Brutus Joins the Conspiracy The biggest debate of Julius Caesar is most likely whether Brutus should have joined the conspiracy. Brutus was right to collaborate in the conspiracy for multiple reasons. No one could have known how Caesar would handle the responsibility of the power in which comes with being king. Brutus believed strongly in the people of Rome as well as the Roman republic system. Similarly, he considered himself an expert judge of character and a loyal man making him a worthy leader of the assassination of Caesar. Caesar may have turned against the people who helped him after he became king, such as Brutus. Brutus had known of kings before in which had abused their power. There was no way of knowing whether Caesar would do this or not. Shakespeare uses an analogy of someone climbing a ladder to describe Caesars climb to power(II,i,22-27). It is true that they could not know for sure that Caesar would react in the ways they suspected he would once gaining power. On the other hand, if they would have waited to take action things may have turned out much differently. Caesar would have had too much time to gain control and become unstoppable. Word of the conspiracy was already spreading like wildfire. Waiting would have been much too risky. Consequently, Caesar could have had them all executed if he got word of the conspiracy. Others may say Caesar would never have turned against his people and that he was a loyal Roman as well. Just before Caesar came to power he proved this claim false. Julius killed one of his good friends, Pompey, and defeated his army on his climb to power. Pompey was not only a friend of his, but the leader of Rome. This proves that Brutus’s loyalty to Rome was greater and that Caesar has in the past made the decision to abuse his power as well as leave behind the people who helped him get where he
