The Anasazi were an indigenous people group based in the American Southwest. The name “Anasazi” means “Ancient Ones”, which is accurate because they lived from about 200-1300 AD and may be the ancestors of some modern tribes in that area. *They were very well developed for the time, but then, around 1200, they started to disappear. No one knows why they left or where they went.*

(1) Archaeologists have found old houses carved intricately in the sides of cliffs, the dwelling places of the Anasazi. Many think that the Anasazi joined the Pueblo people and taught them how to build these efficient and innovative houses. (4) Some theories suggest that pests discovered their food storage and destroyed their supplies, causing them to separate and join other tribes. Others say that war with another tribe lead to the Anasazi people fleeing in fear. However, these all seem unlikely when one considers the unusual fact that the Anasazi did not leave all at once. (5) Gradually, over about a hundred years, the people simply left. Family by family, the tribe became smaller and smaller.

Evidence suggests that the Anasazi joined other tribes such as the Pueblo and Zuni. This evidence includes oral history, legends, and the fact that they adopted and adapted the Anasazi style of building. This means that the Anasazi split up and they did not all go to the same tribe when they broke apart. Perhaps there was a civil war or a schism.
