Thousands of Texans wanted to keep their slaves so they fought against the inexperienced north to keep their slaves, but some Texans didn’t own slaves. So, why did Texans fight in the Civil War? Well, Texans had many reasons why they would fight. Many Texans bore arms because their love for Texas, to preserve slavery, and states rights.
Texans fought because of their passion for Texas. “...for if I ever marry it will be in Texas” (Document D). “He served with a famous cavalry unit called Terry’s Texas Rangers…” (Document D). This man fought for about four years in this service, and four years he fought for Texas. John Rabb fought for the South. The document says that most of the Rangers wanted to be in Texas at that moment, they might’ve lived in Texas and wanted to see their family.
