Why Do Bananas The Giver

Submitted By

BananasThe Giver by Lois Lowry is a dystopian fiction based around the life and experiences of Jonas. The community in which he lives is certainly a horrifying place to live for many reasons. Firstly, every child, at age 12, is given a job without any choice for themselves. Furthermore, the community believes passionately in an idea which they call sameness. It is clear that this community is not a nice place.

A harsh feature of the community is that its citizens do not choose jobs, nor can they change career paths. This is cruel and makes it a bad place to live because it limits the choices which people can make. Choices are a vital part of our life experiences. In the community children are allocated jobs at the “ceremony of twelve”. This

Thesis- the Gift of the Magi

...no bounds, though Della (the wife) worries about how her sacrifice will affect her husband because of how it affects her looks. If ever there were a story with the message that all you need to be happy is love, this is it. Sacrifice The two main characters in "Gift of the Magi" are a husband and wife who give up their most precious possessions to be able to afford gifts for each other on Christmas Eve. The story seems to be all about sacrifice. We watch Della go through the process of deciding to make the sacrifice and going through with it, only to discover that her husband has made the same sacrifice. The story's narrator assures us that in their willingness to give up all they have, they have proven themselves the wisest of all gift-givers. It might remain unclear, though, exactly what their sacrifice has accomplished, or how it has affected them. Wealth In many ways, "Gift of the Magi" is a story about what it means for something to be valuable. Does something's value lie in how much money it is worth? Or are other things more valuable than money? The main characters are very poor – this is repeatedly emphasized – and yet the story suggests that their love for each other makes them very rich. It is that love, which motivates them to give up the only things of monetary (or personal) value they have to buy presents for each other. Perhaps their poverty is what enables them to appreciate what really matters. Women and Femininity The main character of...

Chocolate

...CONSUMER MARKETS – JUNE 2014 A taste of the future The trends that could transform the chocolate industry kpmg.com T he outlook for the world’s chocolate industry is brighter than it has been for eight years. Euromonitor predicts the industry will enjoy a 6% rise in revenues in 2014, delivering record global revenues of US$117bn. This robust performance is driven by a 2.1% increase in volume, reflecting growing appetite for chocolate in emerging markets. The challenge for the industry’s major players is how to make best use of this boom to profitably grow their volumes faster than the markets, achieve sustainable improvements in core operating margins and make the right investments – be they in capacity, acquisitions, the supply chain, marketing or R&D – to seize the significant opportunities ahead. The single biggest factor improving the industry’s performance is the fact that, at long last, the global economy is showing signs of sustained recovery. Growth in many major markets is accelerating. The stellar performers are India (expected to grow by 22% this year), Brazil (13%) and China (11%). The potential long-term growth in emerging economies – many of which have growing middle classes – is vast. To give just one example: the per capita consumption of chocolate in China is only a tenth of that in Switzerland. Yet, as this global tour of the chocolate industry suggests, the future is not without challenges. The immediate concern is the balance between supply of cocoa...

National Geographic research indicates that although two thirds of the earth’s surface is covered with water, only 5% of this two thirds is safe for domestic consumption.” (www.aquatreatment.com/deep.html). This research paper examines the market for an in-home water purification system in the Philippines. Our product is the Aquasmart Double Filter Under Sink Water Purification System, which is designed for home or office use, to provide clean drinking water at a lower cost than bottled water. Our initial target market will be the growing urban middle class of Filipinos. A majority of the Filipino population live in rural regions, and are involved in the agricultural economy. However, urban centers are growing quickly as the Philippines gradually shift from an agriculturally-based economy to an urban-based modern industrial economy. Urban residence currently accounts for 45% of the Philippine population, but as migration patterns continue...

River Nile

...Introduction The Nile River is the longest river in the world, stretching approximately 6,700 km from its remote headwaters in eastern Africa to the Mediterranean Sea. The Nile and its tributaries flow through Eleven countries and the river basin drains over three million square kilometers (one tenth of Africa’s total land mass) and is home to more than 300 million people (many of them are among the world’s poorest). Because of its size and variety of climates and topographies, the Nile is one of the most complex river basins in the world. The Nile originates from its major source, Lake Victoria forming the White Nile that flows generally North through Uganda and into Sudan where it meets the Blue Nile at Khartoum, from the confluence of the White and Blue Nile, the Main Nile River flows northwards into Egypt and to the Mediterranean Sea. The Eastern Nile includes the countries of Ethiopia, Sudan, and Egypt, and encompasses the sub-basins of the Baro-Akobo-Sobat, the Blue Nile, the Tekezze-Settit-Atbara, portions of the White Nile in Sudan, and the Main Nile. All flows in the Nile are the result of rainfall upon the Ethiopian highlands and the Equatorial lakes region. While this rainfall is usually plentiful, it is not always consistent from year to year. The annual average rainfall over the entire Nile basin is approximately 600 mm, ranging from 1200-1600 mm at the headwater regions to near zero at the most northern part of the basin. The seasonal fluctuations of rainfall...

Rhetoricalwriting

...A Preface of Quotations Whoever desires for his writings or himself, what none can reasonably condemn, the favor of mankind, must add grace to strength, and make his thoughts agreeable as well as useful. Many complain of neglect who never tried to attract regard. It cannot be expected that the patrons of science or virtue should be solicitous to discover excellencies which they who possess them shade and disguise. Few have abilities so much needed by the rest of the world as to be caressed on their own terms; and he that will not condescend to recommend himself by external embellishments must submit to the fate of just sentiments meanly expressed, and be ridiculed and forgotten before he is understood. --Samuel Johnson Men must be taught as if you taught them not; And things unknown propos'd as things forgot. --Alexander Pope Style in painting is the same as in writing, a power over materials, whether words or colors, by which conceptions or sentiments are conveyed. --Sir Joshua Reynolds Whereas, if after some preparatory grounds of speech by their certain forms got into memory, they were led to the praxis thereof in some chosen short book lessoned thoroughly to them, they might then forthwith proceed to learn the substance of good things, and arts in due order, which would bring the whole language quickly into their power. --John Milton Introduction Good writing depends upon more than making a collection of statements worthy of belief, because writing is intended to...

...and importance. Before the advent of Christianity in the Igorotlandia, the Igorots or the people of the Cordilleran region in the Philippines were animist or pagans. Our reverence or the importance of giving honor to our ancestors is a part of our daily activities. We consider our ancestors still to be with us, only that they exist in another world or dimension. Whenever we have some special feasts (e.g., occasions during death, wedding, family gathering, etc.), when we undertake something special (like going somewhere to look for a job or during thanksgiving), we perform some special offer. We call this "Menpalti/ Menkanyaw", an act of butchering and offering animals. During these times we call them in our prayers to join us in spirit. We do this also to ask for help and/or ask for guidance, etc. The prayers are usually performed by an elderly person of the town (called "pangamaen" for a man and "Panginaen" for a woman; however an elderly man has preference to be "the prayer renderer" when we have the choice). By the way and to reiterate, our practices of revering are not a form of...
