When a disaster brings death, is there always someone at fault? There are times when the disaster was pure misfortune. However, there are also times when the disaster was brought by a single person. Romeo and Juliet, a famous play by the just as famous William Shakespeare, hosts a plethora of deaths, and there is only one person to blame. The one who brought so much death and destruction was someone who brought the play into existence in the first place; that person is none other than Romeo himself for going to the fateful party and bringing Juliet’s, and many others’, demises.
To begin with, Romeo was the person who brought himself, and his companions, to the party, in which he met Juliet. Romeo was never invited to the party; Romeo lied to a servingman who could not read and said that he was on the guest list. As a result, the servingman told him that his “master is the great rich Capulet, and if [Romeo] be not of the house of Montagues, [he] pray come and crush a cup of wine” (1.2.85-88). Not only was Romeo not invited: he, and his family, was despised by the hosts of the party. At the party, Romeo met Juliet and fell in love, despite knowing that “[his] life is [his] foe’s debt” (1.5.132). The two families hated each other, …show more content…
This is a misconception. If one says that Friar Laurence is at fault for failing to deliver his letter, than Friar John is at fault because he was the one sent to deliver said letter. However, Friar John’s path to Mantua was blocked by a closed city riddled with disease. From that, Friar John is not at fault, but the town is. Even more complex, the town had no power to prevent a plague back in this era of humanity, so the town is not at fault, but the disease. The disease is a cause of nature, which officially makes nobody at fault. Thus, it is impossible for Friar Laurence to be at

Who To Blame In Shakespeare's Romeo And Juliet

...Romeo and Juliet, one of Shakespeare’s most notable works in history, depicts an infamous love story that ended in tragedy - specifically, with both of them committing suicide. When their bodies were discovered, several questions arose. Who was to blame for this tragedy? Or, was there really anyone to blame? The Prince, appalled by what had happened, had this to say: “Some shall be pardoned, and some punished” (Romeo and Juliet. 5.3.322). Although it is not directly said who he is referring to, the events throughout the play paint a clear picture of whom he holds accountable and why. This includes the Capulet’s and Montague’s endless feud, the Friar’s plan, and his own hesitation to act. Although there are several people that were responsible for the deaths of Romeo and Juliet, two that stand out were the Capulets and the Montagues -notably, their hatred towards one another. Their feud, one that lasted throughout...

Who To Blame In Shakespeare's Romeo And Juliet

...If I had to pick someone to blame for the deaths of Romeo and Juliet it would be Romeo. Romeo should shoulder the burden of most of the blame because he is the character that makes things happen within the story; like when he disregarded the friar’s warnings about marring Juliet too quickly, or when he let Mercutio die then killed Tybalt, or many other things but I will focus on what I believe shows why he is the main person to blame. Romeo’s terrible judgement and listening skills can be seen throughout the story; but the biggest example of this has to be when Romeo goes to tell the friar about wanting to be wedded to Juliet and he warns Romeo about the marriage (2.3.65-70); Romeo even though hearing these words married Juliet anyway which...

Free Will In Shakespeare's Romeo And Juliet

...‘Romeo and Juliet’ is a tragic love story written by William Shakespeare about two young star crossed lovers who live in Verona, Italy in the Middle Ages. One of the most important issues that these young loves come across quite often is that of choice. The real question is whether the characters have the ability to choose what they do or is it fate that decides it for them. The chorus introduces in the opening prologue that Romeo and Juliet are “star-crossed” and “death-marked”, and by stating this, Shakespeare gives us the climax of the play right away. In Shakespeare’s ‘Romeo and Juliet’, it is not fate, but desperate and impulsive actions that bring about the downfall and the unfortunate ending of both Romeo and Juliet. In the Victorian Era, fate was known as the continuance of events that are out of human control, and determined by a supernatural power. By no means was the demise of Romeo and Juliet out their control. It happened because of the choices they themselves make....

Romeo and Juliet

...Romeo and Juliet: Who’s to Blame? What started as one of the greatest love stories, turned into a tragic struggle, in Shakespeare's, Romeo and Juliet. Romeo and Juliet realize that being together wont be auk with their feuding families, but they are selfish with their love and have no idea the consequences that will unfold. Romeo and Juliet had help with their tragic demise. Tybalt, Lord Capulet and Friar Lawrence also played a part in their lives. Juliet;s haughty cousin Tybalt is largely to blame for the lover’s untimely parting. Tybalt is always trying to start fights with Romeo or anybody who shares the last name Montague, and at last one of these fights goes to far and he ends up killing Mercutio. Also Tybalt hates Romeo, and would to anything to have him be gone, and while this doesn’t have immediate effect on Romeo and Juliet, in the end Tybalt dies by Romeo’s hand which in turn gets Romeo banished. Tybalt shows his hate for Romeo when at the ball he says, “I will withdraw; but this intrusion shall/Now seeming sweet, convert to bitter gall” (I.v.100-101). What Tybalt means by this is that he wont kill Romeo then, at the ball, but he will in the end kill him. Tybalt plays a major part in why Romeo and Juliet kill themselves in the end, he unintentionally, but would have liked it, separated them with his death. Lord Capulet also indirectly caused Romeo and his daughters pain, and eventual death. Lord Capulet tries to marry juliet to Paris when she is already married...
