Why Do College Prices Make College Free?

Over many centuries, college prices have changed drastically. Growing up now it is very expensive to be going away to a four-year university either private or public. This is an issue nowadays because many young adults need a college degree in order to get a job. Which would be alright, if college was not around $30,000 a year, and students are drowning in debt. Not every student’s parents could afford a mortgage, car payments, and college tuition at the same time. This takes a toll on the college kid because then they might not be able to get the education they want, or they will have to work and go to school at the same time. There are many scholarships that could help, but most likely one or two scholarships do not make college free. Back

Paradox Of College

...Everyone always sees a problem and complains about how there is a problem in the educational system. But, no one ever comes up with a plan on how it should be changed, instead they just complain about how no one changes it. The fact of the matter is that everyone loves free things, especially the idea of free college. However, would that really end up benefiting a student’s education overall? College should be free to those who work for it by maintaining an adequate GPA, therefore we know the student is focused only on education and not about how they’re paying for education, which also allows students to engage in more extracurricular activities such as internships and possibly studying abroad. Why should our country be worried about providing...

...The limitation of free speech on college campuses Many people believe in freedom of speech. Freedom of speech usually exist in democratic countries including the United States of America. Furthermore, The U.S, also known as “Free country” have legalized the freedom of speech in every institution such as school, college, or church. There are many people including myself who are against freedom of speech in specific sectors such as school and college. On the other hand, the University of Missouri believe in the power of free speech even though in some cases it can be offensive. Why should free speech be limited on campuses? When should free speech be limited on campuses? Who should take responsibility of free speech on campuses? Erika Christakis, the the Yale Associate House Matter states, “Free speech and the ability to tolerate offense are the hallmarks of a free and open society” (“Campus adults: protect free speech” 1) and the authorities of the university of Missouri adopted that slogan. I believe that free speech should be limited in the university of Missouri in order to reduce the effects of creating an offensive, demeaning, intimidating, and hostile environment for other students on campus. First, I am against the total freedom of speech in the university of Missouri because it can create an offensive environment on campus. The offense can be directed against other students because of their race, color, religion, sex orientation, age, or disability. The recent events...

College Cost Benefit Analysis

...room, and board fee increase in public 4-year colleges in the United States (Tuition and Fees and Room and Board over Time). According to The Department of Education, about 40% of college students in the middle class achieved their bachelor's degree within 8 years. That is about 60% that dropped out because of financial issues, low grades, or illegal behavior. The cost of college education is rising, which is why it should be free. Students often cannot attend college because not everyone can qualify for federal help, the tuition and housing cost rising each year, many students having to pay their phone bills and be able to pay for other...

Economics

... You own a local sub shop in a college town. You primarily serve two groups of people: (Students and other local residents) and visitors to your town. Devise a price discrimination strategy that will increase your revenues compared to a single- price strategy. Marketing to these groups would not be hard, you need good ideas and price to catch both parties. First, I would market the weekends to the college students. Late night menus seem to catch the eye of the students, because they are either out or studying. For the other groups like the families, Monday thru Wednesday would be good day to market and sell to them. Families are either running around getting the kids from place to place for sporting events or other activities and do not have time to have a sit down diner at home. Offering discounts on the weekdays make it easier for them to grab something for the family to eat on the go. College students usually do not have much cash, so any discount on food is welcoming to them. Some college eateries are not open on the weekends the same as during the week the hours of operation change due to the class schedule. Getting the college to agree letting the student be able to use their meals at the sub shop would be a win win for both establishments. The college would get a percentage of the sale from the students who use this program. The family group and visitors a buy two get one free deal on Mondays. Tuesdays would be free fries with every purchase. Wednesday...

Being a senior in high school and worrying about grades and getting into college is so much stress on one person, but when you find out you got in to your dream college you realize you can not pay for it or it is very expensive. The higher someone goes in college the more likely they are to get the job they want. Over the years the cost of tuition, boarding, and fees have gone up thousands of dollars. College Education

...A College Education Today There are numerous reasons why people yearn for a college education. Most students that were surveyed all seem to have similar answers. I think that would be most logical considering they are already people who have enrolled and believe in a higher education. Many of my findings in both Rereading America and other articles from present day, seem to explain a different side of perspective that is not always talked about amongst students. Perhaps, it is an underlying factor that wishes to be ignored to remind ourselves that we are all on the right path. Horace Mann was a firm believer in the concept of an education. Many students I surveyed seem to agree with his arguments, but not exactly in such a way that Mann explained. For example, he claimed everyone should have access to education because “in a social and political sense, it [would be] a free school system. It [would know] no distinction of rich and poor, of bond and free” (Mann). This may have been the case in 1848, however; in current times, the schools systems do know these distinctions when it comes to the people of society. Unfortunately, many people do not always get what they want out of the college experience, and now “the Reagan administration official recently spoke with U.S. News about what prospective students should be thinking about, what they get for their buck and why a bachelor's degree is no longer synonymous with success” (Berger). College education may not be for...

Community College Tuition-Free Study

...Obama proposes making community college tuition-free for responsible students, in order to let more students receive the bachelor’s degree and earn skills that meet employer needs. The proposal is a good starting point because more students can have the opportunities to get higher education, especially for students who are from low income families. On contrast, the government has not enough funds to pay off the tuition fees and free tuition might bring some negative impacts to student, such as a decline in the quality of teaching, and student will care less about their study, so I consider it is...

College or Costllege?

...Rodrigo Albornoz Prof. Gordon. WSC 001 11/17/2014 College Or Costllege? What do you think should raise more, inflation or college tuition? History has shown that the cost to study in US colleges raises faster than the US inflation (Lorin). Why is this happening? Or even worse, why would the system support such incongruence? This could be because the high education level offered requires such high prices, or maybe, it is a way to improve the economy by teaching society that there is no better investment than education. Anyway, let’s try to discover the answer by delving in these two different aspects that, in fact, are the main reasons of education on society: To support the learning and improve the economy. Thinking and researching about our first point we find that it is fact that European academies have an excellent academic system, and we also find that Germany is offering free education to Americans and other international students without requiring “scholarships” (“German Colleges”). Perhaps the US education is perfect, and so, even better that German education? According to Paulo Freire, that is not the answer either. In Paulo Freire’s essay, he describes an important weakness in the American academic system. Freire refers to the “Banking Concept” as a symbolism of what is really happening between some students and professors. Students are described as a bank account to deposit information. As students never think critically about what is learned, they just assimilate...

Two Sided Essay: Should College Athletes Get Paid

...Two Sided Essay: Should College Athletes be Paid or not If the great Kansas basketball coach, Bill Self, can completely change his whole prospective on the idea of college athletes being paid, we all can! Self once stated that “[college athletics has] always [been] big business; now it's huge business. And when you're sending players from the West Coast to East Coast to play sports, to miss more classes, and the schools benefit from that financially, why shouldn't the people that are responsible for the business, and that would be the student athletes," (Kansas). At most colleges, college athletes are a key source of income, and they attract students to their institutions. Universities depend on their athletes to produce and maintain the popularity of their school's name. College athletes are supposed to be the best of the best on that level, so why do college athletes not get paid? The National Collegiate Athletic Association, NCAA, says that it is trying to protect the athletes from "exploitation by professional and commercial enterprises" (United). Many argue that student athletes should not be paid because they are receiving an essentially free education through a scholarship. These people feel that the promise of their education being paid for is enough for the college athletes. They reason that with free tuition, room, board, books, and fees, there are no other factorable costs that could significantly harm ones packets. However, on the opposite side of the issue, some...

Should College Tuition Be Free for All Students?

...Should College Tuition be Free for all Students? I believe that most students today struggle to pay for college. Unless you are a 4.0 grade point average student with a complete scholarship to the university of your liking, you are subject to the same condition as the majority of college students that struggle to pay the tuition for a four year school or attend community college to transfer after two years. Despite the fact that I attend community college and call myself “financially stable” for the moment, but even with my mother’s income and with what I make myself, I am still not able to completely finance my way through college. I consider myself to be blessed as that does not even compare to what a student at a four year university has to pay for tuition; paying for tuition becomes even more burdensome if you are attending an out of state school or private university. Although financial aid tries to help students with their tuition with no expectation of being paid back, that money is generally insufficient in covering the majority of the debt. As a result, a “financially stable,” or lower status would still mean that you undertake debt that cannot be paid back in full for years to come. With that fact in mind, should college tuition be free for all students? In order to fully answer this question, I began exploring different articles that offered different opinions as to what should be done to resolve this issue. “Free College, We can afford it” by Katrina vanden...

Why Is College so Expensive?

...Why is college so expensive? Presentation Rationale Purpose: The purpose of this speech is to inform my audience of why college is so expensive and the information I discovered of how college tuition has gotten out of control over the last decade. Intended Audience: My audience for this speech are students and parents who want to know what is causing tuition to rise and want to know what they can do about it. Significance: This topic is very significant to my audience because the cost of higher education is increasing every year and for many becoming unattainable due to the cost. This is relevant because if the government and the Department of Higher Education can find ways to lower the cost. Then people can further their education which can help other areas such as unemployment. Presentation Plan 1. Introduction a. Attention-getting opening: Imagine back in 1984, the year I was born; the cost to go a 4 year college was only roughly $2,567 a year according to the National Center for Education Statistics (2007). Now jump to present day the average to go to a 4 year college is approximately $112,000 in 4 years (Forbes, 2015). That is over a 109% increase. Where is the money going? To put this in perspective during the same time period medical care increased by 117%, a new home 90% and the median for families incomes only increased by an average of 70%. b. Thesis Statement: Research shows that higher education is one of the most costly investments that Americans...

Student Loan Debt

... there were only so many people who went to college to receive a higher education. The first generation did not have the opportunity to go to college instead they invested their time and money on hoping their children would go on to further their education. I do not believe the first generations realized what the cost of college tuition and fees would be for their children in the future. What is out of hand these days is the cost of a college education. While investing in higher education, we gain knowledge, and future success which is good, but what is the cost? What is affecting, the future of college graduates is the high debt in loans the students must pay off which has a long-term financial effect. We must find a solution for students graduating with these large loans. There is an article “The Debt-free College Degree by Melba Newsome” (Newsome, paragraph 6) in the article for their financial packages they focus on trying to remove loans to their students at Davidson College. Institutions are considering this as a model for other colleges looking for the idea to try to provide solutions to the student loan problem. Giving students their college tuition for free is this a feasible solution? What a college could apply to a student’s financial package could be the large endowment funds that are given to various colleges and universities each year. Expert “Mark Kantrowitz stated Harvard could afford to make tuition free.” (Kantrowitz, paragraph 3) The fact is that...
