I feel college is for people that want to succeed in life. You can be in any wage bracket, depending on what you’re majoring in. For example, you can go to school to be a doctor or a registered nurse. We all know doctors make more than a RN, so a doctor is in a higher wage bracket than a RN. As a student, you have the choice to be whatever you want to be. You might be in a major you like and end up changing majors because you found a major you like better. The first school I enrolled in was Central Carolina Tech in 1995. My major was Machine Tool Technology. My job paid 80% of my tuition, as long as it dealt with the job. I applied for a job in the Tool Room, but they didn’t want to hire me. I looked at getting employment elsewhere, but needed at least 2 years experience. So, after receiving my Associates Degree in Machine Tool Technology, I enrolled a second time in an Industrial Maintenance program. After getting my Associates Degree in Industrial Maintenance, I applied for a Maintenance helper position which I received soon after. I held the position for a year and tried to get a regular Maintenance position, but they did not want to hire me. I then signed up for a Die Bench Tech position, which I held for a year. A large sum of students that have attended Charter schools have gone on to college receiving a 3.0 or higher. Charter schools are publicly funded institutions that operate under their own standards of conduct and curriculum. Although these institutions are funded by tax dollars, charter schools are ultimately given the freedom to establish their own methods of operation, similar to how private schools are able to operate their instructional and social practices. Various studies and statistics reveals that students who come from lower-income families or students that are English language learners revealed higher success and performance rates in charter schools than in public school. According to the DC fiscal policy institute, the median proficiency level at the 43 charter schools studied rose from 44.2 to 50.2 percent from 2008 to 2012, while it fell from 40.4 to 36.7 percent at the 109 public schools. An experimental study was devised for the purpose. A guidance programme for secondary school students was developed by the researcher. The majority of new students entering higher education leave their initial college of choice without completing a degree (Tinto, 1993), and national attrition rates have been increasing since the early 1980s at two-year and four-year institutions, both public and private (Postsecondary Education Opportunity, 2002). At all types of higher education institutions, including highly selective colleges and universities, the most critical period or stage of vulnerability for student attrition continues to be the first year of college (“Learning Slope,” 1991). More than half of all students who withdraw from college do so during their first year (Consortium for Student Retention Data Exchange, 1999), resulting in a first-year attrition rate of more than 25% at four-year institutions, and approximately 50% at two-year institutions (ACT, 2003).
