By the late 1820s the North had begun to become more industrialized while the south remained more agricultural because of geographic and climate differences. On May 19, 1828 the congress passed a tariff that laid impost on foreign imports. This tariff mostly benefited the northern states and the South was not very pleased with this, because the South felt that the “Tariff of Abominations” was only protecting the North and causing the South more conflict than it needed. John C. Calhoun created a doctrine called the Nullification Doctrine which basically stated that if congress or the federal government proposed a law that an individual state disagreed with they could nullify or void out the law within the boundaries of its individual state. …show more content…
After the nullies argued their case they sparked up President Andrew Jackson and he had a few words to say. President Jackson’s response to this Nullification was very important for the sake of the nation. Jackson responded by saying that South Carolina’s Ordinance of Nullification was ill-considered and unconstitutional. He further stated that the Nullification was "incompatible with the existence of the Union, contradicted expressly by the letter of the Constitution, unauthorized by its spirit, inconsistent with every principle on which it was founded, and destructive of the great object for which it was formed." Jackson said that this ordinance was misguided because the Constitution indeed gives the congress power to raise revenue by taxation. Jackson then said that the constitution says states are banded together as a single nation. "In becoming parts of a nation...they surrender many of their essential parts of sovereignty." Last but not least Jackson gave a fierce and final warning to those in agreement with the South Carolina Ordinance of Nullification that what they were doing was treason.
