. If there are few seeders you’re going to download slower. With Usenet, your downloading speed isn’t restricted by the amount of seeders and lechers. There’s no restriction. The downloading speed in only limited by your broadband. So if you have a fast internet, you’re going to download movies and shows quick. Usenet speeds are as fast as the end users internet connection. File availability Usenet vs Torerent, which one have the best file availability? The first movies and songs appeared on Usenet even before the birth of Napster & BitTorrent. Even today, the majority of content from top site uploaders gets on Usenet first, and then spread to the P2P communities. This is the way online distribution works, and there is no indication that this will change any time soon. Content uploaded to Usenet have a close to definite lifespan. Therefore Usenet have a clear advantage over torrents in terms of file availability. Content on Usenet have a retention time of around 900 days and it’s still increasing. Files uploaded to BitTorrent relies on seeders, over time content on BitTorrent will die. Seed ratio How can we really compare Usenet vs Torrents, when Usenet don’t...

...Web or Mobile System Paper: Netflix Abstract For the best free application for personal use is Netflix. The app itself is free but you have to pay for usage as far as purchasing goes. Very versatile you can use it on a mobile device, gaming console, or computer (i.e. Laptop, tablet, desktop). It’s good for people who can’t afford cable, don’t have time to catch their favorite shows, and enjoy watching old and new movies. There are other companies out there such as Hulu, Voodoo, and Viewster to name a few. I personally prefer Netflix because of the advertisement it received on my Xbox One. Netflix For the “at home” or the “on the go” movie lover, Netflix is a great app. You can download it on your mobile device, pc, and gaming console. It uses one account for multiple devices. The best thing for me is that your spouse and child can have their own profile. Netflix has been around for a long time and it is still running strong even though the competition is steadily increasing. This app is affordable, user friendly, and constantly upgrading to meet the needs of its users. Netflix is very affordable for even the lowest of budgets. I have found that Netflix is cheaper than going to the movies and paying for cable and overall, renting movies. Netflix allows the customer to set up one account with multiple profiles, for multiple devices at one low price. Although the movies and TV shows are a little slow coming to Netflix you are still able to watch some of your childhood...

...Moodle course site. PASSAGE 1 Downloading Movies from the Internet for Free is Wrong! Adapted from: “Downloading music from the internet” by Dr. Asher Meir from The Jewish Ethicist. http://www.besr.org/ethicist/downloadmusic.html It is wrong to download copyright protected movies from the Internet for free using peer-to-peer (P2P) file-sharing using systems like BitTorrent. Movies are similar to other public goods like bridges or roads. They cost a lot to create, but once they're around many people can enjoy them at low cost. Just as the government supports bridges by giving builders a concession to collect large tolls, even though your trip costs them a minimal amount, so it supports movie production by granting a copyright which enables the film maker and producer to collect from viewers. Downloading a copyright protected movie for free from the Internet is like making a detour around the toll booth. Even if you don't get a ticket, you've taken a free ride on someone else's investment. Our Sages viewed paying tolls as a prime example of the citizen's duty to obey the law, and emphasized the importance of avoiding even the appearance of evading this duty. And while it is true that if everybody downloads copyright protected movies for free from the internet, eventually the copyright may be impossible to defend, it's not ethical to join the mob storming the artist's rights. This is comparable to the case where everybody takes a shortcut through a private field...

...mission statement is “To be the global leader in rentable home entertainment by providing outstanding service, selection, convenience and value.” Blockbuster is an American based chain of retail stores renting DVD, Blu Ray, and video games. They have over 9,000 locations in the US and 25 other countries worldwide. It is headquartered in the Renaissance Tower located in Dallas, Texas. The first store was opened in Dallas, Texas 1985 by David Cook. Cook had started a company called Cook Data Services Inc. in 1982 selling software to Texas’s oil and gas industries.[i] When the industry went flat Cook was searching for another source of revenue. His wife a movie fan suggested getting into the movie rental business. At the time rental stores were small, specialized, and inefficient. These stores were mainly family oriented stores that provided few former big hit movies. Cook recognized if they displayed the movies, provided a large former big hits selection, and set up a computerized system he could provide a higher...

...has experienced declining sales, with only 7% increases over the last three years, as compared to Amazon’s 32% (Brush, 2012). Amazon’s increased sales are driven by the introduction of the Kindle Fire and their larger inventory of digital books. The difference in price between Barnes and Noble’s Nook and Amazon’s Kindle Fire are significant, with Kindle Fire being considerably cheaper for a comparable product. Until recently, Amazon was ahead of Barnes & Noble, in offering digital downloads of movies and music. However, announced as New! on our Barnes & Noble website, we have now partnered with Netflix and Marvel to offer streaming movies and comic books. This will increase our connection to the younger generation. While our products are desired and used by all varieties and ages on the spectrum, my suggestion would be to target the college student and younger genres. When we begin to segment the public, we must begin with Generation Y. Their buying power and sheer numbers can not be ignored. They are a tech-savvy group raised on phones, computers, and hand held devices. With their numbers comparing to the Baby Boom generation, they saturate the buying market. In looking to the future, two other generations that should not be overlooked are Generation Z and AO (Always-On-The-Go). These two generations exhibit the need for instant...

...Is the free sharing of copyrighted material on the internet a morally acceptable action? Can we apply different moral philosophies to such a modern problem? In recent history, with the advent of peer-to-peer sharing programs and the free availability of many different types of media on the internet, the morality of the sharing of copyrighted material has come into question. In order to gain understanding on issue, we can apply several universal moral theories, including the Kantian, Utilitarian, and Rights Ethics philosophies. There are many users of the internet today, and a majority of them participate in file-sharing via the use of a wide variety of peer-to-peer (P2P) networks. These people believe that what they are doing is not wrong, but rather one of their rights as consumers of media. In contrast to this, many people of the movie and music industries believe that their creative works are protected property and that file sharing takes away from the benefits that they receive from those works. By having the consumer purchase the media, it gives the creator both money to create more work and the added affirmation to generate more creations. This situation has arisen due to several factors; these factors include technological advances that provide the ability for free sharing of media, the opinions of several creators driving the arguments against sharing, and the wide popularity of the internet. Napster was one of the first widely used free-sharing networks. In June 1999...

...Download from Yahoo! Update 2014/05/18: Yahoo! has switch to a new design for their movie pages. The underlying download mechanism hasn’t changed. Once you find the content_id (sometimes called the media_id), you’ll just need to follow the instructions below. I’ll try and find sometime later this week to update this tutorial. Update 2013/04/06: Finally found time to explain how to download using their new system. Do be warned though, the instructions can get rather complicated and is not for the weak-minded. Update 2012/12/23: Yahoo! has once again changed their API and the way to get the direct download URL this time is a lot more complicated. Hopefully I will find some time to update this tutorial shortly. Update 2012/01/21: Yahoo! has revamped their site and I’ve generated a quick tutorial on how to download HD trailers using their new site. The instructions are a bit rough, so if you need clarification, please feel free to ask in the comments area. This tutorial was meant to teach you how to download HD Trailers from Yahoo! Movies. Where to find the trailers: Yahoo! no longer has a dedicated page for HD trailers and they don’t easily distinguish which videos have HD and which don’t. You can visit their movie trailers page or find the movie you want and click on the Trailers tab. What to do once you’ve picked a trailer: Once you’ve picked a trailer, you’ll have to make sure you have a ‘video’ URL and not a ‘trailers’ URL. For example, the latest Carrie trailer can...
