Save Vocational Education in High Schools

...Education Vocational programs at the high school level are an excellent way to provide fresh young minds with skills that cannot be achieved through academic courses alone. It is a solid foundation for young adults entering the work force in today’s economy. “A technical education is crucial in this day and age, equally so to some students as academic offerings are to others”(Tech Ed n. pag)., allowing them to pursue a career after high school whether they decide to further their education or not as stated by one news journalist; “…not every student wants to, or even should go to college. A sound technical track on the high school level can give students the skills to make a good living while providing an attractive pool of workers to draw new business.” (Tech Ed n. pag). Vocational programs must remain in place in America’s high schools and not be closed due to budget cuts or lack of interest as they are necessary to provide students with occupational and life skills. Vocational learning has often been depicted as a way of avoiding the monotony of traditional academics. This is not the case; by incorporating the programs directly with the high school, technical classes are taken in conjunction with core academics. Courses such as technical education, business and accounting, and many other classes are great ways for students to begin learning what it will be like to work in a professional environment when they leave high school. This would follow me in the form of watercolor paintings into Baker University where I would start my college education. Though, another more uncommon art from emerged in the form of expression in my high school years. I spent all four years of high school and two years of college engaged in policy debate. ...the Texas Tribune, put his chin in his hand and asked Gov. Rick Perry: "Governor, why does Texas continue with abstinence education programs when they don't seem to be working? In fact, we have the third-highest teen pregnancy rate in the country, among all the states." "Abstinence works," Perry replied, his arms folded and resting on the table be-tween them. Smith tried again – the point of the question, he said, was that abstinence education, by the stats, doesn't exactly seem to be working. It does work, Perry replied; it's the "best form ... to teach our children," he said. "Can you give me a statistic suggesting it works?" Smith asked. I Heart Pants abstinence website "I'm sorry, I'm just going to tell you ... from my own personal life, abstinence works," said Perry, increasingly agitated. "If the point is ... we're going to stand up here and say, 'Y'all go have sex and have the whatever is going on ... and here's the ways to have safe sex' – I'm sorry; call me old-fashioned if you want, but that's not what I'm going to stand up in front of the people in the state of Texas and say, 'That's the way we need to go, and forget about abstinence.'" Of course, neither Smith nor anyone else was asking the governor to "forget about abstinence," but the truth, say advocates for adolescent health, including doctors and educators, is that teaching "abstinence only" has not worked to reduce the high rates of teen pregnancy and births in Texas despite the tens of millions in funding...

He has written many novels for young adults including the sequel to The Chocolate War (Beyond the Chocolate War, 1985). Cormier wrote The Chocolate War based on a true life experience “in which his son was the only person in his class to refuse to sell chocolates for a high school fund raiser” (Young, 9). The Chocolate War was published by Pantheon in New York, New York in 1974. The Chocolate War tells the story of “a young boy's struggle against the conformity imposed on him by the restrictive atmosphere of an all-male Catholic prep school as well as by the demands of the Vigils, a secret group that the school does not officially condone but whose existence and infractions it ignores” (The Chocolate, 15). Dental Hygienist Career

...Usually to become a dental hygienist it takes an associate's degree or certificate, but a bachelor’s degree can improve your chances of finding work. “After graduating from an accredited program, you must be licensed by your state. This generally involves passing both a clinical exam and a written exam” (Welcome). Johnson County Community College offers a program for future dental hygienists. The program consists of eighty-credit-hours and is fully accredited by the American Dental Association’s Commission on Dental Accreditation. “JCCC’s state-of-the-art clinical facility is under the supervision of licensed dental hygienists and dentists” (Dental Hygiene). Another school that offers a fully accredited program for hygienists is Wichita State University. Although a little more expensive, the school offers a bachelor’s degree in dental hygiene and a hands-on learning experience. “The major focus of dental hygiene care emphasizes assessment of patients' needs; development of a comprehensive treatment plan based on individual or group needs and ultimately delivery and evaluation of this plan” (Webmaster). With this education pathway one should be ready to gain experience from their...

...Evan Mandery Professor, John Jay College of Criminal Justice • Why I'm Skipping My Harvard Reunion (A Call to Action) Posted: 05/06/2014 8:51 am EDT Updated: 07/06/2014 5:12 am EDT In a few weeks, the Harvard class of 1989 will be reuniting in Cambridge. There'll be mini-TED talks, a "Taste of New England Dinner," and a chance to sing with the Boston Pops, but I'll be spending the weekend coaching my son's Little League team and hanging out with my family. Reunions seem unnatural to me. I refuse to participate in the charade of pretending to be surprised to see a classmate, and when I'm asked, "What have you been doing?" as one inevitably is, I never know where to draw the line between "stuff" and the full, self-reflective version one might share with a close friend. I think too much detail implies an exaggerated sense of self-worth and is hence a greater faux pas than too little detail, so I've always hewed closer to the "stuff" version, but this runs its own risk of suggesting you don't think the other person is important enough to merit the full telling of your own story. It's a minefield and, in the social media era, one that's entirely avoidable. I've never been unable to locate an old friend or classmate online. It's particularly easy for graduates of Harvard, which maintains a great alumni website--it's where Facebook started, after all. Anyone interested in me can find my professional record on LinkedIn, family photos on Facebook, and many hilarious tweets. If one wanted...

It would also allow students to examine processes they use for career selection. The literature review has provided recommended models in career choices. The review of the literature showed that three areas of a studentfs life affect the career choices they make: environment, opportunity, and personality. All three played varying roles in career outcomes. This study attempted to identify to what extent these factors played a role in career choice...

...comprehensive sexual education. I work for the American Civil Liberties Union, and within this I am a part of TACL. The point of this group is to focus on civil liberties for students. With the passage of the abstinence only bill in Tennessee, I feel as though my liberties have been taken. I believe that you cannot stop students from doing what is natural by not teaching them about it or teaching them about protection. Studies show that in states with abstinence only education laws, the pregnancy rate is much higher. I want to focus my research on education about safety and reproduction. If no one teaches a student about how to protect him or herself from STIs or pregnancy, the chances of them avoiding this are much smaller. I can see why lawmakers think that if you don’t teach a student about options other than abstinence it will cut down their sexual activity, but with television and media, all students are aware of these activities....

...The Oxford 3000™ The keywords of the Oxford 3000 have been carefully selected by a group of language experts and experienced teachers as the words which should receive priority in vocabulary study because of their importance and usefulness. The selection is based on three criteria. The words which occur most frequently in English are included, based on the information in the British National Corpus and the Oxford Corpus Collection. (A corpus is an electronically held collection of written or spoken texts, often consisting of hundreds of millions of words.) However, being frequent in the corpus alone is not enough for a word to qualify as a keyword: it may be that the word is used very frequently, but only in a narrowly defined area, such as newspapers or scientific articles. In order to avoid including these restricted words, we include as keywords only those words which are frequent across a range of different types of text. In other words, keywords are both frequent and used in a variety of contexts. In addition, the list includes some very important words which happen not to be used frequently, even though they are very familiar to most users of English. These include, for example, words for parts of the body, words used in travel, and words which are useful for explaining what you mean when you do not know the exact word for something. These words were identified by consulting a panel of over seventy experts in the fields of teaching and language study. The words of the Oxford...
