How exactly did Rome “fall?” I’m going to cover 3 of the main reasons that caused Rome to fall. For example, how they grew weak from invasions, the army, poor emperors, and so on through many of the years. To begin with, the Roman army grew weaker. The Roman army grew lazy negligence and laziness changed their training techniques. They also refused to wear armor, as it says in document b, “So our soldiers fought the Goths without and protection for chest and head and were often beaten by archers. Although there were many disasters, which lead to the loss of great cities, no one tried to restore breastplates and helmets to the infantry.” Because of this, archers were able to kill them easily, so they were too afraid to go into war because they did not want to die. What I mean by this is an earthquake, and a disease that came from southern Asia. if you take a look at document f, it states, “ In the second year of the reign of Valens (366 CE) … the Roman world was shaken by a violent and destructive earthquake …. The shores of the Mediterranean were left dry by the sudden retreat of the sea … but the tide soon returned with the weight of an immense [flood] which was severely felt on the coasts of Sicily … Greece, and of Egypt.” Also in document f is says, “More important in initiating the process of decline was a series of plagues that swept over the empire … which brought diseases [from] southern Asia to new areas like the Mediterranean, where no resistance had been established even to contagions such as the measles.” Those are just three of the main reasons on why or how Rome fell.
