Importance of Skin Screenings When a person thinks of Health Care Screenings what is the first thing they think about? The average person would start to think about the different types of Cancer Screenings, but here is one screening that over half of the world doesn’t even begin to think about let alone partake in. That is Skin cancer screenings, which one in five people will get a type of skin cancer in their lifetime and over half of them will not even know it (SCF, 2015). Skin Cancer Screenings Skin cancer screenings promote early detection and improve treatment, but if you do not know what to look for it does no good. Quality Improvement Intervention “Quality Improvement is available for Nurses who are responsible for ensuring the improvement of quality care of our patients and their safety.” (NS, 2015). An intervention for quality improvement would be using strategies to improve skin cancer screening such as increasing cancer awareness, targeting high-risk patient populations, and advocating primary care providers to conduct these types of screenings.
Information Management Intervention An intervention for information management would be actually getting the information of skin cancer out there to the public. There are three types of skin cancer: basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and melanoma. Basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma are the non-melanoma skin cancers, which are the most common type of skin cancer in the United States and there are 3.5 million cases per year according to the National Cancer Institute. Melanoma is the least common of the three, but the most lethal. More than 68,000 people are diagnosed with Melanoma each year (Siegel V, 2012). Just think about the dramatic increase of cases we could have if we, as nurse, just try to get the information out there more and to get our patients to take it
