LEARNING AT ASHWORTH

iii

INTRODUCTION
Welcome!
Welcome to Ashworth College!

And welcome to your very first Ashworth lesson: Learning at Ashworth. Why are we starting you with this lesson? First—and most importantly—we want to make sure you have the foundation you need to be successful with your studies. The most basic foundation for success is knowledge of both what and how to study. Most people think “studying” involves reading pages from a textbook or lesson. That’s only partially true. The word study is a verb—that means it’s a process. Studying does involve reading. However, successful studying involves much more than that. It involves active engagement with the material. In this unit, we’ll share techniques you can use to learn more easily—and remember more. Second, your home base for your studies is the Ashworth College website. This website is a learning management system. That’s just a fancy name for a central online location where you’ll find the majority of your learning resources and activities. The website is where you’ll go to find the information and

Your e-structor has also embedded comments [in bold and in brackets] throughout your essay. Thank you for choosing Smarthinking's OWL; best wishes with revising your paper! *Strengths of the essay: Thanh , thank you for submitting your assignment for review. I am Ann B., your writing tutor. First, I want to point out a strength I noted when I read your paper. This sentence in the introduction presents a question and then answers it: College athletes are supposed to be the best of the best on that level, so why do college athletes not get paid? The question sets up the argument nicely for the reader! Now let’s move on to some areas that need revision. Content Development: A direct quotation like this one is not a good topic or first sentence: McCourt states “The athletes are ones who put in hours of practice and training” ( Evan Rosenfeld and Scarlett McCourt). Your audience may not understand why this quoted passage is important. The topic sentence should present a main point about athletes being paid in your own words. The first point is the hectic schedule. Can you write a topic sentence that introduces this point? I note that the second body paragraph does have a topic sentence introducing a point from the thesis in your own words: Another reason to why college athletes should get paid is they need money for expenses...

But false views, if supported by some evidence, do little harm. (Charles Darwin, The Descent of Man and Selection in Relation to Sex, 1871)2 Since its publication in 1995, Daniel Goleman’s Emotional Intelligence: Why It Can Matter More than IQ has been the flagship of a fleet of books that Goleman has authored or co-authored, and the foundation text of a world-wide movement that claims that what has been universally regarded as intelligence is merely one type of intelligence – cognitive intelligence – and is not as important as another type of intelligence – emotional intelligence. As the dust jacket of Emotional Intelligence proclaims, it is, “The groundbreaking book that redefines what it means to be smart.” In this document, I will analyze every book and article that Goleman adduced to denigrate the importance of cognitive intelligence, and even more, the tests that measure it. I will demonstrate that not one of them says what Goleman claims it says, and many say the opposite.3 No one denies that emotional strengths and social abilities often contribute to social and occupational success. But Goleman knew two crucial facts about them that he did not tell his readers. Recycling Proposal

...environment (Kaufman, 2009). Because of the repercussions of wastefulness, recycling is essential. As a student at Pierce College I care about my school’s environmental impact. Pierce College should implement a systematic recycling program that separates paper, plastic, and non-recyclable waste. Programs that recycle materials such as paper, glass, plastic, and metal are one way to decrease the amount of resources (especially non-renewable ones) needed to produce a given amount of products. What is less obvious is whether such programs save more money than they cost, or more energy than they consume. Recycling programs can in fact be worth their cost, but only if the programs are run efficiently, with sufficient education for those involved. In Washington State 60 to 80 percent of waste is recoverable through recycling (Recycling Saves Money). If Pierce College enforced a recycling program and reduced their waste by just 60 percent they could save thousands of dollars each year by avoiding landfill costs. The only costs to account for are recycling bins and time spent educating staff and students on the program. For the program to be as effective as possible people need to be educated. I recommend that an email be sent out to all staff and students informing them on the new recycling program and how it works. There should also be a new page created on the Pierce College website dedicated to the recycling program. A total budget of $14,210 is enough to cover the cost of a new webpage...

...Career Research Paper I have designed this assignment as a step by step guide to walk my students through the research process. Of course, you may adjust it as you feel is necessary according to the level of students you are working with. This project explains in detail everything they need to research, as well as, giving them real world insight into what to expect in a career in terms of education, job duties and responsibilities and income. I begin by having them take a reality check quiz on the Jump Start Coalition website. This little quiz helps them determine how much money they will need to earn in order to live the lifestyle they would like to have. This income amount in turn helps open their eyes to the type of job necessary to achieve that income and what amount of education is involved. It was a real wake up call for many of my students. In this package I have also included a grading rubric for the project and a list of possible career choices for their assignment. Student Instructions You will be writing a research paper on a career chosen from the attached list. Think carefully about which career you chose to research. Read through these directions and the requirements for this assignment BEFORE making your choice. Materials needed for this project - ---note cards (preferably 3x5 lined) ---folder with pockets to keep all research materials in ---access to internet and reference books A. Different Education Between China and America

...Different Education Between China And America Have you ever thought about the question: that why Chinese students need to sit straight and being silent during classes? But American students can have the class outside, sitting on the green grass and enjoying the blue sky and sunshine. And there are many reports or news segments talking about the differences between Chinese and American education. As the result, I want to compare and contrast the two different systems between China and America. In China, the classroom is a place that is very serious and formal. What you should do is just sit in the classroom and listen to your teacher, taking your notes silently. But during the class in America, it is viable. Students in America’s classroom do not just listen. They can discuss to their teacher or classmates. And Chinese students have full day classes. And they do not have the chance to change the time of their studying and they must abide by the arrangement from school. AS Chinese student Yue Peizhou described his typical day, which Schuylkill Valley students were surprised to hear is significantly longer than their day. “They usually get up at 6 a.m. and get to school about 7 a.m., he said, they have classes and then a two-hour lunch, where sometimes we nap. Then we have more classes, and usually we stay at school doing homework until 10 p.m.” (Connor, Erinn no page) Chinese students have much homework to do. They do not have the time to relax or do something they like. China...

Nelson Mandela said, “Education is the most powerful weapon you can use to change the world”. Achieving a college education will allow me to be more marketable and increase my current standard of living for myself and my family. Through education I will be able to change my life and only accept what’s best for me and my family when making career decisions. Having some mentors in my life has taught me about living life to the fullest - about love, laughter, working hard through self-motivation and having the drive to be successful. A college education is important to having a self-sustainable and fulfilling life. “Education is our passport to the future, for tomorrow belongs to the people who prepare for it today.” ― Malcolm X. Earning a college education is a clear-cut investment in a long-term sustainable future. At present, college education is a minimum requirement for securing a job in various companies and industries. Paying College Athletes

...November 2, 2015 Professor Brian Royce ENGL 111-05C-C1 Ivy Tech Community College Fort Wayne, Indiana 46835 Dear Professor Royce- I am writing this cover letter to you as a part of the Informative essay assignment for English 111. I choose to write about the current debate over whether college athletes should be paid for their time and effort while playing their chosen sport at colleges and universities across America. I received only one peer review on Blackboard, and was underwhelmed by the response that I received. Jairret Boyce was the only classmate that responded to my essay, and in his peer review, he merely agreed that I did everything well. This was not very helpful in the completion of my final draft for this assignment. The only helpful feedback that I received was from you, with the notes that you made on my first draft, with the most important information being that my thesis statement would not work because I presented it in the form of a question. I made the proper changes to my thesis statement to make sure that it shows the two different sides to the debate that I writing about to inform my audience. After receiving the grade for my essay in writing project two, I wanted to make sure that I did a better job with my Works Cited page. I went to the library, and was shown Noodle tools, and made sure to use that resource to make sure I completed a quality Works Cited page for this assignment. I am looking forward to completing Writing Project four,...

Mla Format

...Connections Education® students should use Modern Language Association (MLA) style for citing sources and formatting. MLA style is commonly used in many middle and high schools as well as in colleges and universities across the country. The MLA publishes the MLA Handbook for Writers of Research Papers. This is a very useful book, as it goes into great depth explaining the steps for writing a paper. The book is available at most bookstores, and your local library likely has copies. If you run into an issue, such as citing a source that is not covered in this guide, it is best to find the proper way of citing your source by consulting the MLA Handbook or by asking your teacher. This guide covers the basics for formatting and citing sources. However, always follow the specific guidelines presented by your teacher. For instance, if you want to incorporate pictures or other images into your paper, ask your teacher about the best way to do this. Depending on your teacher’s preference, images could be included within the body of the paper or in an appendix. Formatting Your Paper 1 Here are some basic steps for setting up your paper. 1. Paper Size and Margins – Your paper should be set to 8.5 inches by 11 inches. This is standard letter format. Your page margins should be set at 1 inch on all sides. To set your margins: Select the Page Layout tab, and then select the Margins drop-down menu. Set the top, bottom, left, and right margins at 1 inch. To set your paper size: Select Page Layout...

...Academic Motivation of College Athletes & the Influence of Athletic Scholarships Abstract The purpose of this research was to examine whether scholarship play a role in academic success by identifying the motivation of the students toward their classes and the influences of being an athlete. The identification was investigated using surveys and interviews. Most college athletes made it clear that their motivation academically comes from their concern about a successful future. A successful future in this place is having a good job, earn good money and have a successful business. As if they were to fail in sports, they would still be able to make a good life with their records in academic fields. So their first priority is a good academic status. The results also identified how being an athlete could hurt them academically. Introduction I decided to do this research because I’m interested in getting a scholarship to play basketball and I would like to know how things work and could possibly affect my academic performances at that point. Scholarship athletes are expected to work hard and dedicate more time than the walk-in or try-out players because they need to maintain their good performance to keep their scholarships. I’m studying in Thailand as a 10th grader. I started playing basketball a couple years ago. At first I was just playing for fun and exercise, but since I was asked to join my varsity team, I started to like the game more. My love to game developed...
