The Catholic Church had a good reason to ban Tartuffe because it seemed like it was insulting faith through the character Tartuffe. Tartuffe could be seen as insulting because it would seem like Moliere is trying to make fun of faith through Tartuffe, meaning that he would be the embodiment of a regular church attendee. Tartuffe is insulting because he is deceitful, he tried to commit adultery, and is a fake.
On numerous accounts, Tartuffe is seen as deceitful. When Tartuffe is convicted of committing adultery, he deceits Orgon by telling him that he should listen to his son, Damis, who is telling Orgon that Tartuffe tried to get with his wife. Tartuffe then agrees that he did all of those things, using reverse psychology on Orgon and tricking him. Tartuffe also deceits Orgon into thinking that he (Tartuffe) lost his land because he cared for Heaven. In Act 3, Tartuffe and Elmire are alone in a room together. Tartuffe professes his love for Elmire however Elmire is married. Tartuffe knows this but continues to make his advances. He finally stops when Elmire shuts him down and says that she will tell her husband unless Tartuffe doesn’t get married to Mariane. Later in Act 4, Elmire and Tartuffe are alone in a room again and this time Elmire tricks Tartuffe into thinking that he will be getting lucky. Tartuffe agrees but before things can escalate Orgon reveals that he was hiding under the table the entire time.
