In the novel "The Things They Carried," by Tim O' Brien explains the difficulties and horrific scenes that each individual, mostly soldiers, had to experience in The Vietnam War. They present to the audience their challenges and also how they overcame them by including "the things they carried." The character Kiowa carried many things throughout his journey, in which many believed they did not belong in, such as his bible and his faith.
Kiowa's most significant physical object that he carried was his bible, this bible defines Kiowa as a person and his character. As stated in chapter one, "Kiowa, a devout baptist, carried an illustrated New Testament..." Kiowa is immensely dedicated to his religion. In the first chapter, it mentioned that Kiowa was devoted into his religion and that plays a huge rule in his life. The faith and hope that Kiowa includes in his soul throughout the war, helps him proceed with this horrific event. His faith assists Kiowa into staying in the war. With many violence occurring near Kiowa, his belief allows him to believe in his religion and hope for the best. Kiowa carries religion along with him, because it is the only thing that will help him advance mentally, physiologically.His religion will keep Kiowa stable throughout the war. He carries his faith and bible to comfort him from the war and the affects of the war. Carrying these things allows the character to recall their life before the war and to hope that their lives will return to normal.
