“You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view... Until you climb inside of his skin and walk around in it- Atticus Finch.” (Lee,###) Atticus Finch was a man who never said an ill spoken word in his life. He had an vast understanding of people and was metaphorically able to “climb inside of someone's skin and walk around in it.” He proves that there is such a thing as walking in someone else's shoes. Whenever people come up to him and insult him he always puts himself in their place and justifies their actions. He also is the only man in maycomb to be known as “the same in his house as he is on the public streets.” This shows that he is a man of incredibly high moral values. Heroism

...term "heroism" has been applied to those who have braved physical danger to defend a cause or protect others. Byt one of the most feared dangers people face is that of disapproval by their family, peers, or community. Sometimes acting courageously requires someone to speak out at the risk of such rejection. We should consider those who do so true heroes. Should heroes be defined as people who say what they think when we ourselves lack the courage to say it? Plan and write an essay blah blah blah, etc. A hero can be anyone- someone who fights crime, one who stands up for another, and maybe even one who silently defends. In my opinion, and I’m sure many would agree, a hero is one who defends, protects, and stands up for what he/she believes in. Whether they have braved physical danger or not, heroes come in all different types, include those who protect with words over actions. Therefore, a hero should also be defined as one who says what he/she thinks when others lack the courage. One of the finest examples of this is the ever famous black woman Rosa Parks, who refused to give up her seat to a white man on a Montgomery bus in the times of racial segregation. Parks did what many other blacks were unable to do and stood up for her beliefs , that a black woman is no different than a white woman. She was spurned by the entire community of whites, yet she stuck to her beliefs and brought about change. To this day, she is hailed as a hero, even though she did not brave physical...

Black and White Are Not Just Colors

...Upon your first viewing, you may not feel like it has relevance in your life today. You may be of the opinion that the world that Atticus Finch and Tom Robinson lived in is a far cry from our world today, but current events reflect otherwise. Most of us can remember the famous words spoken during the Los Angeles riots in 1992 by Rodney King, “Can’t we all just get along?”, and we all can never forget where we were the moment the towers were struck on September 11, 2001. Very different in their own rights, each of these events was caused by prejudice or discrimination. While the top notch acting is unsurpassed in our world of CGI, 3D, and High Definition movie making, no breathtaking stunts, superheroes, fantastic cliffhangers, or 3D glasses are required to watch To Kill a Mockingbird. Gregory Peck, the actor who portrayed Atticus Finch, still stands 49 years since its original release, the greatest movie hero of the 20th century (American Film Institute, 4 June 2003). The story itself is one of triumph and defeat, loss and gain, and the lengths that a man of great character will go to in order to make sure everyone is treated as an equal no matter the color of their skin. The movie touches on the rape trial of a local African American named Tom Robinson and his court appointed attorney Atticus Finch in 1930’s Alabama. The character Atticus...

"To Kill a Mockingbird" Teaching Tolerance Through Empathy

... America in the mid 1950’s and 1960’s was undergoing a profound social metamorphosis. Events such as, in 1954, the Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka, Kansas, with the Supreme Court ruling public school segregation illegal, which many believe sparked the civil rights era, in 1956 Rosa Parks refuses to give up her seat on a bus to a white man, “precipitating the Montgomery bus boycott, led by Martin Luther King Jr.” (To Kill a Mockingbird: Civil Rights Era, 2012), in 1957 federal troops were sent to Little rock Arkansas to protect nine African American students who were going white high school, per the court ordered desegregation of school, were challenging and for some forcing the way in which Americans lived, their beliefs and their treatment of African Americans that had been indoctrinated into their consciousness from the time they were born and many did not understand why this treatment was inappropriate, prejudice and unconstitutional. For some these changes were viewed as not an intrusion or criticism of their way of life but as a positive, needed social awakening but for others it only provoked a fierce need to protect their prejudicial point of view resulting violence and inhuman acts of injustice toward African Americans. During this period a young woman by the name of Harper Lee...

Innocence to Experience

...Essay By Kori Duperron “That’s what it takes to be a hero, a little gem of innocence inside you that makes you want to believe that there still exists a right and wrong, that decency will somehow triumph in the end.” Harper Lee's novel “To Kill a Mockingbird” shows how courage can be shown in different ways and that even the most subtle act of courage makes a difference. According to Atticus Finch, an honest lawyer in Harper Lee's novel "To Kill a Mockingbird" teaches the children that courage can be portrayed as both physical bravery and strength, but fighting for what is right regardless of whether you win or lose takes more strength in character, and that is ultimately more courageous. Many characters show real courage in Maycomb, such as Scout, Atticus, and Tom Robinson. Courage is shown in different ways. Early in the novel, Scout illustrates the courage she is full with. On her first day of school, Scout acts as a leader for the entire class and takes the duty of informing Miss Caroline of Walter Cunningham's situation. Miss Caroline had just scolded Scout for her ability to read, however, Scout still feels the class is in need of leadership. This is courageous because most children at her age would fear speaking to the teacher is such a bold fashion. A very good example of courage is when Atticus asked Scout not to fight anymore. "When I committed myself to a policy of cowardice. Word got around that Scout Finch wouldn't fight anymore, her daddy wouldn't let her." The...
