...Pastor Joe Carter from New Hope Baptist Church in Newark, which Houston attended growing up, recalled how she would come sing at some Easter Sunday services even after she'd made it big. Others recalled fondly how Houston would often return to the area, treating neighbors and fellow church members like family. "It's almost like she never left," said Sharpe James, a former Newark mayor who organized concerts for a young Houston as well as her mother, gospel singer Cissy Houston. "Here's a superstar, but you could find her in Newark, at the church. She was everywhere and everything to everyone." Pride tied to her enormous talents, and her fame, are also part of her appeal in the Garden State. Gov. Chris Christie told reporters Tuesday that he believes Houston belongs in the same class as Frank Sinatra, Count Basie and Bruce Springsteen as far as musical luminaries hailing from New Jersey. That's particularly true at the Whitney E. Houston Academy of Creative and Performing Arts, a school for pre-kindergarten through eighth grade in East Orange, a few blocks from where the singer spent much of her childhood with her parents and two brothers. Tearful students and staff remembered Houston -- a frequent visitor since the school was named in her honor about 15 years ago -- at a memorial event Monday. In addition to speeches and the release of white balloons, her historic rendition of the national anthem before Super Bowl XXV was replayed. Students told CNN affiliate WCBS afterward...

...Andrea Dawkins Hum186: Media Influences on America Usually when you think about music the first thing that comes to mind is entertainment. Music is not just bound by entertainment; music can also be inspirational, motivational, and educational. Inspirational music compels the listener to perform an activity or at least make the listener believe in themselves. Such songs as When you believe by Mariah Carey and Whitney Houston and Never would of made it by Marvin Sapp provided excellent examples of inspirational, for they give the listener hope where there might not be any. Motivational music has the ability to lift us up, make us smile, encourage, motivate, and teach us valuable life lessons. Such songs as I feel good by James Brown and I like to move it move it by Reel 2 Reel motivate people to get into that desired mood to be able to perform certain tasks, such as work or any other extra-curricular activity. Last but not least music has dramatically affected the way we educate ourselves. Educational music is both entertaining and informative. Research shows that children learn better through music than through almost any other medium. Through music many listeners are able to comprehend as well as remember what is trying to be taught better. Some educational pieces would include The ABCs, Bunny Song (How to tie your shoe), and Why do leaves change colors. These songs provide children with a familiar and comfortable way of learning. In closing, music has multiple purposes;...

...models, but their influences are not always good. Their actions are viewed in the everyday public by media for abuse and overdosing.Celebrities do not make good role models because they act inappropriately, do drugs, and break laws. Often, celebrities are seen in the media behaving inappropriately. Miley Cyrus has been seen twerking on a teddy bear during a music award ceremony. Amanda Bynes has caught a dog on fire and twerked on a police officer. Justin Beiber egged a house. When in the public eye, celebrities do not act appropriately, and this is not what people need to look at as a mentor. Celebrities are often caught using drugs. Alex Rodriguez was recently caught using steroids while participating in the Major League. Whitney Houston overdosed on cocaine a few years ago before a concert. Amanda Bynes is a known current cocaine user. Using drugs is not what our society needs to look for in a role model. When celebrities think they have immunity they break laws and go to jail. Ray Rice was accused of beating his wife. Adrian Peterson was also accused of abusing his son. A Penn State football coach was found guilty of molesting some of his players. A quarterback at Florida State was accused of molesting a peer. Many big figures have been accused of misconduct, and everyone sees these horrible things. In conclusion, because celebrities act inappropriately, do drugs, and break laws, they do not make good role models. As children grow up with these celebrities...

...Hurricane Katrina was one of the five deadliest and most destructive hurricanes in United States History. There were at least 1833 deaths and 80 billion in damages. I was not personally affected by Hurricane Katrina. However, I remember seeing news coverage on the tragedy. I remember seeing all the destruction that the hurricane had caused, seeing people trying to hold on to whatever they could. I was in middle school at the time and several students who were survivors of the tragedy were move to my class. This one student in particular I remember him telling me how his family had lost everything. He was worried how him and his five siblings and his mother were going to make it; they were in a new place and they knew no one. He shared with me that even though he was happy that him and his family were safe he missed New Orleans and wanted to go back. After several months I did not see him anymore. ...My Biography On “Whitney Elizabeth Houston” (Nippy) By: Ashanna D. Lee Date: 2/10/14 (rough drafts) 2/17/14 (final drafts) Subject: Library Class Instructor: Ms. Bee Whitney Elizabeth Houston, known to many as Nippy, was born on Aug. 9, 1963 in Newark, New Jersey. Houston began singing at a young age in her church choir within her hometown and released her debut album at the age of (22). During this time, she scored three #1 singles, delivered four more #1 titles, and earned her first Grammy. When Whitney married singer Bobby Brown in 1992, her career got off track. She made a major comeback, which probably would have been one of many if not for her early departure, with one of her #1 titles: “I Look to You”. Houston died on Feb. 11, 2012. Early Life/ Influences Whitney Houston, born on Aug. 9, 1963 in Newark, New Jersey, almost seemed destined from birth to become a singer. Her mother Cissy Houston, her cousin Dionne Warwick, and her godmother Aretha Franklin are all legendary figures in American Gospel and Soul Music. Whitney’s mother Cissy was the choir’s Minister at New Hope Baptist Church, and it was there that young Whitney got her start. By the time she turned fifteen, Whitney was often performing with her mother and trying to get a record deal of her own. Around the same time, she was discovered by a photographer who was amazed by her natural beauty. She soon became a well-known teenage model and one of the first women to appear on the cover of Seventeen...

...D. Exploration III. Settings A. Forest B. On a gravel or dirt road IV. Symbolism A. Roads B. Nature V. Conclusion The Other Road Not Taken Speaking on roads that are not taken can literally be analyzed on a personal stance. Before I get into the poem I would just like to take the time to make this a reality. We all know the singer Whitney Houston passed away a few weeks ago. Her life can be analyzed as being two roads and which one she should have taken. Whitney grew up in a church in New Jersey where she began singing in the church choir. Her career took off in 1987 officially. Fast forward a few years and the good girl we knew seemed to crumble up before our eyes. Whitney married Bobby Brown and had a daughter Bobbi Kristina. Whitney and Bobby’s relationship soon became a downhill ride over powered by drugs and alcohol. We thought by looking at her, that her career was over. She proved us wrong by coming back more faith driven than ever before and with a new attitude. You see in “The Road Not Taken”, you have a decision to make as to which road you will pave for your life. Whitney chose her road and is at peace with it. Let us analyze the poem to see which road we will take. In the following paper, Robert Frost’s “The Road Not Taken”, will be broken up to show the theme, settings, and symbolism. We have choices in life that we must make. The choices that we have to make may consist of things like the direction to take, which...

...Howard Hewett, Al Green, Peabo Bryson, and many other balladeers were all famous for wooing females on stage. But, there was only one who could hold an all-female only concert; Theodore Pendergrass. The world came to know him as, Teddy Pendergrass or more affectionately “Teddy Bear”. He first became popular when singing with Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes in the 70’s. He was badly injured in an automobile accident and paralyzed from waist down. He lived 25 years after his injury; which is not normally consistent with an injury of this type. He later died of complications of a colon cancer surgery. I would like to discuss his triumphs of accusations of drug abuse, struggling to become an international artist, and dealing with being a paraplegic. Come with me as I take a walk down memory lane of Balladeer; Teddy Pendergrass. Pendergrass was born Theodore DeReese Pendergrass in Philadelphia on March 26, 1950. He was an only child. Pendergrass’s mom had six miscarriages before giving birth to him; all of them were boys. His parents were Jesse Pendergrass and Ida Geraldine Epps. Pendergrass parents separated when he was very young. Jessie Pendergrass was killed later; Teddy was only 12 years old. Pendergrass was a student at Thomas Edison High; which was an all-boys school. Before dropping out in the 11th grade; he was a member of the Edison Mastersingers. He decided to pursue a career in the music industry after dropping out. His first gig was a drummer with...

...SHOULD BOBBY BROWN PULL PLUG ON DAUGHTER? The moral issue I wanted to discuss was from a current event in national news. The late Whitney Houston’s daughter (Bobbi Brown) is currently on life support. Brown’s cousin (Jerod Brown) stated that “doctors don’t see any hope for her condition to change”. According to Fox News, Bobbi Kristina Brown was found face-down unresponsive in the bathtub on Jan 31 (Fox News, 2015). She has been in the hospital in medically induced coma ever since. As we know, her mother (singer Whitney Houston), was found dead in a bathtub February 11, 2012. As a father of three beautiful daughters, this was very near and dear to me because I can only imagine the pain and concern that Bobbi Kristina’s father (singer Bobby Brown) could be going through. What would I do if I was in his situation? Would I want my own daughter to have a fighting chance to live until there was no chance of life? Or would not want my daughter to have to go through the state of being a “vegetable” and take her off life support. This is a moral issue for many Americans who have loved one on life support. According to Thirty-Mile Zone (TMZ), “Bobby Brown is adamant ... he doesn't want to take his daughter Bobbi Kristina off life support because he believes in God-driven miracles.” (TMZ, 2015). I am a proponent of Brown’s decision to keep his daughter on life support and putting his trust in GOD to work a miracle. Being A Christian myself, we are taught that...

...Annotated Bbliography of Whitney Houston Ammons, Kevin, and Nancy Bacon. Good Girl, Bad Girl: An Insider's Biography of Whitney Houston. Secaucus, NJ: Carol Publ. Group, 1996. Print. This was an unauthorized autobiography of Whitney Houston by Kevin Ammons who observed Whitney Houston’s life while dating her publicist Regina Brown. He observed a glamorous woman who let success turn her into a very troubled woman. In the autobiography Ammons talked about how Whitney had a close friend by the name of Robyn Crawford and that her mother, Cissy Houston felt that it was “unnatural” for the two women to be so close. Ammons also mentions how upset Robyn would become when Whitney gained male attention. Robyn was upset when Bobby Brown sent Whitney four hundred roses, and at the 1991 Super Bowl where Whitney sung the national anthem and M.C. Hammer appeared, him and Whitney went off by themselves, talking and laughing. Ammons also includes in this autobiography that his girlfriend at the time stated to him that one of the condition in working for Whitney was not to bring up Robyn. These statements mentioned in Ammons autobiography tends to make the media and readers believe that Whitney Houston had lesbian affairs with Robyn Crawford, and this is what caused her to develop a drug problem that soon resulted in an early death. ...“And the winner is…………….Amy Doherty”. I could not believe I had just won the All-Ireland Art competition. I had put so much work and effort into my portrait and it paid off. It was a painting of Whitney Houston. I think the facial features were really defined and my use of colour brought it to life. Everyday in my art class I would do small parts of the portrait as I wanted to take my time and not rush it. My art teacher gave me tips about shadowing and blending in and anything else I needed help with. I would really like to thank her for all her help during the competition. The winner was to be announced at the Ramada Encore Hotel in Letterkenny. When we arrived there, it was overcrowded with students, parents and teachers from other schools and youthreaches around Ireland. When everyone was seated and the winner was announced, I was so shocked and happy to hear my name being called out. I was told to come up to the stage and collect my prize. I didn’t know what to expect. The man then handed me a cheque for one thousand euro and a five hundred euro voucher for paint and art supplies for the centre. I was so overwhelmed with joy, that I was stuck for words. When the prize-giver asked me did I want to say anything I just stared at him for a minute in awe... I then said thanks to everyone who helped me and to Youthreach for supplying the materials. Afterwards I went out to a nice restaurant with my family to celebrate my win. I am so glad I took part in the competition as...

...Truth is based from the word of God. A close examination of God’s Word shows us that humans aer made in the image of God with the capacity to seek and to know truth. Christian philosopher Gordon Clark puts it this way, “God has fashioned both the mind and the world so that they harmonize (Braley, 172). John 14:6 says “I am the way the truth and the Life”. Truth comes from within. Every person knows right from wrong and every person knows what a lie is and what the truth is. Truth in others is built on trust. Once you learn to trust someone you can tell if they are telling the truth or not. Some people, like Descarte, believe that anything that cannot be known with absolute certainty must be considered false until its truth is proven through observation, reason and experimentation (Dunn 126). Dewey believed that since problems of living are constantly changing, the instrument (or knowledge) for dealing with them has to change also. As a result, “truths” are tentative beliefs that change as the needs of the individuals in society change. People believe what leaders tell them, what society tells them and what their parents tell them. People are looking for truth and will believe what people tell them until it can no longer be proven. For the Christian educator as for Thomas Aquinas, any truth discovered in God’s world is God’s truth, so it is proper to give a prominent place in a Christian curriculum to the study of the natural sciences...

...fundraiser to allow our children to play at the park when us adults need a break. They will probably close these parks from Saturday to Monday. These days are two of the days that children are not in school. What about our younger children not old enough for school. Many take their children to the park in the morning time, while the school-age children are at school. “Why do we need to save money at a city park, anyway?” City parks are free for the children to play anytime during the day. I think we need to protest the city council’s decision. “Don’t you think so?” Next on discussion today is that Whitney Houston has died. They found her body in a full bathtub at a motel. At this moment, we believe she may have hit her head or fell asleep and drowned. She will be dearly missed by many fans. I will publish these stories on Facebook. They will be viewed by the community more than they would in the newspaper. I will also broadcast it...

SpaceX Business Model 7. SpaceX Business Level Strategy 8. Conclusions I. Background SpaceX or Space Exploration Technologies Corporation is a space transport services company headquartered in Hawthorne, California. It was founded in 2002 by former PayPal entrepreneur and Tesla Motors CEO Elon Musk. SpaceX was founded with the goal of reducing space transportation costs and enabling the colonization of Mars. It has developed the Falcon 1 and Falcon 9 launch vehicles, both of which were designed from conception to eventually become reusable. SpaceX also developed the Dragon spacecraft, which are flown into orbit by the Falcon 9 launch vehicle, initially transporting cargo and later planned to carry humans to the International Space Station and other destinations.[1] By 2012, SpaceX had over 40 launches on its manifest representing about $4 billion in contract revenue—with many of those contracts already making progress payments to SpaceX—with both commercial and government (NASA/DOD) customers. As of December 2013, SpaceX has a total of 50 future launches under contract, two-thirds of them are for commercial customers. SpaceX's low launch prices, especially for communication satellites flying to geostationary orbit, have resulted in market pressure on...
