The present paper reports on 6 new species of jumping spiders (Chinattus taiwanensis, Euophrys albopalpalis, Euophrys bulbus, Pancorius tai- wanensis, Neon zonatus, and Spartaeus ellipticus) collected from pitfall traps established in Hui-Sun Experimental Forest Station, Taiwan. Detailed morphological characteristics are given. Except for Pancorius, all other genera are reported from Taiwan for the 1st time. http://www.sinica.edu.tw/zool/zoolstud/41.4/403.pdf Key words: Chinattus, Euophrys, Pancorius, Neon, Spartaeus. Jumping spiders of the family Salticidae are the most specious taxa in the Araneae, and cur- rently a total of 510 genera and more than 4600 species have been documented (Platnick 1998). However, the diversity of jumping spiders in Taiwan is poorly understood. Until very recently, only 18 species from 10 genera had been described, almost all of which were published in the 19th century (Chen 1996). Despite the fact that the diversity...

Even though the whole piece was in black and white since it came from a linocut, the red and blue watercolors were the only colors in the piece. The red and blue colors surround the man’s eyes while woman’s eyes, lips, and a line that is at the left side of her head were painted red. The way that the colors were shaped in geometric shapes almost made them look like Native Americans preparing for a battle. Based on the color’s mass, my eyes mainly directed at the colors of the male figure since there were two colors involved and...

...past 22 years People magazine has composed a list of the 50 most beautiful people. The list typically includes movie and television stars, musicians, British royalty, models, and television personalities. Every year the magazine crowns the year’s “most beautiful” and features them on the cover. Of the 22 most beautiful 19 have been women and out of the 19 women 16 have been White. This signals to People’s readers that beautiful means White and everything else does not equate beauty. However, this is not unique to People or even magazines like it, but instead represents a larger trend that is present in all forms of Western popular culture. In the various mediums of popular culture, ideologies about female beauty are exceedingly prevalent and constantly managed and reproduced. These ideologies carry with them the notion that in order to obtain ideal female beauty one must be very thin, young, have long hair, and wear expensive or revealing clothing (Stern, 2004). In addition to this there is also a raced definition of beauty, which predominates Western popular culture and dictates that White women with light hair and eye color can only attain true beauty. By looking closely at fashion magazines, television shows, movies and advertisements it is easy to see how Asian, Black and Latina women are underrepresented and misrepresented; and more importantly beauty is not typically associated with these and other nonwhite races. The power and importance of popular culture in today’s society...

...Brittany Peters Instructor Wenrich Eng. 121 7 June 2015 Research Narrative “Okay, so I get to wake up today and have another day he doesn’t.”- Dave Grohl, band member of Nirvana What would music have been like in the 1990s without Kurt Cobain? Or maybe the question to ask is, “What would music be like today if Kurt Cobain was alive?” The grunge movement was brought to life by the front man of the band Nirvana, Kurt Cobain (Kurt and Courtney). He was what most believed to be an iconic man in the 1990s for the music genre known as alternative rock/grunge. Kurt Cobain passed away on April 5th, 1994, in his home, when he was only 27 years old (“April 05”). He recently started a family with his wife Courtney Love, who was also a musician in a band called Hole (Kurt and Courtney). Kurt was in and out of rehabilitation centers for his drug addiction, and soon before his death had, what people considered at the time, an accidental overdose in Rome. The day his corpse was found an electrician reports his findings. The police and fire department arrive. Pictures are taken of the scene, and then handed to detectives to enhance the report of the incident that took place on the street of Lake Washington Boulevard. As news spreads of the musician’s tragedy fans gather at his house and a memorial service is performed in his honor (Kurt and Courtney). I now tell you the story of how and when Kurt Donald Cobain’s body was found. An electrician, Gary Smith, from the company Veca Electric...

...Eboni Goodrich Research Paper 1 Project 3; (400 hours) February 17th, 2014 Tennessee Academy of Cosmetology Michele Byers didn't have any skin problems. She just wanted to do something nice for herself as she approached her 50th birthday. Byers went to an at-home esthetician for microdermabrasion, a nonsurgical procedure that polishes away dead skin. After a session, bumps started to appear on Byers' face. Her cheeks were covered in indentations. "It looked like a railroad track on my forehead and nose," says Byers of Castro Valley, Calif. "Here I was trying to do something nice for myself and I ended up looking worse than I ever had in my life." Contrary to popular belief, darker skin is not tougher; in fact, while extra melanin does have its benefits - sun protection and slowed signs of aging - it makes the skin more sensitive and vulnerable to injury. The side effects are common for people with darker skin. Most skin care is only marketed to white people (lacking tone), not even Asians, Hispanics and darker-skinned Europeans. Education of the skin is geared to white skin, and it's still not considered to be a prestigious career here in the United States as with beauty advisers in Europe. If the skin is darker it is prone to scarring and hyper-pigmentation, so we have to be more careful with skin of color. Latin, Asian, Indian, Mediterranean or African-American descents skin requires special skin care. Even acne or laser hair removal should be handled differently on...

Fitzgerald uses personification and the colors: green, red, white, yellow, blue, grey, and purple to symbolize the truth and principles within and about the American dream. The colors mentioned the most and used to enforce a greater meaning in the Great Gatsby are: green, yellow, red, blue, grey and white. Each color is a crucial detail in the book relating to intentions and foreboding. Throughout the history of literature colors have been used as motif. *add quote about color motifs in literature* Red commonly means power, danger, passion and love. Yellow is associated...

...This paper is going to be about the area that I just moved to Jacksonville, North Carolina and about how diverse the population around me is. This paper will also talk about the different races and issues that come about with having such diverse amounts of cultures in the community that I live in. This paper will also talk about other issues that come up in my community that might not happen in other communities being that there are two military bases in the city that I live in, along with many others in the surrounding area. The community that I am living in currently is somewhat a different kind of community. I have only been stationed here with my husband and children for three months and I am learning many new things about the area. Not only does this community have many different cultures and races but people from all over the country. The reason that Jacksonville, North Carolina has such a wide range of cultures is partially because this is a town that is full of military men and women. I live within ten miles of Camp Lejeune Marine Corps base and Marine Corps Air Station New River. There are many different kinds of people in my community. There are many who do look a lot like me, and there are others who don’t. There are many women that are military wives out here where I live and they are around the same ages as myself and also have children. I do not have trouble finding people much like myself out here. There is also one thing most of us have in common with...

...Aimée L. Arcoraci-Davies Professor Maria Evangelatou HAVC 155 Research Paper 4 June 2013 Cleopatra in Cosmetics: Iconography and the Journey to Attaining Flawless Beauty How has Cleopatra been used as an apparatus manipulated through capitalist- consumerism under the guise of attaining ultimate beauty? How has the exoticization and romanticism of beauty products, such as Palmolive soap, result in the products becoming more appealing to female consumers? This essay examines the problematic ideology of Cleopatra as the beautiful queen with the “flawless” complexion used in beauty advertisements of the 1920s addressed towards the post-World War I “modern woman” as a source of sociopolitical embodied power to entice men. This essay also explores concepts of femininity, modernity, and ideals of female beauty that have been constructed through a historically patriarchal framework which involves emphasizing the ‘seductive power’ of women, and revolves around the obsession for preserving a youthful girlish beauty and perpetuating women’s place in the home as the ‘pretty little wife’, in juxtaposition with George Bernard Shaw’s ‘pretty little queen’ caricature of Cleopatra. By invalidating or distorting her power, these expectations and gender based stereotypes impact society today in the same ways by advertising flawless skin with no visible pores or wrinkles as one of the many unrealistic sociocultural standards for females. For thousands of years, Cleopatra has been used as a...
