For example, they would look at your GPA and most of the student's would have to do an SAT to check what classes does he or she needs for the career that the student is looking for. Beres tells us his experience, he was one out of 11,000 out of 34,000 students to join the New York University freshman class (79). That means that they would accept people that are smarter than others. His friend didn’t had a good GPA so he seems to be a lazy student. It is hard to apply now a...

...Kelsey Moore Nov 11, 2013 Eng 101 Looking into Where the Sidewalk Ends Have you ever asked questions, or thought about what is behind the scenes. Why does it seems like only children use their imagination anymore? I think the poem, Where the Sidewalk Ends by Shel Silverstein is saying that exact thing. This poem is talking about a place that is peaceful, with no problems. But not just anyone can go to this place, and only the people with the eye to see it realize it is there. The first two line is the poem stats, “ There is a place where the sidewalk ends, and before the street begins,” That right there makes me think automatically this might be about something magical, or something where you have to think outside of the obvious and use your imagination. Which it seems like it gets more and more difficult for people to do these days. To me everything is a yes or a no. Or a straight forward answer this poem is already in the first two lines making me think that maybe there is more out there then what we see to a natural eye, you may just have to look outside of the big picture and see the small pictures. Line thee and four make me think a little bit, the state, “and there the grass grows soft and white, and there the sun burns crimson bright.” This changes up my thought because the grass growing soft and white makes me think it is almost like snow. The grass at this place is not the normal weird color green and itchy like we normally have in our...

...Home: What is it to You? Home. A simple word spoken by many every day. Home. A place to some, a state of mind to others. Home. Somewhere that many are running to, and even more are running from. Home. What is it, and where can it be found? Home. It lies within us all, but sometimes is very hard to find. Home. A place sometimes hard to remember, and often difficult to forget. Home. Webster’s defines home as one’s place of residence. This seems to be a very simple definition of something that is seemingly much more complex. It seems that many have a hard time describing home and an even more difficult time defining it. The world has many quotes about home, some positive such as “Home is where the heart is”, or “Home is where you hang your hat”. Others not so much, as Thomas Wolfe stated, “You can’t go home again.” It can be surmised that Deborah McDowell felt all of these things about home. McDowell’s life raises the question; just because you leave somewhere does it cease to be home? Many people own a home, a house with which they reside, and in time it may become their “home”, the place they identify with emotionally. But does anywhere truly ever replace that first “home”, is it ever truly forgotten? In Deborah McDowell’s case it seems the answer is a resounding “no”. McDowell tries to suppress her thoughts of home, but even the simplest things can bring those memories rushing back. It seems that when trying to forget home it acts as a bully who will not...

... dealing with the loss of her father. Not only has she lost her father, but also her brother, who died as a teenager 23 years ago, and her mom, who died just a few months after. Annie lives alone now, and is having a tough time. With no family of her own to depend on, she is literally on her own, all the way up in distant Northern Ireland. The plot of the short story involves Annie meeting her father after his death, through different occasions. These supernatural occasions are divided into sections throughout the story, which is reflective of the distinctive composition. Instead of a coherent text, which normally characterizes the short story, there are different sections each consisting of a supernatural experience, which Annie, the narrator, experiences. The story jumps in time, from one occasion to another, which gives the story a special touch of its own. Some on the text is told in streams of consciousness, and because of this, the chronological order has been unregulated. It starts in media res, in the middle of an important event. The first time Annie sees her father after his death, is while showering, two weeks after his funeral. As he is standing with his back to her, with the tap running, Annie thinks to herself; "His things were all where he'd...

In the short stories “The Tell-Tale Heart” “The Sniper” and “The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas” all share a similar theme “Everyone has the potential for evil. The theme for The Tell-Tale Heart is the truth always comes out. This quote is relevant because in the story the man who goes on to kill the old man end up showing the police officers where the body was hidden. “Villains!” I shrieked “dissemble no more!
